INI tweaks to reduce crashing?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

My game's very stable after installing ~120 mods. I've been using LOOT and FNVedit plenty, paying attention to what Gopher's vids have been suggesting, and I remember when I was modding Skyrim that there were some INI lines that could be added/changed to reduce crashing when loading into new areas with lots of "things."

I bring this up because I do crash probably once an hour, and of the few crashes that have happened, every time it's from entering or exiting a building. No specific sore points, I haven't been backtracking much, and I can't replicate it on command. It'll just happen.

I remember seeing cell buffers and u grids, but I don't know what'll work in New Vegas and I don't remember the lines. Do you guys use any specific INI lines to reduce crashes?

Here's my load order if it'll help. Not a dramatic amount of mods imo, not compared to when I mod Skyrim, but a lot of...picky choices. WMX really doesn't enjoy cooperating with my current mod list it seems, same with New Vegas Interiors.

Go through your load list, read each entry and make the necessary corrections. You will either disable and uninstall the DLCs or disable and uninstall the patches.

Also, why do you have 2 All Companions Essential?

Memory, Loading & Multi-threading

uInterior Cell Buffer=3

uExterior Cell Buffer=36

The above values determine how many cells (for interior or exterior areas as relevant) are buffered into RAM. Altering these values may help make performance smoother. For example, for 1GB of RAM you can try doubling the values (6 and 72 respectively). For 2GB of RAM, try 16 and 102 respectively. For higher amounts of RAM, try raising them higher, however note that you should also raise the iPreloadSizeLimit value below (Fallout.ini).

iPreloadSizeLimit=26214400 - This setting appears to determine the maximum amount (in bytes) of RAM allowed for preloading game data. Raising the value may reduce stuttering. The default value equates to around 25MB (divide the value of this variable by 1024 to get KB, then by 1024 again to get MB). For those with 1GB of system RAM, try doubling the variable to 52428800. For those with 2GB, try double again at 104857600 (100MB). You can raise these values even further to experiment, however note that raising this to a large amount doesn't force all the game data to sit in RAM, and can actually cause crashes. I suggest the maximum anyone should set this to should be around 262144000 (250MB), even for 4GB of RAM or more. Also make sure to raise your Cell Buffer values accordingly (see above) (Fallout.ini).

It's for fallout 3 but it still works just as well (same engine) just change 'fallout_default.ini' in the NV install folder and not 'fallout.ini' in your documents folder.

Buffering more cells into RAM prevents the occasional crash with lower end cpu's.

An easier way to fix this is just to use the 4gb enabler but you asked for ini tweaks.

Dunno. Your first part though, was that in reference to WMX?

It was in reference with the patches you have for No DLCs, All DLCs, No GRA, GRA, etc. You need to read your load order and remove the incorrect patches.

Cool, that's what I was looking for. I believe I am using something akin to the 4gb launcher, something from the Nexus called Game Companion? Actually I ahve no clue if it's using the 4GB launcher, I just know that it has this as an option:

I'll make the INI changes and look to see if this game companion actually does the 4GB launcher thing. At some point.
