Gishank
@tehoneandonly; Do NOT misinform people, Steam does NOT have issues with modifications to the game. You can modify any game on Steam just as if it were a retail copy - II have yet to see a single game that goes against this statement. As Fallout: New Vegas uses steamworks even if you buy it in retail you will still need to register and activate it on Steam, meaning it would would still have the exact same data as a copy someone would have purchased on Steam so your point is irrelevant. zhangweizheng3
okay the usual story, i don't have internet at my house, im at friends place, my computer is desktop and can't be moved blah blah blah if i buy the game in store which requires steam, activate it in friends house, i still can't install and play the game in my house right???? and even if i somehow managed to get it installed, I can't just get patches for the game from friend's house and just install it right?? does steam allow manual patching??? Gishank
You won't be able to play the game on your home PC as Steam must be able to connect to the internet at least once to be able to go in to offline mode... You can manually patch games, yes.
zhangweizheng3
manual patch???? how????
Gishank
The majority of games which are not specifically made with steamworks will have retail executables that can be downloaded to patch the game from the games site, the majority allow you to specify the location for where the game is installed if they don't auto-detect it correctly. As for games which use steamworks (such as New Vegas), you would have to physically copy the "steam/steamapps/fallout new vegas" and paste it in to your install and say yes to any requests to overwrite files. Linmor
If it is anything like FO3, I run the game with FOSE and it doesnt even start the Steam service.
Monolithic0117
If it is anything like FO3, I run the game with FOSE and it doesnt even start the Steam service. Steam doesn't work that way. You can't bypass the service like GFWL, the executable needs to be run via Steam. Not sure if this will inhibit mods like FOSE.
coralfang
Why the hate on steam? IMHO steam works great. Sure, when it first launched, in 2002, it was unbelievable slow, buggy and laggy...but now it works just great. I have all the half life series and all counter-strikes there which is the main reason that I started using steam, but then I have RE5 and SF4 which not only uses steam but also Windows Live and I had no problem with playing them online, and even Aion which is an mmorpg. The only complain I have is steamcloud which uploads your savegames so you can have it in any machine on the fly but if you mess your savegame with mods its kinda a pain in the ass but theres a workaround which is quite simple. You might get angry at me now but the only reason i see to people *censored* about steam is because they are not willing to buy the game, but instead just get a copy of the game through some torrent site. And I have no idea how you are posting in this forum if you dont have any way to acess the internet.
jasonpressler
if you are in the boat of steam needing to validate and no internet hook up, just unhook your hard drive and bring it to your friends house. you can install and get the validation from steam, then go home and put your drive back in. a lot easier then moving your pc over to said house.
