cctheesfan
Hi all,I was looking at the new MacBook Pro and I was wondering if it would play Oblivion with very high graphics. I noticed that it comes with an ATI X1600 card and its a dual core. Im not very knowledgeable when it comes to the innards of the computer and its components. I was also pricing the gaming laptops and the Mac comes at a better price. Other than running down to the apple store and having one of the salespeople install and run Oblivion how will I know that Oblivion will run at very high graphics or at least high? I would buy it if i knew for sure how Oblivion will run on it. Anybody have this mac and have played Oblivion on it?
Marxist ßastard
The 15" will run it at low to medium settings. The 17" will fare better, but don't expect a miracle. Either way, do remember that "gaming laptop" is simply a concise term for "battery-powered groin heatpack." Why not just use a desktop?
Dilvish
I found this article on the MacBook Pro. It mentions Oblivion near the end. http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2006/04/24/ma...bootcamp/1.html So many people try to play Oblivion with average hardware and are disappointed. If you want to play very demanding games like Oblivion, the Macbook will disappoint.
cctheesfan
Thanks for the advice and the website. Seems they say that the macbook isnt good for oblivion. But in my case having oblivion on the mac might be better than what im running now. I have a dell 3000 with a pci (not pci-e) card. Nvidia gf5200 and i can only play it at the very low setting. My processor and memory are Pent 4 and 1gig ram. Im just very disappointed that i cant see the wonderful graphics this game offers with the desktop i have. So i was looking to buy a laptop to play games on. If the mac can run the game at a better setting than i have now then it might be worth getting imo, because i have always been interested in macs and i love the way it handles graphics and the music software. But i want to play oblivion also. Maybe i will take the game to the mac store just to see what it will look like. If the salespeople will do it for me. And if the mac can play well with better than very low then it will be an improvement over the dell. Even medium will make me very happy! LOL and if it gets better than that then its well worth it. After reading tho, it seems it takes a lot to get windows onto the mac. I wonder if i should wait a bit for an improved version. This seems to be like a beta machine, being the first and all, and im sure much improvement can be done. Its just that im dying to to play with the realistic graphics oblivion offers. I guess good things comes to those who wait. Thanks again for the replies.
Marxist ßastard
Oh, you're that Dimension 3000 guy! Sorry for not recognizing you... I was hoping that you would've learned your lesson from the Dell --- upgradability is absolutely paramount in a computer, and neither a laptop nor a Mac (an Intel Mac, especially) can offer that. Your best option is to just assemble your own computer. It's much cheaper that way, in any case.
cactoblasta
Macs are very shiny but when it comes to gaming they're just not worth it. Especially expensive notebook macs. Don't get me wrong - macs are great for many things but games do not feature in that list. Get a 12" iBook if you want something light, durable and easy to use. I dropped mine all the way around Southeast Asia and it never complained about the mistreatment. But don't get a mac to play games. As Marxistßastard says, go for the highly upgradable homemade pc. cctheesfan
Marxist male without a father said:Oh, you're that Dimension 3000 guy! Sorry for not recognizing you... Oh thats ok, but im a GIRL. Anyway im already looking into the mac. I will see if they(mac store) will run oblivion and see what it does. Im not into gaming that much but i do like to play oblivion. So im not interested in getting a game computer to play games, just one that can play Oblivion better than what i have now. If it runs better than the dell then they have a sale. Ive been told by others that it will do OK, so i want to see exactly what OK means. Believe me, anything, even the slightest improvement over the dell will be OK in my book. I will let you know how it works out. I hope to know by sept and i will reply to this topic on my results.Thanx again for all your advice, for my sake, I hope it fairs better than what you are expecting. By the way, i was wondering if Marxist male without a father actually put it to the test. Playing Oblivion on Mac. Because his first reply was very hopeful that it will play better than my dell. So i hope that it is from experience than just an opinion. But dont get me wrong, i love opinions.

I've been looking to buy a laptop for a while now, preferably a mac. So when I saw the MacBook Pro I hoped it will play Oblivion better than my desktop. P.S. Bet that gaming laptop would come in handy on those bitter cold days. LOL But dont all laptops get hot?
Peregrine
P.S. Bet that gaming laptop would come in handy on those bitter cold days. LOL But dont all laptops get hot? The stuff you're usually using a laptop for isn't too demanding. But gaming needs high-end components (lots of heat) run at 100% maximum performance (even more heat), and then you put it into a tiny package with poor air flow. The gaming laptops I've seen all run so hot you can't even hold them. Then don't forget about the pathetic battery life and heavy weight of a decent gaming laptop. They aren't all that better for portability than a desktop once you realize you're carrying a 10lb bag and need a power outlet, table (the heat), usb mouse, etc. And of course the cost, for the price of a decent gaming laptop you could buy a desktop with the same performance AND a cheap laptop for taking notes in class/email/whatever.
