What do you want in a companion?

Hello everyone!

I'm making a companion mod and I want advice. What do you want to see in a companion nowadays. The only thing in set on is the gender. It seems like there's a bit of an over saturation of females so I decided to try and even that field and create a guy. But other than the gender, what do the wonderful people of the nexus want in a follower? (I'm mostly hunting for character advice/requests here but I'd be happy to take anything on functionality or even just general advice).

Thanks everyone!

Basically some sort of character arc. As in the companion is a tad different from when the player first met him. For example, Boone is now at peace or embracing his anger depending on the courier's choices. Compare that to his anger and sadness at the beginning.

I think the term is "romance", not porn. :P

But yeah no male romances as of yet for FNV, there are female romances but no males.

So basicly every character type have been made, so to do some companion who fits into the "standard" architype is not recommended.

try to make a normal person with hobbys, motives and political philosophy, backstory is good too, like; why i she/he or it in the Nevada desert.

In my opinion, a companion should be someone that either portrays a certain character arc that you either never would normally be associated with (Niner = Junkie/ Ares = Crazy Sex Bot) or has a personality that makes them unique in the game(Willow=Cheery & Childish\ Desmond = Kinda Anti-socail)

So I would say make something unique. The character just has to be enjoyable and interesting. Not someone that we feel we are protecting constantly, but a character we feel we could depend on in a fire fight.

I've given this advice before, and I'll do it again with the exact same words: Focus on making your character a person, not just a body following you around. Take a look at vanilla AND modded companions, see what the creators did to give them depth. And I don't mean some little backstory, because EVERYONE has a backstory. What you want is a character who can grow with your mod.

Think of yourself, and how events in your life have changed you as a person. Maybe you went a part of your life being incredibly selfish and it took some kind of event to make you change that part of yourself.

If your character can grow and develop, you've got a good companion, no matter what gender, race, or creed.

You can always shoot me a message if you have questions.

A companion whose first choice in a faction ending would be Legion. I just want one companion who doesn't hate the Legion and love the NCR. Just one.

There's quite a few man:

Many good suggestions here. I would like to add a few things I do not like to see in a companion : 1) no "forced greets". The player should be able to recruit the companion when the player is ready and not be interrupted because he gets too close to the potential companion. 2)no nagging or barking at the player when he kicks tumbleweed or knocks over a bucket (that is an annoying, imo, feature from Fallout 3. 3) no comments when the player decides to go into stealth mode.
