oh. this is really easy

west of the Imperial City, and a little to the south, just west of the roads (you'll see several small roads on the map, so just south-west of them) there is a shrine, the shrine of Clavicus Vile (hope i spelled that right.....)

talk to the priest of the shrine, he will give you the quest

if i remember correctly, you need to be level 20, but it might be 10, can't recall

if you still can't find it, look HERE

i'm sure this is all you need :)

Here's a map showing the location of the shrine. The quest giver is the Khajiit in the robe who will be somewhere in the immediate vicinity of the shrine, and, yes, you have to be level 20 to take the quest. If he's not there (I believe his name is Ma'Raska) I don't know what to tell you because he's flagged essential until the quest has been completed.

You can, however, acquire Umbra before taking on this quest, and if you can manage to kill Umbra (the NPC) and get the sword Umbra you have one of the best swords in the game to use until/if you decide to "turn in" the quest later on. Note, however, that Umbra is pretty hard for a low-level character to kill, although there are some tricks you can use (like luring or pushing her to her death in the trap room) which you might be able to use. If you're not of a moderate level, though, and you do anything offensive she'll probably dismantle you and feed you your various pieces and parts. I don't remember exactly what her level is, but I think it's around 50.

I found that paralysis spells and poisons increases your chances of survival.

If you really want to prove how gutsy you are you can actually take Umbra on at any level. You just won't be able to complete the quest associated with it since you need to be level 20 to start it. It can be quite a challenge though, and a lot of fun, so if you're looking to try something new I say go for it. I haven't managed it yet, but then again I'm sticking to it Vanilla-style. No armor or weapon mods, and no God Mode or god spells. It's funny because through the course of the battle you'll start seeing your combat skills rising. I got unloaded on once and jumped like 5 Heavy Armor skill levels.

Well worth it though. The challenge is fun and I look forward to the day that I manage to actually come out alive.

If your acrobatics skill is good enough, there's a broken pillar in the room where you fight Umbra. Jump on it, then whip out your bow and snipe away at her. She will NEVER touch you.

If you do try Umbra at a low level, forget about getting in sword range. It will take about one hit for her to kill you. Take LOTS of arrows, it takes lots more than you would believe - especially if they are low level iron arrows.

I took her out at 2nd level once. It took a long time. I ran out of arrows and was able to finish only because as a Breton my magica regenerated and I was able to keep throwing fireballs. Shoot, fireball, rest, repeat. If you ever fall off of the narrow ledge where she can't reach you, you are dead.

Then her armor was so heavy I had to drop everything else to carry it all.

Yeah, I knew about this but I don't want to use it. It'll be much more satisfying to charge in head on and get the job done. There's no fun in it for me if I'm out of reach. May as well turn on God Mode.
