Sometimes Dispositions make no sense.

So three things made me post this observation.

1) While wandering around for a quest, I ran into a redoran householder whose wife was kidnapped by daedric cultists. This is like saying, "My wife has been taken by ISIS for a ritual beheading" in our world.

So, ME, a total stranger (who could have been a bandit) stops what I am doing, goes to the shrine, slays all the daedra and cultists, and safely brings his wife back to him. So then...his disposition is only 52?

I realize that I am in theives guild/mages guild, imperial cult. But I am also in the temple. I know I am not house redoran. But seriously, no matter what kind of dislike I have for a group, saving my partner would bump up my dispostion more.

2) I was talking to a merchant. he was a cranky bastard, the pawnbroker in caldera. I got his disposition up to 95. Then I walked behnd the counter, because my rule of thumb is that if I spend money to bribe you, I steal that back from your shop. Well, I did not steal anything, but I did go into sneak. and I realized with the guard I needed to not bother.

I decide to finish selling crap, and his disposition is 10 and he says I should leave town. wtf?

3) I talk to a merchant. his disposition was about 60. We bond, I sell. I say goodbye. Then, having done nothing..I realize I forgot to sell an item that was heavy, and entered dialogue. His disposition dropped from 89 to 52. what?

I am using only Morrowind GOTY/area arrows with the MGSO megapack.

thoughts? agree this is odd?

Morrowind Dunmer are xenophobic and your character's an outlander. Maybe he still thinks you're outlander scum but just slightly less scummy than those who didn't help his wife.

How were you changing disposition? IIRC, bribing and intimidating only have short lasting effects. UESP

Ah. He was a real bastard about jumping low when I admired, so I used intimidate and bribes on him. That is why I wanted to steal stuff back. I spent 100 septims to make him nice.

thank you (again)

I have found some other things about disposition. Most people that read these forums may know this, but disposition can decide how hostile people are and when they fight.

at the low end, there are people in some dungeons who are allied with the mages or telvanni and if you have no reputation points, no major modifiers in your favor, they will attack.

for example there was a dungeon with telvanni in one place and mages in the other. If you had high rep with telvanni and were not a membe rof the mages guild, they might attack on sight. the reverse would be true. however, because you may join multiple groups..the numbers cruch really strangely. I am currently at maxed personality, with high reputation, but because I am high up in mage guild/imperial cult and other non dunmer guilds the camona tong and telvanni freaking hate me. most places in imperial areas people dispositions for me are insanely high. but for the telvanni/canmona I have it in the 20s.

anyway, there are a lot of factors in disposition: personality score, reputation points, faction modifiers....and if your speechcraft is low you may have to bribe people.

The canmona tong will hardly speak to me but because I have super high speechcraft I can charm them. if I was high up in imperial guilds with crap speechcraft and just tried talking to them, some would stop speaking to me or even attack.
