haven't been able to run game (FO3) for a year

so for a year or so now, when i have the sinew to try and get the game to work, i have failed all times, it used to work, i recently (read:the day before this post) installed the game through the GOTY cd.

i ran it to the tile screen once, and then (perhaps foolishly) installed all the mods i wanted to use using the latest version of FOMM and also put in the latest version of FOSE

this picture is my current FOMM setup

http://i59.servimg.com/u/f59/14/67/55/20/captur10.png

if it is just a mod order screw up (this time) or a bad mod i would be happy but i doubt that thats the case because several time now i've disabled everything but the dlc and fose as that sont used fomm and it crashes in similar spots

those spots would be (all in the vault)

furthermore i am running the latest version of the unofficial patch (1.3 i believe)

after the overseer speaks to me at my birthday (not if i opened up the pipboy/ inventory before the guy who like my pipboy, i forgot his name, talks i could continue to play until the last thing on this list)

after Amata speaks to me in the same place (Latest crash)

in the place where i get the bb gun around the time the radroach spawns (situation i had before the aforementioned reinstal probably not important as my entire setup was different then)

and finally when entering the atrium during the escape

more things that i have done to try and fix this other than what you can tell from the picture provided are the edits in the fallout.ini

such as:

bUseThreadedAI + iNumHWThreads edits

and some others that i cant remember what they are called specifically

and all the things that the unofficial patch installer did

(also if you didn't know according the the readme vashdegal needs "bInvalidateOldFiles" to be 1)

i also ran the fallout exe through the 4gb patch

i installed the latest official patch (before most of the things i've already listed) despite that fact that the game said i was already at the version the patch installed

here is system information:

http://i59.servimg.com/u/f59/14/67/55/20/captur11.png

i should also add that the game is installed on an external drive outside of windows oppressive rule of program files, highly doubt this is the issue

I am at the end of my line, which is why I posted here, because honestly i don't think i will get much help its just past experience, so no offense.

Your load order must be: Fallout3.esm

Anchorage.esm

ThePitt.esm

BrokenSteel.esm

PointLookout.esm

Zeta.esm

Unofficial Fallout3 Patch.esm - I never saw the need to use this.

Start the game and run through the opening until just before you leave the vault and make a save. Go through the door to the wasteland and make a save. At this point you can add the rest of your mods, one at a time.

After each mod install, start the game and run around to make sure the mod will work. Do this for each mod you install.

See: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/652876-fallout-3-modding-and-you/

Hope this helps.

unable to continue past the birday party, crashes after amata speaks with me

noticed that the game made an autosave despite me seting all the autosave options to off

Disable all your mods and the DLCs. If you can get through the beginning, just before you leave the vault, make a save. Go through the door to the wasteland and make a save. Now enable the DLCs and your mods.

more bad news i'm afraid, between the time you and i last posted i reinstalled the game and ran it vanila with the DLC and got to the point where i went through the door to the atrium (the part where the guards first have guns).

it crashed when i 'used' the door

then i came here reda you think that you just posted and tried a new game without any dlc, the game froze as i was being rolled away from my dying mother (ak the first 3 minute)

i guess something is really fudged

but because i used vanilla (haven't even give FOMM the new file path yet) can we conclude that (one or several)

A the game has an issue with my hardware

B the game has an issue with my software

C the installation disk has been afflicted in such a way that a stable installation is not possible

D the game dont like that location it has been placed in on my hard drive(s)

E an error registry is prevent the game from working as intended

F bethesda should have bug checked the game a lot more than they did

I think it is most likely "A", you must do the changes to the .ini after you have started the game and generated the Fallout.ini in Documents/MyGames/Fallout3. Do not change the Fallout_Prefs.ini or the Fallout.ini in the Fallout Directory (the one with the Fallout.exe)

You should also check this posting to eliminate "B" http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1465357-installing-fallout-3-with-windows-78-and-xp/ These are not pick and choose fixes.

All of them must be done in order to obtain a stable game.

Also, when you uninstalled the game, did you use the "search" function and hunt up any remaining fragments of the game? Did you do a system reboot after the uninstall and before you did the re-install?

I eliminated "C" because it did install,"E" and "F" because the game did start. I think the only time "D" would come into the equation, would be if you installed the game in "Program FIles".

no

working on edits going to test.

would you assume that the main reason i'm having problems is because i'm running a 4 core computer with windows 7?

i hope i don't have the same problems with new vegas which i recently purchased through steam, which i also haven't been able to play yest because i'm trying to fix FO3

The game was developed before quad core CPUs, so yes, there is a problem with a CPU with more than 2 cores. Your CPU must be cut back to two cores by doing the .ini edit. New Vegas is a different game developed during a different time frame. You do not have to limit the CPU with New Vegas.

As to the autosave, it has been so long since I went through the tutorial, that I don't remember. I don't think so. You can check to see after the main menu loads. Choose "Load" and the screen will change to a list of all the saved games..

Highlight the top save and it will display where and when the save was made.

yeah is saved at pretty much the second i crashed

also question, based on all the stuff i have been reading it would seem to me that the game becomes a lot more stable after you leave the vault

am i correct in that?
