blitzen
Hello, I'm hoping that someone can help with an installation problem. I have FO3 installed and played it a while ago. When I try to install FO3-NV, it says it can't install because the game on which the expansion pack depends is not activated on Steam. I can't get Steam to recognize FO3 as a game. It's a non-Steam version. The NV installer seems to expect an activated steam version to be there. This is crazy. Does anyone have a non-Steam FO3 and was able to install NV? SupaLolCat
Hmm... NV isnt an expansion pack. Its a complete game. Therefore, you dont need FO3 to play it. I dont know what youre even talking about. And to answer your question, I have non steam F03 UNINSTALLED and it works fine. Other then massive lag, but thats a different thread <_<
Vai0
Steam is required for New Vegas look on the back of the box  "Requires internet connection and free steam account to activate" There is no such thing as physical steam version and Fallout New Vegas isnt called Fallout 3 - New Vegas. KDStudios
Yeah, Steam requirement was found out before release date, everyone should know you need steam to install New Vegas on PC. No matter what. It's an inconvinience yes, but guess you gotta deal with it.Put the disk in your drive and follow the instructions, it really is as simple as that. Fallout: New Vegas is it's own game and is completely unrelated to Fallout 3, only thing they have in common is the game engine and that New Vegas was built using basically all of Fallout 3's resources. So it is more like an independant DLC really (In my opinion) So yeah, unrelated to fallout 3 and you should be able to install fine (providing you have bought the retail version of the game)

The NV installer should ask you for a CD key, put that in and you should be good to go. It's a completely different game from FO3.
overload1977
Fallout New Vegas is a stand alone game you don't need fallout 3 to be installed but you need a steam account and a valid CD key...
bben46
I have the Fallout 3 installed and working from a DVD and NOT steam on my system. I had no problems installing and playing FO:New Vegas using steam. They are totally different games. Fallout 3 is not even required to be used at all. blitzen
The problem was with Steam itself. It was giving me an error message that didn't make sense, which led me to believe it was looking for a previous install that wasn't activated. I uninstalled the old Steam and installed the new version that is on the New Vegas disk, and it's installing the game now.
oldnooob
So to sum this up, No Steam = No New Vegas. I will miss out on almost all new games because I do not wan't the huge Steam overhead and invasive Steam malware on my computer. Boo Hoo for me.
