It really isn't complicated! it's is short for it is or it has its is the singular form of their and the impersonnal form of his or her. So if you can replace it's/its by "it is" or "it has", it means you should use "it's"If you can replace it by "his" or "her", you should use "its" :D http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/its.html
