Gothic III

Well I now have Gothic 3 and have played a little bit of it. The game took some serious tweaking (with the help of Switch) to get it to play just right. While it doesn't feel like a "gothic" game, it is certainly closer then anything else could do. :) I am enjoying it so far, but I REALLY miss the old voices. I know, the main character's voice has changed each game, but at least the second one was not a big leap from the first. They all fit the characters... and at least Diego has a decent voice again. *shudders violently at the memory of Gothic 2 diego voice* I'm most likely going to go the mage route. :)

As it seems G3 will soon be out in the US I would like to advise on a couple of game bugs and features that can be a nuisance. I have phrased them so I hope they are not spoilers. Indeed without knowing them you are more likely to find the game ruined for you.

Before I do I would add that I prefer the game to Oblivion (though not Morrowind) as it is far more challenging. However the glitches cannot be ignored.

Most of the time you are doing quests to gain reputation as it is needed to meet the bosses of each town etc. Reputation is obtained by doing quests and if the quests cannot be completed for any reason you don't get reputation. Most cities have more than enough quests, so that if one fails it is not the end of the world. Also many quests are either/or giving reputation to different factions. Either way you need to complete them.

Bug 1 - NPCs and quest creatures may disappear on reload or by running into walls. The quests cannot then be completed.

Bug 2 - If you have to save a game when a dungeon is only half cleared out, there is a risk that the reload will have lost any corpses. This usually does not matter. You lose the loot but it is not so great. Unfortunately you also lose any quest items that would have been on the corpses. This can break the main quest.

Design Fault - Even if you support the invaders (orcs) when you reach Nordmar you have to kill a great many. They are usually in camps. When you have decimated the camp by 90% or so, the rest run away. In several places the orc shaman has a quest item. If he runs away it is lost to the game and the quest cannot be completed.

Annoyance - at one point in the main quest you must make a choice (of three). When you do so a number of different options open up for you depending on the choice but also several quests become unplayable. There is a logic to it but no warning or indication and the quest stays open in the journal. The reputation points are not available.

Suggested solutions (anyone else can add to it please) -

The first two bugs apply in my game when a third bug is operating that speeds time. The lighting changes rapidly from night to day and back and the timing goes haywire (day 2 becomes day 319) etc. If you save often you can go back to before the timimg bug struck and then I have had no probs.

When clearing orc camps make sure you save before you start and kill the shaman as soon as you can. In any case don't let him run away.

Leave the choice until you have closed as many open quests as you can/want.

A separate bug means you cannot learn the skill 'brew poisons' as an alchemist, even though it says you do and you pay the money. It has not been fixed in any patch to date. Only solution I know is to use the console.

Two hints - don't waste skill points on alchemy, both that skill and almost all 'ancient knowledge' you will want can be found in other ways. Lifting different millstones (once you are strong enough) will give you a bonus.

The game has been out for almost a week now in the US. :) Thanks for the two hints, will definetly keep those in mind. A friend of mine ran into the disappearing NPCs glitch.

I'm still not sure whether to side with the Orcs or not. I'm worried about losing out on magic choices if I do. Oh and good thing I didn't plan on getting alchemy for a while, haha.

Wait until you have to make your momentous choice (you'll know what it is when you get there) before siding with anyone. Killing off small parties of orcs will not affect reputation but liberating too many cities before you have the formal quest to do so (if you go down that route) will cause serious problems.

Oh, ok. Thanks a lot for that tip too. You are a source of useful information. :) I'll have to let my friend that is playing it as well know. I think he's already trying to liberate places... Keep the useful info coming.

I still can't decide on being a dual wielder or a mage, haha.

**Potential Spoilers**

*Cough* What sort of serious problems are we talking about here? I've sort of liberated every city in Myrtana, often without receiving a quest to do so (mainly because after Silden, the orcs went kill on sight everywhere, and because I often couldn't find any rebels around towns). I have noticed that even orcs and mercs outside of Myrtana now attack me on sight... is this going to break the main quest?

It will stop you getting quests and therefore restrict levelling choices. However it will only screw the main quest if you did not get the divine artifact from Vak, the orc leader in I think Trelis. If he ran off with it, you cannot complete the main quest.

Well. I think you can spawn the item using the console if you are really stuck.

A new G3 question if I may?

Today I tried out the G3 demo and as a result ordered the game. Once I have installed it and patched with 1.09 I will tweak the Ini file as recommended in the links.

Now could I transfer a save file from the demo to the proper game to continue or do I need to start over again? (Hopeful I know).

BTW is there a way to jump in the game?

Cheers

:)

Dunno about the savefile conversion, depends on how they did the demo. Jump key for me was defaulted to left ALT key.

I don't think you can transfer the save game from the demo but surely it isn't so far into the game it makes much difference. Also they may not be totally comparable - does the demo have the teleport stone for instance?

You can jump, Alt + W. These commands will be in the booklet when you get the game. Please however read about the glitches referred to in my post above. It is not amusing when after five weeks playing you find you cannot complete the main quest.

For info this is the combined wisdom of the players on the official forum - 'do not liberate cities of orcs until you are given it as a quest by the King or you risk screwing up the main quest'.

You also lose a great number of miscellaneous quests that help with levelling and give you more points to allocate to skills.

A bit more info like this in the intro would have been useful. I do not believe in being spoon fed (like Oblivion) but there are limits to my patience.

It is why I did my hints post. I feel this info should be available to the player at the start.
