So someone please excuse my ignorance and explain to me - How can Beth

Hey guys I used the search function but to no avail - I was wondering how exactly it is possible that Bethesda/Obsidian "owns" the pre-order DLC and is stopping us from sharing it with one another.

Looking at my 4 DLC cards right here in front of me, nowhere on any of them does it say that the content remains property of Bethesda/Obsidian nor does it say we are not allowed to share it with one another.

More importantly, why do they not want us to share these packs with each other? I really see no point at all as to why. Sure it's nice that people who pre-ordered got a bonus but I really feel bad for all the people who miss out on the "full" game as I see it "just because"

Is there an actual law stating we can not share this content (If so please reference it) or is the Nexus just doing it out of respect for Bethesda/Obsidian's wishes?

If I was to recreate each DLC pack picture perfectly but actually do the work 100% myself, would I be allowed to upload these packs? I realize there are already replacements but they do not have the unique textures of the packs. If I make a nearly identical pack with maybe the armors/guns having a SLIGHT, TINY difference on the textures then is that allowed? What if I make the exact same textures but do it on my own(I would obviously have to prove it somehow.. maybe record me working or something and link it on the file? Eh I don't know)

I really hope I don't get my head bitten off for asking this. I just got infracted for asking over at the official forums (No surprise, look at a moderator wrong over there and you'll be decapitated before you can blink :) )

I just really dislike the idea of something that adds to the game being kept from loving fallout fans just because Bethesda wants a very small percentage of the customer base to have something exclusive.

Thanks heaps guys

The big deal is these are COPYRIGHTED materials. And as such cannot BY LAW (both US & UK) be distributed by anyone other than the copyright holder or their authorized representative. As TheNexus is not a representative of BethSoft, Zenimax or Obsidian; AND as we operate under UK and to a lesser extent US law. - We are not allowed to legally distribute DLCs. Any site that does allow this is known as a Pirate site. Uploading or downloading this kind of material is called piracy. As we are not now a pirate site and do not wish to be a pirate site we will comply with their request to not allow distribution here. And, In order to protect our reputation as a legitimate site, we will ban anyone who tries it.

If you do make a very close copy, be prepared to defend it in court, in front of a judge that has no clue what you are talking about. As far as he is concerned, it looks just like theirs - it must be the same thing - Guilty pay the man his $50,000 plus court costs and your lawyer fees. However if you make one that looks sort of like theirs, but a non geek can see the difference without doing an overlay of the meshes, then it is legal, they will leave you alone and you can post it here. Vagrant0 is already doing this. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34812

Thanks for informing me bben46, I understand now.

One thing I'm still not too sure about though is - Why? Why do they choose to keep the pre-order DLC copyrighted and out of the community's hands (as a whole)?

They aren't losing anything. The pre-order exclusives aren't designed to push copies of NV. They are designed to push copies of NV with a particular retailer.. The only parties that would be hurt by the availability of exclusives are the retailers, not Beth/Obsidian.

And policing these mods or attempting to enforce exclusivity once the game is released would not secure more pre-orders, because, by definition, it's impossible to pre-order something that is already released and on the market.

Ya with me? It all just seems like Bethesda is simply not allowing it "just because" and because somebody hasn't walked up to whoever makes the decisions about these sort of things and actually explained the situation to him properly.. I'm sure if someone did, he would simply allow the pre order DLC to be put up and shared.

Just can't see any other reason as to why they would try and keep it from people.

-snip-

Snip? What's that supposed to mean.

And guys if you read this topic and have a account - Give your view on the pre order DLC situation. I'd like to see more peoples opinions of how Bethesda is controlling it.

Guy 1: *posts in a thread*

Guy 1: *realizes it does not fit*

Guy 1: *edits post, replaces everything with "snip"*

I already have all the DLC (friends and brother gave me their codes) so I don't see how that would be considered "illegal" since they have no use for it.

So, yeah. I'd just drop it. It's always been my observation that bben gives good advice. I think it might help to look at it from the game maker's point of view. It's not that they care if you have the dlc, it's just that this is how they pay their bills. And you are correct that they don't and can't make any more money from the dlc. The thing is, they don't publish new games every day, some may take years and so these dlc prepayments probably either went towards the development of a new game (nice!) or helped keep their heads above water until this game's debut. If they didn't fight to keep this 'tradition' alive then the majority of the people would simply wait for the free stuff thereby wrecking these guys' worlds.

Anyway, it's JUST dlc, and not too important. I agree with bben again when he implies that you would better spend your time on some other mod. And most likely a better one (if you invest the time spent worrying over this). It's easier to just drop it now before I read about your court battle with some mega-corp in the paper (most probably a bad thing). Good luck and good gaming!

Idon't see why they should distribute the codes for free. The Pre-Oder DLC was intended as a reward for people who pre-ordered it, and if everyone got it, there'd be less incentive to have pre-ordered it.

I expect that eventually they will combine all of the preorder DLCs into a single Mod and sell it as an 'upgrade' with the Game of the Year Edition or some such. My copy came with the tribal pack - totally useless. Try using a throwing spear against a powderganger with a varmit rifle. It just makes him mad.

If your pack has a throwing attack animation THAT is pretty cool. Anyway, DLC content has always been restricted to DLC users. Can't submit DLC meshs and textures (even as a resource) in the same upload.

I'm still holding off on buying New Vegas, but looking on EBay, the game is there along with all of the various DLC addons. So it is possible and VERY legal to get all of the content provided. You just have to pay for it.
