Oblivion Memory tipps?

Hello there,

I always encounter some very nasty memory leaks, like 1 sec freezes, (although I'm using OSR and Streamline 3.1) which most times lead to a CTD after 30 minutes of Oblivion playtime.

Are there maybe some tips for further improvement of stabillity?

Here some things:

RAM

Got 4 GB DDR2 ~ 1000Mhz

CPU

Q6600 @ 4x 2.94 GHZ

my .ini

iPreloadSizeLimit=52428800

uInterior Cell Buffer=6

uExterior Cell Buffer=72

uGridsToLoad=5

Also, all autosave functions have been disabled.

Also:

1) Are OSR and Streamline 3.1 compatible with each other?

2) should I reset the .ini values (mentioned above) to vanilla (because of OSR or Streamline 3.1)?

3) Any other tips from users who also run Oblivion with a Quad Core?

4) Is there a console command for clearing the whole cache (or most parts of the cache)?

Help would be much appreciated.

Do you have those problems with vanilla Oblivion (no mods...including texture replacers)?

Are you running Oblivion 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2?

Are you using large / medium / small textures?

What apps do you have running in the background? (Any HP printer/scanner utilities?)

Are you running on a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?

Hi there,

Nope.

Are you running Oblivion 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2?

1.2.4.6 Steam

Large (QTP3 Redimized) -> Geforce9800GTX+512MB

What apps do you have running in the background? (Any HP printer/scanner utilities?)

Nothing. I already tweaked my system to the max (only 40 tasks running in the background -> W7x64 N)

Your issue is probably due to your video cards memory size. While 512MB in theory should be enough for QTP3's Redimized version, I suspect Oblivion has issues with VRAM being filled similar to the issue with RAM (fixed by Streamline). I, for example, have an AMD Radeon 6870, with 1GB of Video RAM. Even though Oblivion reports to be only using at the max 700MB of VRAM, I still get pretty bad performance when running texture enhancer mods. When I remove these mods, I can crank Anti-Aliasing up to the maximum level, and use SuperSampling as the AA method. This method of AA generally produces higher quality AA results, but it works by upscaling the image between 2 and 4 times its original size, which would typically be much more Video RAM intensive than simply using larger texture sizes without any AA.

I suggest trying Oblivion without the texture mod and disable and LOD mods (i.e RAEVWD) and see if your performance goes back up.

Hmh, uninstalling QTP3 will be fun. >_<"

Furthermore, could this also be a sign of overloaded VRAM:

- After 30 minutes of play (and there is no CTD), my FPS goes batty and I only get 17-18 fps or less, with this dropdown, there also comes a HUGE mouse lag (although MaxRenderahead is set to 0).

More like a sign of overheating video card. Most recent video cards will slow down when they reach a certain temperature. They do this to prevent damage to the card from overheating. Check your fan and the air channels to make sure there is no dust clogging them up. Also check to be sure you have good airflow through your case.

1. Not recommended to use this mods together. Fps hit guaranteed.

2. Oblivion use only 2 hardware threads (e.g. 2 core). You not have additional performance boost on Quad core CPU

4. In console:

I'd just like to comment on the above. Nightaria, that is simply false. Streamline and OSR increase performance, not the opposite. Using them together is fine, and recommend. Especially for low to mid end systems. Personally I use both but only use Streamline for StreamPurge... Which leads me to the next point.

No need to use console commands, just set StreamPurge to do this for you automatically. It has multiple different levels for how often it will purge memory.
