Transparent Glass

So, yes. I'm wondering how to make a transparent glass item for a mod I'm making. I'm taking the hanging brazier from the Fort Ruin set, and hope to retexture it a crystal color, but I've no clue how one makes it transparent. I've seen it done with some Glass weapon mods, though, so I know it can be done.

One catch: If anyone would be so kind as to help me (for kudos, no less) they'll need to keep in mind I only have the Gimp for photoediting, and nifskope.

Also, I need all advise ohrased in Stoopid N00d Modder Talk.

"Click the bit that says "XYZ" untill you can change what it says, and then make it say "ZYX" is good. "Alternatate thte nitristrip untill it's bozing a royal fweep'", however, is not gonna help.

Open the model in NifSkope, then click on the part of the object you want to make transparent. In the list to the left, one part should be highlighted when you click on it.

Click on the expand buttons beside that until you see a NiTriStrips/NiTriShapes (That might be the very first thing, actually). Right click on the NiTriStrips/NiTriShapes, and select Node>Attach Property, then NiAlphaProperty.

If the texture you're using has transparency built in, it'll turn transparent. If not, you have two options:

1. Lower the alpha: (Doesn't work all that well, especially on weapons). Find a small image that looks like a paint palette near the button to retexture the bit. Click on that, then move the Alpha slider to the left until you think it looks good.

2. Make the texture transparent: Use GIMP to make the texture itself more transparent.

As the OP seems to realize, there is a bit more to it than just setting the NIF and DDS settings to enable transparency...the model has to be designed correctly for the transparent parts to "look" correct when touching opaque parts.

Example:
