BaronObvious
I'm considering attempting to make my first Oblivion mod, and what I want to do is simply add a sword and shield to the game. I have the models and textures, but currently they're in the MDL and VTX formats used by Source-engine games. So what I would like to know is what software I'll need to convert these files to the formats used in Oblivion, and how I may go about making the conversion. Any help would be appreciated! mcole254
The models must be .nif files and textures must be .dds, blender is a free 3d program with an available script plugin to export in .nif. Photoshop and gimp have nvidia plugins available for making normal maps and exporting .dds formats. Your texture must also have a normal map as well. BaronObvious
Okay, I just installed Blender and NifSkope, but I don't think I have the plugin for nif files in Blender. Also, Blender seems unable to read the files for the sword and shield, so I believe I need a plugin for importing Source's file formats as well. So now I gotta go find them. Illiad86
Are you ripping these meshes and textures right out of another game?
BaronObvious
weeell to tell the truth, yes. It's the models for the Master Sword and Hylian Shield, as seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (based on their styles in Zelda: Twilight Princess), ported as props for Garry's Mod (whew). Yeah, I know that's bad. And yeah, I know there are already Oblivion mods for those items available for download... But if it means anything, I don't plan on releasing the mod (they'd just be for personal/educational use), and none of the existing Zelda-related mods use the Twilight Princess style for the sword and shield. bben46
Thank you for clearing that up. :thumbsup:I had already flagged this topic for follow up and to see if you uploaded a ripped mesh. Bben46, Moderator
BaronObvious
of course I wouldn't upload it, I know it's illegal to do so. Hell, Bethesda doesn't even like people porting resources from its own games into Oblivion (even if Morroblivion is a kickass idea). Would I still be able to receive help here for the format conversion, will I have to search elsewhere? Simply knowing how could be useful in the future, but knowing how to make Oblivion mods is the main goal.
