Can OBSE be dangerous?

Hello Nexus Users,

I am thinking about using OBSE but a friend of mine told me it might be dangerous, without explaining in what way that might be.

What are your experiences? Are there any troubles with OBSE and can it harm my game, my system or anything else in any way?

In a nutshell, no. OBSE is a simple script extender that enhances Oblivion's capabilities but it in itself does not harm your game files, it is a very stable and well tested program. The potential danger is that it opens the door to many more complex mods you can't run without OBSE, but you should always take care with any mod you download, OBSE or not. So no, OBSE is no more dangerous than running mods you can use without it.

Yes, It killed 3 people last year. :whistling:

No, It's not dangerous at all. Not only has it not harmed anyone, I don't know of any instances where it has harmed a computer or game. Well over a million people use it now and it is a very popular and stable program.

The few complaints that I have investigated turned out to not be caused by OBSE, but by improperly installed mods or a problem with a mod and not the OBSE.

It is also required for many mods. If you don't have a mod that requires it, it won't do anything at all. If you do have a mod that requires it, your game will probably crash without it.

When I first came on the forum, I swore OBSE was the cause if frame rate issues I was having, turns out the first mod I needed it for and had installed at the same time was the culprit (a custom hairstyle with lots of polygons was causing it, of all things). Luckily, folks here encouraged me to keep looking for the real issue, because I couldn't live without some of my favorite OBSE supported mods!

No seriously, thanks for your answers, I think I'll give it a try then!

Is there anything I should pay special attention to?
