3d modelling -- which program do you recommend?

I reckon that you guys have been asked this before, but I tried the typical "blender vs maya vs max" in the search engine and came up with thousands of results (the bulk of them not being relevant). I tried searching the big search engines and came up with a lot of info and a lot of dumb stuff as well, but I am really wondering which program is best for fallout 3 and fallout: new vegas. So if anyone could help me choose, or even just point me to an old topic with the same theme, then I would appreciate it. And don't spare the details.

As a side question: if I were to switch (at some point in the future) from modding fallout 3 to modding half-life 2, would you still recommend the same program?

Hi!

Coming from point of view of someone who has only used blender before.

Blender is the easiest, i dont know about best. All i know is that blender is an amazing program.

U dont have to pay money for using it and tutorials are easier to find.

If i change to different game i do not change using blender.

If u are going to go to school for some kinda 3d stuff then i gues u get what they recommend tho.

I just recently got into modding again, after a 5 year leave. For my preferences, Max all the way. I tried Blender out seeing as it seems to be the preferred choice, obviously as it is free and does have a lot of features for a freeware program, but as stated, it took me 2 hours to figure out how to rotate the view. If you have a way of getting Max, I highly recommend it but, once again it's not free though.

I think it all comes down to training. I started with Blender because a good friend of mine created a Blender tutorial for Fallout 3 (a video tutorial), that I liked so much I made a word document version.

I've been using Blender now for just over 2 years, and I can do anything I need to including animations (Artisten created a tutorial for that too). I have nothing against Max, I tried the trial out and in the beginning found it just as confusing as Blender. Once I got used to Blender though, I never looked back.

The advantage that Max has is that Bethesda uses Max to make models for the game, so it will have the greatest compatibility overall - but at a cost of several thousand dollars. Blender is Free, but may be harder to learn - though I think that depends much on the tutorials you use.

Is it just the interface that you guys dislike about blender?

Pretty much. To my way of thinking, the easier it is for an individual to navigate the UI from the start, the easier it will be to learn and become more efficient with a program. Just how I view it though. As for the price, yeah, hefty price tag for it for what we are using it for but, some get it with the student discount, if that happens to be your area of study, or are even given a version of it from some schools (not many do this I would think). I say if you have the means to get it, try the trial out and most certainly try out blender. It's a great program, I just got used to the UI in Max lot faster. Some prefer Max, most others Blender. Just remember, it's not the program that makes the models, but the artist with the mouse and keyboard.

Not entirely. There are many things even the most basic things. for example: ngons are not supported  , the way it does face smoothing, the way it handles normals and face normals, it's a weaker poly modelling tool set.

It is basically unsupported in the industry. No engine I use natively comes with support. Even for oblivion, after what 4+ years of development the mod tools have only basic functionality. Zero ability to export any controller other than transform and morph and no data besides transform data.

The UI is just different for the sake of being different. It is not faster or more efficient, I do not see what the benefit to having it that way.

Personally, even though I don't get along with it very well, XSI mod tool is better for a free alternative imo. at least many game engines support it with offical tools, and it isn't an alien dookie UI.

So it's safe to say that you don't like it Ghogiel. :) lol

Despite all of that, Blender works Very well for basic modelling of objects in Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. If all you need are basic animations and 3D modelling, Blender has been a Fantastic tool for me.

The UI is quite useful if you know how to use it and are used to it - for Max users, of course it looks alien. ;)

As for support, I think the NIF team would disagree with you. :) In any respect, Max is the best tool for 3D modelling IF you can afford it.

My question for you Ghogiel is this: If we are fairly-well trained in Blender, how hard would it be to transition to Max if we can get a copy of it?
