RAM problem

Recommended Posts

Hey.

I have 2 4gb RAM sticks (my computer can only hold 2) but its only reading 4gb of memory.

I have checked that they are fully connected, and that both slots and cards are working 100%.

Checking the BIOS has shown no results.

Also, when I run windows XP on the same PC (2 hard drives), it shows 8gb. So I guess its a win7 issue.

Any tips you might have are greatly appreciated. Thankyou

RAM Problem, computer reads 3gb but not 4gb?

I've never seen a problem like this one and I have no idea what to do at this point.

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention I do have 64 bit Windows 7 and that does explain why XP was only reading and using 3. But what could be the problem now with 64 bit windows 7? Original Question is listed below again.

I have 4 slots on my motherboard for ram, i orignially had 2gb of Corsair XMS2 800mhz ram and wanted to upgrade to 4gb. I bought the exact same brand and same name, Corsair XMS2 800mhz however instead of it saying 5-5-5-12 in the upper right corner, it says 4-4-4-12 and the version number are different. I believe the old one is 5.1 and these two new ones are version 6.3.

Ok so I orignially have Windows XP running and install the two new gigs. Everything works fine and I go to system and check properties and it says 3gb installed. So I go to BIOS and it says 4gb of internal memory, so I ignored it. I was in the middle of getting read to upgrade to Windows 7 so I hoped it would fix itself. So I have the 4gb format my drives and install Windows 7. The installation goes very slowly and I was told to remove the new RAM and it worked fine. I decide to test one stick at a time. I put one in and it works fine. 3gb are read and it runs nicely. I take the new one out and try the other one. Runs fine. So maybe it was that individual slot, so i rotated the 3gb and nope it still worked fine. So in summary (thanks for reading my long *** story! ) my 4gb of ram will not work together. I even bought a whole new pack of RAM and tried the same thing. What could the problem be? Is something maxed out on my system to only accept 3gb? It so odd.

Is your Windows 7 64 bit? if not you won't see all the memory.

+1 you need a 64 bit OS to utilize more than 4GB of RAM
