Benny as a Follower/Companion

Alright so I don't know how many people out there even consider Benny as someone who can help take new vegas. The one thing that bugs me the most is the fact that he says he'd be willing to help you take New vegas but you NEVER get to say anything in return to that comment... You just get sent back to the main menu. Now I found the Cortex Scrambler and figured I'd use that on Benny after I've massacred the Legion... Problem- He still disappears off the face of the earth.

Maybe I don't necessarily want him as a companion so much as return to the tops at the very least, even if your conversation with him is to say 'nevermind'. It doesn't really matter so long as he's there. That's the biggest flaw I saw in the plot, like he'll be gone from the game either way. >.> It would be cool to get him as a companion but that's not really needed if the person who's willing to do this request doesn't want to... Just really would like to have Benny still in the game after saving him from Caesar... It's like he was fated to be gone in the game... which i dun think is cool.

Honestly that sounds sweet, from a certain perspective: Have a companion that hates you and secretly wants to kill you, and you need to find ways to stop him while keeping him around and alive? It'd be great if the player wasn't expecting it.

On the other hand, he's also a resourceful and ambitious guy with a code of honor that is oddly fitting for the Mohave Wasteland and the Vegas Strip in particular-- he does what needs doing, but he does take pride in being...ah...up front about his underhandedness. You know, like wanting to look people in the eye when he kills 'em. (Reminds me of Mal in Firefly-- "I ever shoot you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed." So, you know, leave out the last bit and you've got Benny.)

 

I think he'd be a great companion-- funny as hell and all too willing to do your dirty work for you, 'long as it gets the two of you the Strip. And that could even be a good twist to the character as a companion-- like how some of them will walk out on you if they disapprove of who you help? Benny helps as long as you follow the Independent Vegas option, but start siding with any group too much, and you have to worry he'll leave, or more likely shoot you again. :P

 

Frankly I'm amazed no one's done a companion mod for him. It's been requested here a couple of times now.

Just to give a heads up, I've been working on bits of a Benny Companion mod here and there when I get the spare time. Feel free to browse my other two companion mods (linked in my sig) if you want an idea of how I style my companion mods. Right now he's got about 100 lines of new dialogue, which pertain to everything on the companion wheel, miscellaneous reactions like overburdened, stealthing, and stimming, and a few custom reactions like the female courier changing into something sexy, receiving gifts like cigarettes and booze, sitting down, etc.

 

The overall goal is to provide a few distinct ways that the companion mod can play out; one for those who want to torment him and think that death's too good, one for romance (Black Widows only), and the typical goody-two-shoes "I wanna be your friend" approach. Recruitment as I'm implementing it would consist of either slaughtering Caesar's entire force to free him, having him delay using the Stealth Boy until AFTER you've left the tent (then meeting you later), or convincing Caesar to let you keep him as a slave --- the latter entails an explosive slave collar to keep him in check. In all other scenarios, you risk him turning on you if you stray from the Independent Vegas storyline, or a guaranteed betrayal at Hoover Dam to everyone but those who are romancing him. Regardless of how you treat him, he responds to all commands and suggestions in his usual perky manner, which usually isn't very genuine.

 

Can't give a release date since real life tends to get in the way of what I want at times, but I just wanted to say that something is definitely working on it. :)

 

I'd also be happy to take perk ideas. Right now I'm thinking of calling it "Aces Up" for the casino reference, and the only idea for an effect I've had is to give substantial critical hit defense based on the number of luxury items you've got (cigarettes, alcohol, nice suits and dresses, etc.) Seems to fit his personality and fixation on the high life, but I can imagine a lot of people considering this idea to be "meh".

Not only all of that but since Matthew Perry is apparantly an avid Fallout player, he may be somewhere he on the boards or modding in his free time, and who knows if your that lucky (If I was I'd play the damn lottery =P )

 

then maybe you could get him to add in a few lines as a player not an actor.

That would depend on whether he plays the PC version; for some reason I'm thinking 360, maybe something I read a while back. At any rate I've already combed out quite a lot of lines from his two appearances in New Vegas, without needing to resort to messy edits, so I don't think it'd be necessary in order to make a decent mod. I can try and record a short video if anyone's interested in seeing how he plays as a follower so far.

 

In regards to the other thread you've linked... I'm already accommodating Black Widows with some extra features.

That doesn't sound bad. Maybe something along the lines of boosting charisma or luck, or getting into casinos without giving up all your weapons since he heads one of the families...eh, I suck at coming up with perk ideas. :>

I found this recent thread.... so, drg6525, you're working on a Benny companion mod? That'd be so awesome!

 

If it's too long a process, though, I''d just be content with a quick mod that allows him to escape if you give him the stealth boy and the lockpick.... WITHOUT all of Caesar's legion attacking you. I mean, I still haven't done that quest in the hope of a mod that allows me to make Benny escape in a more realistic way than that of single handedly killing a whole legion of bloodthirsty fanatics.
