Azura's Star Issues

So I've got Azura's Star. Problem is that in my mind, it's not working correctly.

Every time I trap a soul, it fills another soul gem first. Since Azura's Star is reusable, I'd prefer it if it always filled the star first.

This was a mere annoyance before, until I got Black Soul Gems. Obviously, I don't want to waste those on wolves, or crabs (I want to furnish my home with the souls of the great men and women of Cyrodiil). But whenever I trap a soul, there goes the black soul gem again.

The only thing I've managed to find on the subject suggested dropping all gems and pick them up again, but it just isn't working. I've done that repeatedly. For obvious reasons, dropping all gems (except Azura) before trapping any soul whatsoever isn't an option.

Is there any way to sort out Soul Gem priority?

I'm running OOO, if that is of any relevance.

Actually, the trapped soul automatically goes into the smallest soul gem in your inventory that is capable of holding the soul. Since Azura's star is the largest (usable) soul gem in the game; it will always fill last. OOO does not affect this.

Ahh, so I had it backwards lol. My apologies OP, I don't use Soul Gems that much.

Honestly, I don't carry any soul gems besides Azura's Star once I have it, the reason being that I hotkey the Star so I can quickly recharge items when I need to without accessing my inventory. On the rare occasion that I do, they are already filled grand soul gems so it's not really an issue.

This is precisely why I use, and recommend, the mod Soulgem Magic by TheNiceOne. Just like all of TNO's mods this is another excellent, near essential, mod produced by him. Below is an exert from the ReadMe covering the issues you depict in this thread.

=== Waste control

But there is more. One problematic facet of vanilla soulgems is that if you're not careful, your empty grand soulgem may suddenly be filled by a petty soul. With Soulgem Magic, this is no longer any problem, and how it solves it is dependent on your ini settings, specifically the "soulgemMode" setting.

Set soulgemMode to a value between 0 and 4, and the value, controls how well a soul must match the soulgem to not fall right through it. Normally, if the only empty soulgem you have is a grand one when you slaughter a rat, the grand soulgem gets wasted with a petty soul. With the soulgem waste control feature, you can set up the amount of waste allowed (0-4). With 0 waste, a soulgem will only hold souls equal to its capacity. With waste 1, a soulgem will only hold souls equal to, or one less than its capacity, etc., and with waste 4 (or higher), there are no restrictions.

Ex: Set soulgemMode to 1, and your grand soulgem may accept grand or greater souls, but any soul of a lesser type will fall thtough the soulgem. You will get the normal "You have captured a soulgem" message, but the soulgem will immediately empty itself again.

Thanks for the suggestion, but reading on the mod, it says "Black soulgems and Azura's Star is not affected by this mod.".

Black Soulgems and Azura's Star are precisely what I'm using and need to tweak. I kill a lot of chaff and want everything useless to tie to Azura's (for instant recharge of gear) while I'd want Black Soulgems to only charge on NPCs. The way soulgems work in this game is supremely annoying.

Use an infinite-storage addon for your inventory such as Automagicka Bags mod (my recommendation), Bag of Holding mod, or DS Portable Sacks.

Drop all your Soul Gems, Sigil Stones and other junk/clutter into these portable bags, and retain only the Azura's Star gems in your main inventory.

Next time you soul-trap, only the Azura's Star should get filled (since that is only soul-trap-holder gem "seen" by the game engine in the main inventory). I hope so anyway.

I don't use any of the default gems except for Azura's Star. All my enchantments are done with the awesome Runeskulls mod by Exnem (let you find unique artifacts called Runeskulls in random dungeons, and each Runeskull has its own unique set of multiple spells that can be used to enchant).

Yup. Unfortunately Azura's Star and Black Soul gems' behavior is hard coded into the game, so there is only so much a mod can ever do to fix it.

Normally the way it works is that souls will go into the smallest gem that can hold them. Azura's Star and Black Soul Gems are considered Grand Soul Gems for sizing purposes. However, they are both treated as special cases:

the game will try to fill Black Soul Gems after any normal Grand soul gems

the game will try to fill Azura's Star before any normal Grand Soul Gems

The wrinkle though is that the game will try to fill Black Soul Gems before Azura's Star. Having both in your inventory leads to wacky behavior like Azura's Star always filling last.
