The state of New Vegas

I'm sure this topic has come up many times before but I thought perhaps someone could elighten me as to what I can expect anytime soon. New Vegas came out in Oct of 2010 and it's been about 3 months since then and only about a few weeks since I got it for a Christmas present. All in all the game looks spectacular and the play is wonderful...I love it just as I have all the other fallout games...I am a true fan. There are however a lot of things I don't like about the game, for instance, how they require the installation of invasive software like steam even to play a single player game...I mean it wasn't a good idea for Grand Theft Auto 4, why would they believe it would be for New Vegas? Also the addition of achievements is a neat thing but the fact that you can't even use the console for the simplest of things, even when there's a graphical glitch and you have to use tcl to escape being trapped on a piece of rubble, without having achievements disabled and worry if it has messed up your count towards gaining one achievement or the other. Also while Bethesda has made some amazing games, recently among them, they are of course famous for their hundreds of bugs they leave in game and never bother to fix...figuring that perhaps it's up to us unpaid fans to fix their shoddy workmanship. Of course, why wouldn't they since we're all so willing to pay for their half rate work, myself including sadly enough. New Vegas however seems more rushed than any other game i've seen them do with not only their common CTD bugs fraught through the game as in many others they've made but in this game also massive game breaking bugs that are obvious just in a quick run through. They have yet to even fix many of these as of yet even though not but a few days after release they made a 800M fix which was not only hell to attempt to download on the meager connection I have but also force as a requirement by steam before I could even consider playing the game. After that came a update for 600M, and then a few days after a 300M update and yet with all these update still dozens of game breaking bugs and incomplete portions of the game.

For example one of the largest i've noticed is the 'I Fought the Law' quest where it makes the powder gangers hostile to you in general even if your neutral to them as a faction(but okay I can get that, they're a gang and they hold up people) but even the named PG'S attack you even while disguised as one of them it's quite rediculous and even if you manage to get the quest and want to complete it as a good character...the ending you choose to allow the NCR to retake the facility is one big glitch. Not only does the radio say that the raid failed but in the end scenes most of the time it says that same also...that's outrageous. Not only that but i've heard it tell that there is not even a dalogue for the radio for the good outcome even written into the game...or at least it certainly can't be located through the GECK. Such a thing is ludicrous, what was Bethesda thinking and what about no radio announcements for when you clear Nipton's Highway or find out what happened in the town destroyed by the legion. Mr New Vegas just talks as if nothing even happened on either accounts and things are as they were before...not only that but the caravaneers and NCR troops act the same way as if the roads are still blocked even after you cleared them. There's not even mention of when you clear Deathclaws out of the Quarry for Shale, it's like they just copy and pasted a bunch of crap over and over again and then left most of the stuff, especially the side and main quests unfinished.

Among all of this ranting my main concern and question is...is Bethesda even going to bother with fixing these massive problems or will they leave them for us to fix as they have for many other of their games in the past, including fallout 3 and oblivion. And if we are left to compensate for these errors, many of which I think would be near impossible to fix(unless of course we can get Mr Newton to help us out for free :P) is it plausible to think that we can come up with a sort of massive unofficial patch. I know mods take a lot of time as well to create but i'm surprised that many have not converted some of the classic mods from fallout 3 into New Vegas...I love Robco Certified for f3 and in my opinion it and darnified along with the readius(thank god it god put into NV) were one of the best mods. Unfortunately I have seen no indication that greats like Robco certified are being converted though I have heard word that darnified is in the works so that makes me happy.

I am worried is all because I remember getting Fallout 3 when it first came out exited like a child at how great the game looked and when the commercial played on TV I was dying of anticipation and then when I played it I was floored by how amazing everything was...it was a dream come true and while it had it's problems many were fixed and it turned out to be one of the most amazing games i've ever seen though I felt cheated at the way they handled the DLCs forcing fans to buy the GOTY edition if they wanted Mothership Zeta, after making us all buy the DLC packs seperately beforehand, all except for Zeta. And while the commercial was amazing on TV and the game looks amazing and is another great addition to the series the game is so faulty and buggy I can no longer stand to play it...it's killing me not to but all the bugs in the game, even with the latest offfical update, are game breaking and too much. So I guess what I am really asking is...Is there any light at the end of the tunnel and how soon can we expect to see it if so? Sorry for the long post and I hope some of you can identify where I am coming from and I won't get deleted or silenced for my annoying ranting, but I thoguht if any place was good for such things and questions it would be among all you who have brough such uniqueness and improvement upon such amazing games. Thanks to you all :)

True enough but I thought it might be nice to hear others thoughts on it and perhaps if I got lucky might hear from someone with an inside knowledge ;) But you are correct and it seems to be a waiting game, especially with this game...why it would be released so incomplete is beyond me. IMO the push for a game without the thought for its quality and essentials is not only disgraceful but disheartening. :( But thanks for responding, least I wasn't completely ignored on my topic :P

I agree for the most part, While bugs in FO3 I found were rare, and few game breaking. I have however had quite literaly over 100 CTDs from NV already. Not to mention all of the other annoyances, like being told that Primm wimped out and accepted NCR rule when I put either slim or the sheriff from the prison in charge. Liberating Nelson and not getting a single mention of it. Correcting all of the communication errors (you know what im talking about.) with the NCR outposts and still no change in the overall interaction with NPCs and especialy the radio. I really feel that not only did they miss a lot of programming errors with the bugs, but whoever wrote the story archs and scripts just got bored halfway through and stopped trying to make a story worth seeing/hearing/being in, and just wanted to work his/her way to the end of it as fast as they could.

my thoughts exactly, seems like after copy/pasting through most of the scripts they just decided to hack it through to the end and come whatever may and either they'd fix it later when they had time between working on other projects or they'd let others like the modders here fix it for free while they got all the profits...rather disappointing. :(

I still think they were simply cramming more complexity into the game than the engine could handle. Perhaps that would explain why so many of the quest glitches mentioned above and at length on so many of these threads cause so many problems.

I've had the most trouble with quest order and quest interconnection so it looks to me as if the devs didn't get bored but realized they were just generating more and more glitches as they assembled the game. And that would be when they decided to take the scissors to it and release what they had.

Because if I'm guessing correctly here, when they hit an invisible tipping point in the overall software stability their only other option would be to tear the project down and start again. It's even possible that they did! Though it would be a cold day in hell before a software company would ever admit such a thing, (re; Duke Nukem, Postal 3 etc etc)

Well noone would doubt that the game is complex in it's features and ability but as far as too much complexity...they only added a few more features in the game than from F03 and that game had nowhere near the horrors that this game is showing to have and many of the errors in it were not especially game breaking but more annoying and perplexing...these errors in NV actually seek to ruin the game either by making a quest unable to be completed or by messing the game experience up by stating or showing complete opposite things that had occured or acting in game as if they didn't happen at all... I truly hope that they can clean up the act and get it together as this game has the potential to be one of the best they have made yet if only they don't just attempt to leave it and forget it to continue on their tirade of half done game production. I mean...I would loooooove to play Elderscrolls V or Fallout 4 but please perfect this great game first before attempting those, is all I ask.
