Steam and Bethesda remove paid modding from Skyrim Workshop

Wow, so much arguing going on...

I've donated well over $100 to various mod makers, not an impressive amount, but it doesn't hurt. Depending on how good SkyUI 5 was, I might have bought that as well. Of course with all the backlash, it doesn't seem likely that they will ever release it now. Paid or otherwise.

I would personally pay to install mods like: ENB, SKSE, Sky UI, Race Menu, CBBE, Bodyslide ect. because they improve the quality of the game by so much.

I can see why people might be upset at the idea of paying for mods, they've been free since Morrowind, so I think people are used to that. The idea is that since they are making mods using a program provided by Bethesda, that those mods shouldn't cost a dime. What they don't realise is that it takes an enormous amount of time to create a mod. It takes even more time just to learn how to mod.

As an artist I can sympathise with the mod creators.

Do I enjoy making artwork? Yes I do.

Would I like to get paid for making it? Yes I would.

Would people pay for my artwork? Eh, debatable.

Have I had people tell me that the five years I spent drawing is not worth getting paid for/paying for? Yeah.

Have I had people tell me that if I want to get paid for my art I should get a job in art? Yeah

I'm not going to stop drawing because people won't pay me, but it also gave me less incentive to bother posting it anymore. Eventually I posted less and less, until I shut my account for good.

Sure, it's great for people to see it and I like that people do enjoy it, but in the end, you ask for a dollar and you get a slap to the face from the very same people who profess to love your work.

(Need an example? Just check the posts on the SkyUI page.)

Then they say that your mod/art "Isn't good enough to get paid for" or "You're just greedy now."

"People should only mod if they love making mods, not for the sake of making money."

This coming from people who don't make mods is the reason we are in this mess. They don't understand, sure it's a labor of love, but throwing a bone our way doesn't hurt. But do you really think most mod authors see a dime? Hell, most people don't endorse the mods they like, much less toss a few dollars the author's way.

Some don't care about being paid, but when the opportunity to get paid gets lynched less than 24 hours out the gate, that's pretty pathetic.

The vocal majority of PC gamers have become the most pathetic, whiny, garbage group of entitled meat bags, I hesitate to call myself a PC gamer now. We are on a downward spiral because nobody ever gets satisfied. Don't settle for mediocre, but don't expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter.

Normally, I don't post much. But I will say this. In fanfictions I've written for Skyrim, I always put in my author's note that I deeply appreciate the work that the mod creators do and give them credit for their mods.

I will say it here. To those mod authors who work hard and tirelessly on the mods we use in Skyrim, Fallout, and the other Bethesda games, thank you for all the work you have done. I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

I think that the Donate button should also appear when you endorse a mod.
Something like: "It seems that you really liked this mod, would you like to donate to the author?" Edited by Quloide

My paid non-internet office job, which I make my living off of, is to listen to people complain all day.

If you can't handle a few trolls, then you shouldn't do anything involving the public. Everyone gets trolled. I was bullied as a kid but I grew from it. At least the people on your Steam page can't physically attack you.

You go on about entitlement, but you sound pretty entitled to the recognition of your mods. Mods get recognition on their merit of usefulness, not purely because you put a lot of effort into it (don't get me wrong, the fact that you put effort into it has merit too).

If you want to make money off of your artistic talents, make a game. I enjoyed webdesign and in a few work instances I made websites.

Don't try to make money off of an open source community. That's another thing, and it's quite an unethical thing.

Personally, I don't pay for mods, or donate to them. Why? Because I effectively have no money, due to a ton of different issues IRL. That being said? I wish that I could donate. However, I won't be forced into paying money, because its something I really just don't have. I do believe more people should donate to mods they like, if they have the money to do so. I, myself, opposed the paid mods ideas, but I don't hate the modders who tried to join in with Steam's paid mods idea to make money. However, I think that people who are ranting and raving at people because they didn't get the paid mods ability they wanted. You know, I hate to say it, and life sucks. It sucks for me cause I got no money to donate even when I want to, and it sucks because what you wanted wasn't as popular as the general community wanted. But I say we just move on. If you're going to throw a fit cause of this, and rant and rave and threaten to leave, then bye, i'll miss your talent, but I won't miss you. However, if you're willing to pick yourself up, and make the best of the situation, I would be all in for something (Though I don't know what would do it) that better encourages people to pay for mods. And I will hold no ill feelings about you because you wanted paid mods. Whats done is done, can we not just let it go, and choose to get along together? Fighting like this over a conflict thats already ended does nothing further anger people, and cause fighting, which won't change anything at this point. Better to let go, forgive whoever you feel wronged you because they took the side of for paid mods or the side of against paid mods, and just return to being a solid community. People will probably rage at me for this comment, and I expect it, but I felt it needed to be said.

Well, Beth and Valve pulled the plug because this idea was horrible in general. Everything that would be agreeable for modders and users alike, wasn't implemented at all. And I'm not surprised that this Beth blog post didn't sow up earlier. They just didn't think so. And the post is just a try to rectify the situation.

I have sat and read all the available info and comments, mostly pretty sensible, some hysterical and the rest!!. My own opinion, and it is just that, is Modders are entitled to be paid for their mods if that is what they want after all if you do not want to pay do not buy. I think there would need to be a lot of negotiations about this before anything was made official, especially about mods conflicting and the quite popular response of "if my mod conflicts with something in your game get rid of the mod it is conflicting with" I hasten to add this is not the normal response but it does happen usually with the words, it must be something in your game. Anyway why not all the main people, Modders could possibly choose maybe 2 or 3 members to represent them and then all get together and negociate the matter properly like any other business would. I also think the selling agent "Bethesda" only need about 10% as any other agent needs when all they do is supply space to advertise the sale.

As I said this is only my opinion and feel free to slag me off as much as you like but thanks for giving me the free space anyway.

It's nice to see Valve and Bethesda acting quickly on the matter. Realising that this was not implemented properly and shutting it down completely was the way to go at this point in my opinion.

I still think that it's weird they decided to start with Skyrim of all things. The workshop was not good enough for it to begin with, the community didn't really like it anyway and loads of mods were using resources from other mods. Somewhere in Bethesda's department some devs must have been crying all the time about how this would not work because it was not made to be modded the way other Valve games are.

However, I still hope they will go back to the drawing board and do it properly. I was even looking forward to giving my money for some of those mods that were announced for Steam like the ones made by Chesko.
