What's the point

What is the point of going into ruins, mines, camps etc if they aren't quest related because all the monsters and people just respawn. At first it didn't bother me much, but now I'm starting to think it's just pointless :(

Second word -- Loot

Another thing about this is that Bethesda wanted the game to seem longer than it really is. How long, in real life hours, does it really take to complete the main quest and the guild quests? Not very long. Then you have all the secondary quests, but while you're finding them you'll also find yourself spending a lot of time exploring all those forts, caves, and ruins. This extends game-play considerably.

The money aspect, I've got so much I don't know what to do with it and it's got to the point I don't pick up anything worth more than 200.

As for experience, it's just getting boring I don't even know if there is a cap to your level.

I would definitely agree that the programmers have made it waaaaaay too big. The first and only time I played it was when it was first released years ago I didn't go everywhere, this time I thought I would play it differently and stay away from the main quest to stop the gates from opening, but it's just got so boring when I go somewhere I've already been to find it's crawling with 'monsters again'.

On youtube I was watching a "documentary" of Oblivion, and Todd mentioned the following.

You go into ruins, caves, etc. Kill monsters, sell loot, get a bigger weapon, kill bigger monsters, and so on.

  • If you play your cards right money quickly becomes a non-issue in the game. Money isn't the only form of "loot", though. I'm always on the lookout for better armor or weapons, since I seldom go the route of making custom items in this game. I just think it's more fun to deal with what the game gives you.

Yes, there's a level cap. And there are mods which increase the level cap.

I actually didn't complain that Cyrodiil was too big. In fact, I've complained in multiple places on this site that I think Cyrodiil is too small! I know of a single city park in the real world into which you could drop most of Cyrodiil, and the majority of neighborhoods in mid to large cities are bigger than Cyrodiil's cities. Indeed, there are several cities in the U.S. which are much larger than all of Cyrodiil -- perhaps even of Tamriel. Our gameworld is deceptively small.

As mooncarver said, there are a lot of quest-related mods. In fact, "quests" is one of the major categories of mods. Go to the
Categories page of our downloads section and scroll down the page until you come to "Quests and Adventures" and click on that link and start browsing. Last I looked there were almost 600 mods there.

I agree I don't go for mods that 'cheat' I go for aesthetic type mods, I just wish that once you clear a cave etc you could go back in and it would be empty, I really hate it when they respawn as I've said I've got to the point where I'm thinking why did I bother.

In all fairness to the developers, they actually did you a favor by making things respawn. To my knowledge most of the bandits in the game, as well as most of the chests you find in caves, ruins, and forts are leveled. That means if you go in early in the game you get stuff that's really not going to be terribly useful to you after you've put on a few levels. So, go back and clear it out, again, later in the game and you'll get better loot.

That said, I really don't like leveled lists for the most part. Since Bethesda forced a level system upon me in this game, I'd like to have at least the illusion that leveling up actually makes my character better, but, sadly, that's not the case because most of the opponents level up, too. You've got new and shinier toys, but, relative to everyone else in the game you're still just the same as you were when you stumbled out of the sewer. Instead, they should have made some enemy groups easy and some very tough and the rest graded between. I have no problem running from an encounter I can't possibly win. So I just wait until I can go back and do the job, and then leveling up actually means something. Respawning should happen at much less frequent intervals, if at all. Perhaps some locations shouldn't respawn at all -- especially the more remote ones. And chests should not respawn unless the occupants respawn. This could all be fixed with a mod, but it would be a very time-consuming mod to make.
