Suggestion: Mass email/PM from uploader to downloaders

There was a huge bug in one of my recent mods, and I thought it would have been nice to be able to alert everybody who downloaded it. As a downloader, I would personally appreciate this kind of alert instead of having to track every file that I've downloaded.

Obviously I don't know how hard it would be to implement this sort of thing. Also, if you didn't put in some reasonable limits, I could see some mod authors exploiting this, or downloaders complaining about getting spammed, etc. But I just wanted to put the idea out there.

I'm afraid it might quickly disintegrate into mass spamming. I mean, some people download hundreds/thousands of mods. Imagine what kind of a clutter that might turn into if people sent out a message every time they changed the location of a crate in the mod? The best method right now is to just update the mod and post the notice in the description. That way when people run into the bug, they can come back to the mod's page and see that you've made a fix.

I have been here for some time, to date the email system has been used twice...both announcements relevant to the site.

I can almost guarantee this will never happen. The nexus values your privacy, and we will not allow you to be spammed with emails.

A feature like this has many good intensions... but really it will lead to lots of spamming of emails.

Especially if it's automated.

Would you really like to get an email every single time a file gets uploaded to a mod you've already downloaded?

I certainly wouldn't... maybe certain ones.

Which is why we have the tracking feature... We can track our favourites and look to see if a new file has been uploaded recently (Great feature!)

Also another thing we have is Updates Today and Updates Recently, these again are great features that show updates on ALL mods related to that particular game.

So yeah. There are already 3 features that help you keep in touch. But it's up to the mod user to find out, not the uploader.

(I hope this helps in some way or form)

Nope, I don't think we are ever going to support a "push" notification scheme. Everything is opt-in.

Members have to choose to receive email notifications to threads they subscribe to.

Members also choose which mods they want to "track" as well.

On a related note, could it be tied in with the tracking system? I mean, as it is, the tracking system isn't that useful. It doesn't notify you when something happens, and it doesn't show what changed, only something generic like "New image added". If there was a way that would allow a file author to add a message that would show up in the file tracking part, with the option to be notified, well....that'd be nice, I guess. I suppose it would be misused in some way too, but it's an idea.

The notification system does do something if you happen to go "Premium". You get a nice little notification tool (think the Facebook notification icon) which tells you of updates. Of course, you have to contribute money to get this (but if you happen to be a frequent user of the Nexus, yadda yadda, blatant plug for premium here, help the site, etc :P )
