BigBizkit
What are your thoughts on Bretons? While I play Breton characters, I cannot help but feel that they are just the fourth human race. Imperials have their place as the metropolitans, Redguards are distinct and Nords the proud warrior-esque community from the north. But Bretons? What makes them distinct? I think their elven heritage is not played upon enough to make them different - neither visually nor in other ways. If I had to remove one race from TES I'd go for them. As is I do not hate Bretons or anything, just curious what I might be missing about them.
cdcooley
Bretons are the only humans inclined toward magic, isn't that enough? My quick classification of the non-beast races is: Altmer - elven island dwelling magesOrsimer - elven wasteland and mountain inhabiting barbariansBosmer - elven forest dwelling savages and archersDunmer - elven plains and wasteland dwelling oddballs and generalists Bretons - human hill, coast, and mostly rural dwelling magesNords - human tundra dwelling barbariansRedguards - human desert dwelling warriorsImperials - human city dwelling traders and generalists Altmer and Bretons are known as magic users, many Imperials and Dunmer also use magic while mages among the other 4 are more rare. Lachdonin
Bretons are more an analogue for the victorian image of Medieval Europe. Questing Knights, Witch Covens, wizards in tall towers, the whole shabang. That's part of what led to the outrage over Oblivion... because they basically just turned the Imperials into more Bretons. Boombro
They are cannibalistic, tree-worshiping savagesWait, I thought they do it only in their homeland and they stopped after the alliance of the altmer?
Lachdonin
Certian groups of Bosmer seem to have stopped, and the Green Pact holds no sway outside of Valenwood (though we've been told since Morrowind that some Bosmer do uphold it even beyond their province) but the nature of their deal with Y'ffre makes it highly unlikely that they've abandoned it completely. Otherwise, they'd be piles of amorphous ooze.

Even for something like this it normal for someone of them to grow to like it or think it the norm, no?
Lachdonin
Well, the Green Pact is definately in full effect I'm Valenwood. The very existence of the Bosmer is rather dpendant on that. Outside Valenwood it's really up to the individual. Which goes fir just about every race in Tamriel. Just because the Dunmeri culture in Morrowind is predicated on backstabbing, murder and covert warfare, doesn't mean all Dunmer are going to be shifty, underhanded killers. The 'Stereotypes' that apply to the people's of Tamriel only exist on a provincial scale, and break down instantly when examining individuals.
