144 Hz refresh rate

I'm considering buying a new monitor and I love playing Morrowind.

Does anybody have any thoughts if a 144 Hz Monitor will have any visual impact to Morrowind using Overhaul with a few extra mods over a 60 Hz Monitor ???

Also considering a G-Sync monitor and wondering if that would make any difference too....

What frame rate do you currently get? If it's anywhere near 60 I'll be rather jealous...

A commonly suggested stability tweak is editing the framerate clamping in morrowind.ini from 240 to 60.

If it were me (and I haven't done much reading around on this) I'd be more tempted by a decent G-Sync monitor. I really like the idea of Vsync (stopping screen tearing), just the implementation is pants (60 FPS -> 30 FPS -> 15 FPS -> ...). SO, from the marketing blurb G-Sync sounds a good idea. (Yeah, I know triple buffering, adaptive Vsync, yadda yadda).

Thanks for the reply !!

:)

Yeah, I splurged big time and just finished building a new gaming computer. Running the Inel i7 5820 chip overclocked to 4.0 Ghz with an overclocked PNY GTX980 that can do Gsync, so it can produce way more than my Monitor can handle.

I'm getting the FPS indicator on Morrowind routinely indicate 120-140 FPS, but my monitor is a 24" Samsung Syncmaster that only can run at 60 Hz, so I'm guessing that regardless what the FPS indicator is saying the image is being limited to 60 FPS.

What I'm curious about is that if I go a bit overboard and buy the new ASUS ROC GSync monitor that can do up to 144 FPS..... would I really see any visual difference in Morrowind...... or would the game itself restrict the image "smoothness" because of it's age.

Theoretically there should be a noticeable difference when moving and looking around at the same time in Morrowind between 60hz and 120hz, but I'd like to know for sure.

So.....I've been trying to find somebody who knows for sure or has the machine that can do 120hz or 144hz to get an opinion if Morrowind will really look any better or if the 2002 game is limited to it's image quality by itself, regardless of the machine.

Thanks again !!

I really dunno. The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is all around the persistence of vision thing. I'm sure, back in the day, people were saying there's no need to go above 48FPS as the human eye can't distinguish above that.

Heh. Supposedly, the USAF tested pilots for required times for identifying aircraft... they were able to do it from an image flashed for just 1/225th of a second. And that's time required for actual identification... not to notice that 'something' was there or not. I can't find a reliable source on that info, though, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I wouldn't get anything above a 60hz lcd panel for just morrowind, though. And I'd get a gsync or freesync lcd panel, if anything. Your money is probably better spent on other things, even if just a bigger standard lcd panel (like 32")... but a 24" is pretty much the sweet spot for gaming @ 1920x1080. Personally, I'd prefer a 22" @ 1680x1050 (mine died) but those are like impossible to find these days.
