help with blender

ok, first of all, if this is in a bad forum, sorry. just lock + delete and tell me where to go.

now onto my problem.

i have blender for editing meshes, like i know many people do. i use NIFskope to texture the models, because i have (obviously) only small skill with blender, and do not know how to texture in blender. the problem i have is that if i either add or delete or add so much as 1 point/vertice/whatever, it will not work for me. all i get is the big exclamation point when trying to put it into the game. Anyone know a fix to this? im hoping like !#@% that i don't have to draw a new normal map or something.

p.s. if anyone knows a good way to edit dds textures, please tell me where to get it (as long as its free). currently what i do is use dxt bmp to view the texture, save it as a bmp, edit with mspaint ( o_O i know....),then save it as a dds texture. just seems to me like there should be a better way to do this (discounting the obivous don't use microsoft paint)

If you have Photoshop, there's a DDS plugin you can download by NVIDIA. This is it, I think. Of course, Photoshop definitely isn't free, but if you're going to be doing any decent retexturing I would think you'll need it.

Ok, I use 3dsmax, and haven't bothered trying anything with Oblivion, but here's my best guess.

Since you're talking about texture issues, I assume the problem is coming in with textures somewhere? Are you unable to import the model, period? I'd guess it might be one of two things:

1) You're making mistakes and/or having software bugs in the export stage. Pre-made models work fine because someone else converted them to .nif format, but your own conversion setup isn't working quite right.

2) You're losing your UVW mapping coordinates, and Oblivion is giving you the exclamation point of doom because it can't apply the texture maps you're telling it to. Remember that mapping coordinates require the mesh topology to remain exactly the same. You can move points around, but if you add/remove vertices you will need to re-apply all your mapping. Since you say the problem is coming in when you try to add/delete a vertex, maybe that's it? On the other hand, if Oblivion works like Morrowind did, bad textures would result in the model itself importing, but as a solid color.

Could you be more specific on the details? Can you import meshes through blender as long as you don't change them? Can you import meshes where you've moved a vertex, but not deleted it? Can you apply the absolute most basic texture mapping (it shouldn't take more than 5 seconds to look up, it's just a test so it doesn't have to look pretty) in blender and import successfully?

in case you haven't noticed, my skill is extremely low with blender. i have very little idea to what you even said

here's what i do

import--> .nif file (pick a file obviously)

add/delete anything

export--> .nif file (save it)

open it in NIFskope

put whatever texture went over the original model

save

put it in in the construction set

exclamation point.

no clue what im really doing

it looks like it can be that second one.

p.s. im looking up a blender tutorial as soon as school starts again. very bad internet at my house, t3 at school

yes

yes, pretty sure i can. i think i can import ones even where i have deleted or added something.

and i don't know how to do any texture mapping in blender. need to get a tutorial/guide for it

anyone else?

its kind of complex, kind of. u cant really put it simply.

ah, the exact words i was fearing

well as soon as i get home ill check out that uvw mapping. i hope like heck thats it. it sounds like it could very well be it.

all im trying to do really is create a crown/hat type of thing. so far what ive been doing is just importing a helmet and deleting from the top and towards the bottom, so just a ring like a crown is left.
