Alixen
This may seem like an odd question... but do you fight the Lich indoors or outdoors? See, if it's as powerful as you say, i'll be looking for a suitable spot to bring in the Dragon to 'save' Paige from a deathly situation. Fighting a powerful Lich that is waaay out of my league would count. Problem is I can only summon the Dragon outdoors or in tall/wide rooms. I was thinking of makin that point the Battle of Bruma; but whats the point in being a Dragon Knight if you are only such for %10 of the game? By the time I get to that point the MQ is almost over, and then it's all fanmade quests and petty stuff. I try to avoid doing every major questline; and just usually pick 1 'guild' or KotN, and the MQ. It's hard to RP the GreyFox, who is also the Archmage, while moonlighting as member of the Black Hand, between his duties as head of the Fighters Guild, when he's not defeating Umaril, or helping stop Mehrunes Dagon. xD My 'plan' this time around was to pick up Vilja (see! back on topic!) as my first companion, do the Fighters Guild quests up til Leyawinn so I can start the Knights of the White stallion questline (and so Paige can becoem a true Knight), then move onto the MQ. I suppose I could grab Vilja, do HoD, then move onto that order of things.
Kjkirimi
I use Dairanath Avari, although he's moody, dark, not so easy to get along with and has a terrible aim since most of his arrows end up in Aerith's head or neck ( he does seem to have a good aim for this ).I even modified his class so he's a master markasman. He also have a romance quest ( i'd rather not doing it since he becomes way too creepy after that ) After you finish the quest he becomes so sweet ( i changed that in cs so now he's moody again )But give him a good light armor and a long blade - he tends to preffer the double-handed ones and never uses dagers. I also made a mage character but got tired with her so now i only have dai. ( this sounds so... romantic:)) ) He's good to have around to back you up , especially since i modified his sneak skills and use Adrenaline Oblivion. majikmonkee
Unfortunately the lich is indoors. My Akatosh didn't get a lot of fighting action during HOD but it was a life saver in getting me to some of the quest destinations in the northern mountains. I justify having a RP character who does everything by having him complete DB first, then thieves guild, then attempt to redeem himself by doing the other guild quests and MQ. I space out finishing one quest line and starting a new one by doing daedric quests or wandering the wilderness.
Alixen
Ah well, shame about the Lich being indoors. Still... i'm sure Paige and Vilja can take it... *laughs nervously* Yeah, a thief going on to join the dark brotherhood, who then goes onto redeem himself via the Knights of the Nine can be very fun. majikmonkee
I'm sure you and those companions can take the lich. Ariana isn't a powerhouse or anything and we both had kind of junky weapons thankfully, like most companions, the lich chose to target her first, leaving me free to pound away at it. I've moved away from using companions who don't teleport to you if they get too far away. It's just too frustrating having to baby sit for them... David Brasher
I usually don't use any companions. Once in awhile it is fun, but there are a few things that bug me in no particular order: ( 1 ) The double face bug. ( 2 ) Companions smile too much. ( 3 ) Really bad companion combat AI. ( 4 ) Companions with broken gear, especially if they are streaking. ( 5 ) Non-essential companions who I have to spend all my time carefully guarding so they won't do anything stupid and die. I feel bad when they die. ( 6 ) Essential companions who are immortal and get killed over and over but always get up. (It is just so fake.) ( 7 ) Lag. ( 8 ) Badly done mods with no path-gridding so my companions can't follow right. ( 9 ) Badly done mods with load doors leading back into the same cell which stop my companions from following. ( 10 ) Hordes of companions that get in my way when I am trying to walk through narrow passageways. ( 11 ) Teleporting companions that always catch up when I use a load door or when I fast travel. (Companions are not as intelligent as my character is. Why can they learn such a cool teleport spell when I am an awesome mage and can't learn a spell like that?) But the gameworld is a richer place because of the existence of companions, so I am not anti-companion, I just need some alone-time and freedom. chakaru11
1.) Oh come on, the double face bug is hardly an issue any more. It's a bug the REALLY old companions have, but the recent ones don't. So in my book that doesn't really count as a reason not to use companions. 2.) I agree about the smile, that is creepy. This is common with CM partners, there are non CM companions around that don't smile that creepy axe murderer smile though. 4.) actually there are a lot of companions around that have an option to repair their gear themselves, as long as you provide them with repair hammers. Usually it's part of their companion options. 5.) That's actually a part of teamplay right there O.o If you don't like it, make them essential. I get that it's not nice to see them die, but trying to prevent that can actually add to the immersion of the game. 6.) OK, wow. If you look at it like that, reloading a save game after dying is fake too. If the game ended after your first death...7.) Well that might be right, but usually it's not the companion that causes the lagg but more the surrounding area, buildings, monsters...that combined with a second character can lead to lagg, yes. 8.) I totally agree. Mods without path grids are a pain in the ass, but not only for companions but for fighting enemies too. Watching dangerous, hostile creaturse walk into walls is laughable and totally breaks the mood of the mod XD 9.) Yup, that's why I only use companions that can be teleportet to you. But that is not just a custom companion problem. You can "get rid" of Martin or even your horse like that, too. Teleporting in general is a problem in Oblivion. About the last points... I give up. If you stick to lists like that, NOTHING in this game is really fun. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I loath companions too and I am NOT trying to talk you into using them. But picking something apart like that is rather one sided and kills any fun in it. Because a lot of the problems you listed appear in the game anyway, if you have companions or not. Smooth613
The only "companions" I've ever used is Phitt's Roaming NPC's, and they're not really companions. They're just random NPC's that roam the wilderness and will join you in your travels, sometimes. Other times they'll decline, I'm not sure what all is involved in they're decision making or if it's random. Never cared enough to check since I like the fact not all of them will join you every time. The NPC's vary from warrior types, to archers, mages, battlemages, merchants, etc... I rarely have them join me since I'm a lone assassin type character but it's fun occasionally and it's nice to have the option available. It's an excellent mod and I never play without it anymore. If they are non-essential, probably better not to get too attached to them anyway. lol There are lots of times I'll park all of my companions in the Battlehorn Castle dining room to talk about mudcrabs with one another while I go out and perform my unsavory deeds, they definitely have their time and place...
documn
I don't use companions. Their combat AI is just horrible, so I just gave up on them. Of the ones I tried, I liked Vilja the best.
