RatcatcherOfKvatch
So if you can make "Fortify Speed" potions -- the Wiley E. Coyote Rocket Skates of Cyrodiil -- do you really need a horse? You can drink those things like up to 4 at a time, so even if your base speed is terrible you can still gulp down some jet fuel and rocket across the continent. Is there any advantage to having a horse? Once you have rocket skates I mean?
majikmonkee
Nah, horses don't stack with speed spells and potions. I similarly have three separate speed spells I cast in succession and they all stack so I'm faster on foot than with any horse.
WeissYohji
I stopped using horses altogether with one character that I made for the sole purpose of seeing just how broken Oblivion is. But I didn't make any "Fortify Speed" potions. I just made a bunch of spells that fortified speed, athletics, acrobatics, and a bunch of other attributes, stats, and skills, then chain-casted all of them. Cue a character who can run and jump from Cloud Ruler Temple all the way to Leyawiin in only a few minutes. Of course, why ride when you can run around Cyrodiil and the Shivering Isles? Last time I checked, riding a horse didn't build your athletics skill.
Smooth613
I prefer to use horses a lot of the time. I tend to roleplay to some extent so it fits my style of gameplay. So with my tweaks, described briefly below, I need a horse if I want to travel long distances with any speed. I also use mods that adjust the timescale depending on means of travel. I use custom tweaks to adjust the Run Speed Multiplier so my character isn't faster than a horse even with 120 Speed. My custom tweaks also modify jumping and the fall damage related to how far you fall. For example my character with 100 Acrobatics can only jump high enough to clear a fence. I find this more than sufficient. He also falls much faster from long distances and takes damage proportionate to how long/far he falls. He takes 125 points of damage for falling from the top of an average fort for example. I find this works well as that's about 3-4 stories.
majikmonkee
I use horses for RP purposes as well, but only when I travel solo because my companions mostly can't ride horses. When I go solo though, it's usually either Shadowmere, the Akatosh mount, or my armored elephant.
