Zephyr2011
So I've decided to build a new computer for my room (our current one was purchased in 2002 I believe and is highly outdated for games like Oblivion and New Vegas as well as upcoming Skyrim, plus my Mom wants me to get a new computer for my room so that she doesn't have to compete with me for our current one when needing to pay bills or do work online etc.). In my room my current TV sits on top of a stand in the corner of my room within view of my bed, the head of which is approximately 15 feet away. I already have a surround-sound system (acquired 5 years ago I believe in an academic competion) for the speakers of my new computer. My plan is to replace my TV (purchased around 2000) with a new 32" 1080p HD LCD tv with 7HDMI inputs and an input for a computer enbling it to be switched between a normal TV and a computer monitor. Additionally for my media drive I will have a BD/DVD/CD reader-writer so that it also functions akin to a home theatre system (pop a blu-ray in the computer and play it through that with the surround sound). My graphics card is also HD. And my plan is to acquire a wireless keyboard and mouse (I didn't find any that I liked well enough on NewEgg so I believe I will search in local electronics stores for the pair) Monitor/TVHard Drive (Seagate Barracuda)Blu-Ray media driveGraphics Card HIS Radeon HD 5770RAM Corsair DominatorMother Board Asus SabertoothCPU Intel Core i7-950 BloomfieldPower Source Rosewill BRONZE Series RBR1000-M 1000WCase Rosewill ARMOR Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Additionally my OS and virus protection has not yet been selected (likely windows 7 with AVG) as I'm looking to see if I can get a good deal (use my current XP and by an upgrade to Win7 for cost efficiency) or if I feel that better virus protection is necessary. Please let me know your thoughts on this as well (but please save yourself the trouble if you advocate for Norton and don't bother suggesting it, I'm sick of its terrible inefficiency and ineffectiveness) Thanks for all of you suggestions and I apprecite your time. DISCLAIMER- I'm by no means a computer expert so if I forgot something please don't flip out or anything but I would highly appreciate your pointing it out. Thanks again. urbex
Go with MSE for an antivirus. Screen - It's alright. Ususally you want to stay away from using TVs as monitors, but as long as you're distanced from it you'll be fine.HDD - go with a caviar black from western digital or a spinpoint f3 from samsung. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=samsung_spinpoint_f3-_-22-152-185-_-ProductBlu-Ray Drive - It's fine as long as you actually utilize it.Graphics Card - Way too weak compared to the rest of your components. It will bottleneck like crazy. Go with a GTX 470 or 460. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127513&cm_re=gtx_470-_-14-127-513-_-ProductCPU - Why are you going with a last gen i7? Or even an i7 at all? You really don't need it unless you're going to be 3D modeling and encoding HD video 24/7. Assuming you want to stay with intel, I'd recommend an i5. Unless you really hate DRM, go with this sandybridge http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074MoBo - Looks Good, unless you decide to go with the CPU I recommended. Then go with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131682RAM - You really don't want triple channel ram with that mobo, so if you get it then get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231274&cm_re=gskill_4gb-_-20-231-274-_-Product PSU - Rosewill? Do you want your computer to explode? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 So yeah, not sure if that comes out to more or less $. I have one thing i would like to add about the video card. I would rather go with a Radeon HD 6950, than a GTX 460 or 470, but then i would advise you to get a 700 watt PSU. I own that Samsung HDD that Urbex linked and you wont regret it, if you buy it. Fast boot up and all that stuff. It's a good deal, I can only recommend it. Skip the Seagate. X3n0n2
Unless you're going to play the newest games with DX 11, get a GTX 460 / 470. Also, I agree with urbex about the CPU. If you're playing some really demanding game, you wouldn't even need a i7 yet, you can get a i5 for less, and still maintain smooth gameplay, even for demanding games. Illiad86
PSU - Rosewill? Do you want your computer to explode? .......... Just because it's cheap/generic-ish brand doesn't mean it's absolute garbage. I have a Rosewill Stallion 450W PSU and it hasn't blown up on me yet...... I've had it for over 3 years now. It's now running a 120W CPU (might be more, thing's at 4.0GHz), a 5770, and an XFi sound card...no issues. Your system looks good, I'd go AMD just because it's a lot cheaper lol. I'd try and find a nice 24-26" 1920x1200 monitor over an HDTV though. But if your going to use it as your home theater too, those Bravia's are pretty nice ;). Zephyr2011
Okay so I've gone with the HDD and RAM (probably two units of it for 8gb) suggested by Urbex. Went with This i5 processor and this graphics card and finally This power supply with these new parts it adds about $58 to the total cost (or only 14 if I go with just one set of the 4gb pack of ram) so it's not a huge issue there. On the subject of the TV I'm going to be about 15 feet away from it again so it's not a major issue VS. a monitor and it'd be really difficult to find a monitor that big for that cheap as it's going to serve triple function as my regular saelite TV, home theatre and my computer and the TV works well in that capacity. urbex
Stick with 4GB, you'll rarely utilize the extra 4. Using four sticks on a dual channel board isn't that smart either. Also, that motherboard is the wrong socket type for that i5.http://i.imgur.com/5SvjN.png - try looking for combos on top of that
Erik005
The i5-750 is the older generation. The new models are; i7-2600i7-2600ki5-2500i5-2500ki5-2300 The k models are for overclockers. The msi p67-gd65 is a great motherboard for these processors. These processors are very good both the i7-2600 and i5-2500 are faster than the i7-950 Edited January 10, 2011 by Erik005
