Have tried over and over to get past the broken scene entering Dinky to go talk to Manny - have reinstalled twice, but Steam keeps downloading from the net, rather than installing from the DVD and puts all my old Mods back. I want a clean, vanilla install from the DVD, even if it means I lose all I have played so far and have to start all over. Do I have to open a new account in Steam to get to a clean install? Frankly, I hate Steam and would much prefer to run without it, but I don't see how.

Thanks.

Clean reinstall:

- Delete the game folder in the "Steam\SteamApps\common\" directory;

- Delete (backup) the .ini files in your Documents/My Games/FalloutNV directory;

To resolve the problem of being unable to install from the DVD (Steam wants to download), read this post:

Thank you very much, LM, that was exactly what I needed to know. Unfortunately, after doing the 4-day FOOK wait (still had the problem) suggested by MoonHoplite and then the complete uninstall and reinstall from disc, I STILL have the problem. I guess my save files must be corrupted. One thing I noticed is that, whenever I do the 'Verify integrity of game cache...' check, it ALWAYS returns that one file is corrupted and will be downloaded. Even after the new install from disc. So, I'm not sure what's going on there. For my last trick I am going to delete all saved files, purge all unused .dll files, do another clean install, and run from the beginning. Hate to lose my progress to date, especially since the success of the solution is unknown, until I get back to Dinky. But, that's life. FO3 was my favorite game, and I never had a crash while playing. Of course, I had never heard of mods, until I stumbled across this forum and have always played all my games (e.g. Dragon Age, Half-life...) completely vanilla. I only tried playing with a handful of mods with FANV (also FOOK, NVSE and fomm), but maybe something went wrong there? Might try vanilla, get to Dinky ASAP, see if I can enter, and, if successful, save and THEN try adding mods one at a time. Anyway, thanks again.

Thought I would post my results, in case it might be useful to anyone else. After uninstalling completely. scrubbing the registry, reinstalling from the DVD, using NVSE and FOOK to install my mods, and starting a new game, I was able to play through both Dinky/Dino Bite and REPCONN. No freezing problems. So, now I am through those quests and on to better things. A shame it killed several days, but such is life. The only problem I have now is that whenever I exit the game, it freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to end the FalloutNV process. It's an annoyance, but I can live with it. Thanks to all those, who offered advice.

I am guessing there is no other way of simply deleting the steam files and re-uploading it from the website without having to pay for it again? I had my game crash and everytime I go and try to play it, it says error aplication from the launch from NMM. When I tried going directly to Steam's launch of the game on my profile and it keeps saying error as well. I uninstalled all my mods but having deleted my saves where I used all of them. Is there just a way I can go to my saves, delete them, and test launch it with only Vanilla contents?

Update your steam client, they released a patch yesterday to fix installing from older installation media.

Go to your Steam Library in Steam, right click Fallout: New Vegas, select properties. Go to the the UPDATES tab, at the bottom is Steam Cloud section. Uncheck the box that enables Steam Cloud synchronization for Fallout: New Vegas.

In the same directory where your .ini files are stored is the "Saves" folder, delete it.

You can also delete your game folder again in steam directory.

When you reinstall from DVD, steam STILL needs to update the game to the current version, let it do so. Start a NEW game and you should be able to play again.

If you're having problems, Verify Integrith of Game Cache before doint anything drastic. Might want to backup any .INI's you made custom edits to though.

Yes. Make sure you have no mods installed in your game directory. Launch game from Steam. Click New instead of Continue or Load. The only save you will lose is your last autosave. And if you want to keep that, go into your (Default is Documents\My Games\falloutnv\saves) folder and copy all the files you want to a new location.

No idea if anyone still reads this anymore but i installed fallout new vegas clean by:

1. Deleting the folder for fallout new vegas in the c drive, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common for my computer and is the default.

2. Then I had to delete the ini files in documents by deleting the fallout new vegas folder in, C:\Users\Josh\Documents\My Games

3. Removed them in my recycling bin

4. Then uninstalled fallout mod manager

Beware: This will delete all saved games and any previous mods you have installed and it could mess up fallout 3 mods if fallout mod manager is used for that as well.

This may have already been posted somewhere and also i used steam to download it.
