Bond123
I use Firefox and Star Downloader and have been accustomed till recently to using the inturruptable downloader for obtaining larger files from this site. The ability to do that seems to have been discontinued....and the downloader places a 4kb "download.php" file on the desktop. .php is a Microsoft Publisher format. What gives, because I haven't been able to get files at all with the vanilla downloader. I end up with a bunch of files a megabite or 3 short of a download and they won't resume. It's tiresome. Is the problem mine, or has the site changed.
Dark0ne
The download system has changed and as a result download accelerators/pausers are not currently supported. It's for security and anti-leeching basically.
Bond123
Sorry, I wouldn't understand how a downloader could effect security and I have no concept whatever of leeching. I was simply taking advantage of what the site offered and very much appreciating the service. I generally start the downloader about midnight and it shuts the net down when finished. Not using the downloader I get incomplete files and the net remains open and the page up for the entire night...seems a waste of bandwidth and clutsy for 56k user, particularly when you rarely get the file. For reference, this didn't use to happen and this site was as smooth as silk. Now it's a problem which forces me to find other sites for file downloads. I'm not faulting you for going for a subscription service and providing a perk for subscribers, however, you indicated that there would be no changes for those who did not subscribe. Not being able to download is a big change for this non-subscriber. Thank you, Dark0ne, for your swift attention to my problem post. You run a pretty fine ship actually, and give the site a lot of attention.
Dark0ne
Here's a good article on the problems caused by download accelerators. Unfortunately while it does help the individual user sometimes, it often affects others (and most people who use them are unaware of the problems it causes!). I'm not faulting you for going for a subscription service and providing a perk for subscribers, however, you indicated that there would be no changes for those who did not subscribe. Not being able to download is a big change for this non-subscriber. This change happened before the Supporter system was put in place and would have happened irrespective of whether I had launched the new system or not. Infact, this exact same problem would occur for you if you were a Supporter as well -- it's definately not a way to try and diminish the free service and promote the donation system. I understand that you're just experiencing problems and not being bashing, but unfortunately the changes made to the site had to be done; a sort of utilitarian "problem for the few to remedy the many" situation. Unfortunately you got the worst end of the deal. Sorry.
Bond123
Dark0ne, thank you for your time and the more detailed explanation. I certainly agree that if the changes made are for the better of the majority of the community then you made the right decisions. I'll still visit and download smaller files, and my apologies for this post in the first place. I just found a detailed explanation of the change posted in the Changes section on the left top of the games page. Please be assured I intend not even the slightest criticism of the way you operate this excellent resource.
Abramul
You might consider upgrading to low-speed DSL. I currently pay $18 a month, and my download speed from TESSource is (at time of post) ~85 KB/s.
