hi could any of you knowledgeable guys or gals out there be able to help me please?

I have just purchased a new pc to run Oblivion a dual core athlon64 5200 2.71ghz 2gb ddr2 533 ram (supports overclocking)

my problem seems to be graphics being stuttery and some of the dialogue causing lag?

and was wandering if a nvidia geforce 9800gt help my game?

as the current graphics is integrated nvidia geforce n630a (512mb) on an ASRock motherboard and

oblivion defaulted to medium settings because of unrecognised chipset

sound is also on board so could be an issue to look at as well? sound card sorted

also was running in 800x600 also tried Very briefly on 640x480 (default medium

settings) which was worse.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm technically challenged, but the following mods have helped me considerably:

Quiet Feet MAX

Oblivion Stutter Remover

Some folks swear by this one, Streamline, which requires a lot of reading and configuring; there may be a good tutorial about it somewhere. I'll see what I can find.

Edit: Here's one that talks about configuring Streamline's INI files, and using some of its features along with OSR - link - hope some, or all, of this helps you.

Performance depends on the monitor resolution and whether or not you plan on using tons of CPU intensive mods. No offense, but those specs most definitely do not belong to a new computer, most of the components are several years old, in fact, that CPU was already old(ish) when Oblivion came out.

Based on your specs, I would not expect great performance, 2GB of RAM running at 133 mhz (the DDR2 533 clock rate), a low end motherboard, and an old CPU. And unless you're getting a really good deal on that 9800GT, I don't know why you wouldn't bother buying a new graphics card with better performance at the same price, maybe even less.

Basically, your entire computer is around 5 years old, so I don't know how you got it "new". When it comes to Oblivion, a newer CPU won't make much of a difference (it will with many applications and other games that have better support for multithreading), but you should have at least 4GB of RAM, rated at at least DDR2 800. I suggest a newer video card than the 9800GT, as you can purchase newer and better cards for the same price you'd end up paying for the 9800GT, unless you found someone willing to practically give it away.

The 9800 will do just great, and is cheap now. It has 128 streamprocessors compared to the 4 in your onboard ditto. Also when you get a "real" grafic card, you will release some memory for use in your system. True the AMD 5200 is not young any more. However I have played Oblivion on a 4800 with 1 gig of RAM and a GF 8800 GTS grafic card.

I managed to run in higest settings. A little lag now and then.

I build PC´s that I sell, btw.

Unfortunately the 9800 is now out of my price range now luckily I checked again before buying and

wasnt actually a 9800 and was useless! was well disappointed !!

am looking at older cards so that Oblivion has better chance of recognizing it

after all we all know that Oblivion gets tetchy with anything too new!

but if you or anyone knows of card that is not too expensive that will give

good performance with Oblivion, price range of £50 to roughly £70

wish I could afford more but that is about as much as can afford right now

but thank you for your post. Whoops meant to say thank you to ilthid and fonger

for their posts as well. ilthids being especially useful.

stutter was the worst problem, lag seemed to be on certain dialogues and was not heavy lag

also tried a 256mb card as experiment while in the shop and got smooth graphics

but crashed quickly so didnt get chance to test out.

thanks again all

almost any modern video card will play oblivion

the game won't recognize any card that was issued after the game was

simply tinker with your settings (usually up) until you get results you like.

its almost impossible to find a video card that's as old as this game is

even some current integrated chipsets will play this game

thanks Fonger and Balagor both sound like very good advice though still not

quite sure what to go for though

have found two cards in my price range a 9600 and 8600 but struggling to decide

also have to be slightly careful as power supply is only 450w and pretty sure

both of these cards would be okay in my system

one actually states needs 450w minimum think that is 512mb ddr3

the other is 1024mb ddr2 and cheaper

also have been using uesp as rough guide
