BACKGROUND

SANCTUARYCLAVE

SanctuaryClave Is A Great Globe Made Up Partly Of ‘Natural’ But Also ‘Quasinatural’ Materials. It Exists In A Transdimensional Pocket And Was ‘Anchored’ To Cyborg City, the Triplecity.

It Is Divided Into thirteen subrealms:

SanctuaryPrime is the globe realm, dome spaced above, that was considered by the Second Nine to be all of SanctuaryClave. SanctuaryHub is at the core of SanctuaryPrime.

There were also three vast SanctuaryComs, one of which came to hold the intrusive Grand Necrotron. These are great service-support subrealms of great sophistication, power and advancement.

Then there are the great nine SanctuaryHavens, each of which is a living realm of many diversities of geography. These were semiwilderness and-or wilderness. The populations of sentient peoples seemed to be relatively small and underdeveloped technologically. The most advanced seemed to be involved in an early steam industrial age with muskets, steel and hot air balloons.

SanctuaryMind is the AI Supercomputer Network of Network-Systems that directs, coordinatates and service-supports SanctuaryClave in many ways. But it was attacked and heavily damaged, fragmented, so that for a long time it could not fully carry out its role.

SanctuaryHull is the very special hull of SanctuaryClave that is divided into Outer, Mid and Inner SanctuarySubhulls.

CITY OF CYBORGS

SHANGRILA PURITANICA

Monks whipped the common folks of this version of Shangrila as if their very existence was a crime against some warped vision of purity. They did so with crackling energy whips as the seminaked men or women or even older children screamed out in pain.

The people dwelt in harsh, basic conditions where the monks and priests treated them with cruelty that was supposed to be for their own ‘purity of enlightenment’. It was the opposite of the other false Shangrila but it was just as twisted.

Gratarg, Gradarg, Grafarg, BetaThirteen and others were attacking this brutal society, were freeing up the people who stood in shock and then ran towards freedom as fast as they could. Warrior-monks in power armour came out of rock buildings and hatches in the ground, firing miniguns, shortlong missile launchers, gattling-pulselasers and autoguns.

A swarm of wazzles struck down a whole platoon of the fanatics by dropping on top of them from a roof top.

Then the Great Priest came striding through the harsh rock city in monstrous power armour. He halted before the invaders, who came to a halt. Indeed all the fighting came to a halt.

His skin glowed bright white and his eyes glowed more so. Then he spoke out so all could hear. “The Great Plan of Purification has worked. The tricking of Vampirezza was surprisingly easy as was the planned interference in the creation of Retirawa. The rise of the First Nines on thirteen chosen Alternate Earths was well carried out, Retirawa falling to the delusion that it had caused it to happen. All thirteen chosen Alternate Earths needed the burning purification of nuclear fire or other destruction. While the plan did not go perfectly, it went well enough. Many billions of fallen folk were destroyed, they being unfit to exist. For only we of the Great Purity of the Burning Flames of Perfection have a right to exist.”

Which was when BetaThirteen moved forward to be closer to the monster of false purity, of extreme prejudice, of xenophobia.

Of the Antilife but not of the Great Shadow or Great Undeath, the Burning Flames had arisen in response to the intrusions of the Great Shadow and Great Undeath into the Multiverse where they had no natural business being. In the Great War of Ninety-Nine Universes, the Great Burning had carried out as much death, destruction and disruption as had the Great Undeath and Great Shadow. Also, like them, it had been heavily defeated and driven into the Swirling Star Waste Spirals of Time-Space to become trapped there.

So how had the Great Burning escaped to come there along with aspects of the Great Shadow and Great Undeath?

CITY OF CYBORGS

SHANGRILA PURITANICA

BetaThirteen sparkle shimmered and transformed into one great big armoured humanoid. He struck out at the Great Burning entity with a great sparkling, shining sword of solar elemental burning light. The intruder of the Great Burning vanished along with its half truths.

The new figure turned and grinned at Gratarg, Grafarg and Gradarg. “I am a strong avatar of President James Patriot Jackson. I have always been both President James Patriot Jackson and BetaThirteen but have not always been fully aware of my double identity.” He lost his grin. “What has happened to thirteen Alternate Earths came from the intervention of many powerful, and even not so powerful, forces all clashing together in what one could only call chaos. What happened was the creation of Retirawa, of Mr Smithdom, of the Doomsday Sequence, of the Great Necrotron, of you who are falsely known as the Second Nine, of Cyborgia and others but also of powerful forces that have yet to arise into the open. The arising of those other powerful forces will not happen for a long time to come so that is for the future to be concerned about.”

The avatar sighed. “I am Avatari James Patriot Jackson of the real Second Nine. Would be offended if I asked you and yours to take on the name of the Grand Twenty-Six?”

Gratarg growled softly in mild annoyance but then shrugged his big furry brothers. “You will need to meet with all of us in some form but for now we are scattered and are doing what is needed.”

“Good answer!” Avatari James Patriot Jackson nodded. “We are sorry that we deceived you in the way we did but we also took away our own memories for a long time so as to be able to observe what was taking place with out being discovered. Actually there is more than myself here now.”

Eight other hulking Avatar humanoids in super power armour appeared, six being female and two others beings male as Avatari James Patriot Jackson was. There were also three great animal creatures in super power armour, being a gorilla lie creature, an eagle like creature and a hunched crocodilian creature. On top of this there was a floating, bright sphere of flowing rainbow patterns.

The power that radiated from these ‘avatars’ was great, disciplined and skilled but at core was a terrible illness of mind, body and spirit.

A woman figure stepped forward, holding a great rifle like weapon in her hands, and she spoke with a kind of arrogant compassionate warmth. “I am Avatari Janer Patriot Jackson. We will come with you to the real Shangrila that is the great base itself where you, the fake Second Nine, were created. It is also where much else was done including the undeath turning of cyborgs to make the Necrotica units. But the truth is that deep beneath the Earthen Isles is not the actual real Shangrila but only the teleporting gateway that would take one deep within the ancient zetan mothership below Cyborg City.”

Avatari James Patriot Jackson bowed. “We thank you for doing what was needed to be done to gain us access to that place. You will be well rewarded.”

“You used us.” Gratarg sounded as he felt, angry. “You let us do your dirty work.”

Avatari Janer Patriot Jackson shrugged. “We were also in danger as BetaThirteen. We did not stay back and let you face all the threats alone or do all the ‘dirty work’; we never planned to do so. In truth we did more than you do. We killed two threatening Mr Smiths that you never knew of and made them vanish. We also did secret negotiations with the wozfolk, dragonfolk and others to make sure that they would assist you though we know they would probably have done so anyway. We also destroyed four terrible assassins sent by the Lords and Ladies of Transformation. We dealt with the Deeplighters and had them send elementals into battle quite early on as the troubles arose. We could not tell you this with out blowing our cover for by then we had come to know our true nature.”

Gratarg visibly relented and Grafarg spoke. “You are not telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Why do you want access to this ‘real Shangrila’?”

Avatari James Patriot Jackson scowled. “That is a question that you should not be asking. Clearly we are not in control of your minds as we should be by now. The infiltration-manipulation program has failed or has been sabotaged. We will need to deal with you in a more drastic fashion. Please forgive us but much is at stake.”

Then Avatari James Patriot Jackson slapped his hands together as did the other eight great humanoids of the ‘real Second Nine’. At once everything exploded with sparkling, shining, shimmering energies.

When it all cleared Gratarg, Gradarg and Grafarg floated semiconscious inside a great armaglass sphere of energy-fluids as did the others. That is except for BetaThirteen, of course.

But rescue soon came of a surprising kind.

CITY OF CYBORGS

THE BIG GATHERING

They were gathered together, all of the ‘Second Nine’ but now all were arisen and they were in a great domechamber of SanctuaryHubplex. All twenty-six of them were in tall humanoid shapeforms wearing metallic robes, be they men or women or neuters except for five neobabies.

The truth was coming to them now through a great fog of many half truths and falsehoods.

While it was true that the mingled meddling of many powerful forces had caused what had happened, there was one guiding force that had somehow managed to get what it wanted. This force had seemed desperate, even heroic, for a time. It was the First Nine of Alternate Earth #0123456789. Yes, they meant well enough, even seeing themselves as a bringer of a new and better future but they had triggered the Doomsday Sequence that had caused so much trouble on so many worlds, directly or indirectly.

They had created powerful clones of themselves, clones that had not even known that they were clones, and these had sacrificed themselves to be absorbed as part of the Undeath Nine.

Weakened, the real First Nine, of Alternate Earth #0123456789, had disguised themselves as AlphaThirteen. They had created the real Second Nine and had disguised them as BetaThirteen. Then they hid the truth from themselves and from BetaThirteen.

But now BetaThirteen were aware of the truth, was gone, and AlphaThirteen had vanished during the last phase of the battle close to the Triplecity Fusion Tripleglobe Power Station.

How had they learned all of this? By going through very many terabytes of data and by taking into account what they had learned from many entities. Yet they had also gained truth from something hidden that had arisen inside their own natures.

Gramarg spoke as songbirds sang in the flower-trees in the background, closer to the domechamber wall. “The First Nine of Alternate Earth #0123456789 managed to hijack control of what was a chaotic pattern of forces set off by the efforts of many powerful forces to take control of thirteen Alternate Earths. Why these particular worlds, we do not know.”

Then the tall, slimly muscular figure of Graham Maharg stepped forward into the ring in his leather trench-coat and leather coveralls, neither being actually made of leather. “These thirteen Alternate Earths are the closest worlds to the Swirling Star Waste Spirals of Time-Space. The Great Shadow, the Great Undeath and the Great Burning were drawn to these worlds in hope of escaping from their prison and from each other. Vampirezza came to be drawn to these same worlds out of her great addiction to feeding on sentient life energies.”

He frowned. “Retirawa, Mr Smithdom, the First Nines, all arose from the chaos of so many conflicting forces except for the First Nine of Alternate Earth #0123456789. Something else also directed their creation. They did so, from their own future while arrogantly trying to bend very dangerous natural laws. Even now they are reaching back to manipulate events but they have made an important mistake.”

Graharg spoke up. “Would that mistake be the Undeath Nine and the clones that they created as expendable to be absorbed by the undeath?”

Graham Maharg nodded. “Very much so. The Undeath Nine were all First Nines betrayed by the manipulations of what I have come to call the Patriot Nine, except their clones that they more directly betrayed. The Undeath Nine is gaining its freedom, with some assistance, inside the Grand Necrotron. It is seeking not revenge but justice against the actions of the Patriot Nine.”

A mild shudder went through the whole of the SanctuaryClave.

Graham Maharg went on speaking. “All of the Necrotron is being drawn into the Grand Necrotron, into itself, where the Undeath Nine are freeing themselves from the state of undeath that the Patriot Nine guided them into. The irony is that the Patriot Nine see themselves as heroes and their plans as being good for the future and its peoples. They are quite criminally insane.”

Gravarg then spoke. “Are you sure that the Patriot Nine are not being manipulated, have not always been manipulated?”

Graham Maharg gave a mild grin. “No, I am not sure. They began as nine fairly innocent teenagers who were impacted by very alien and very powerful forces. I say fairly innocent because all of them had genetic and environmentally driven character faults which have been amplified by them becoming the Patriot Nine, the First Nine of AltEarth #0123456789. Yes, there could be another force that has always manipulated them but the question is, what is it?”

Another shudder went through SanctuaryClave.

CITY OF CYBORGS

WHAT NOW?

SanctuaryPrime was quite calm, as was SanctuaryHub, and even the Grand Necrotron into which all the rest of the Necrotron had vanished into. Most of it had come from Cyborg City where it had been concealed but other Necrotron sections came from Alternate Earths, all thirteen of them.

Both the Patriot Nine, who had been disguised as AlphaThirteen, and the Avatari Nine, who had been disguised as BetaThirteen, could not be found. The Second Nine, who were changing their name to the Sanctuary26, tried hard but failed to find any trace of them, of Mr Smithdom, of Retirawa, of Vampirezza, of the Great Shadow, of the Great Undeath or the Great Burning.

The mysterious figure of Graham Maharg revealed that he was an agent of entities that might be called ‘spiritual transdimensional aliens’ and that were named the Lords and Ladies of the Light. Lords and Ladies of the Light were but one of the ‘forces’ attempting to deal with troubles of the thirteen Alternate Earths before the destructive ripple effects could cause harm to other aspects of the Multiverse. They feared that a gateway might be opened to allow any or all of the Great Three Enemies to escape from the Swirling Star Waste Spirals of Time-Space.

It was a time for resting, for restoration, for the building up of resources, for studying the events that had happened but also to make new plans.

Which was when they discovered both that Graham Maharg had vanished and that SanctuaryClave was sealed up, was now isolated from any other realm at least for a few years to come.

WAYS OF THE ETERNAL CHAMPION (LONE WANDERER)

MORE HEXAGON TROUBLES; THE DC BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL TAKES OVER

The Brotherhood of Steel in the DC Wastelands managed, against almost impossible odds, to make contact with the Brotherhood of Steel echelon in the surprisingly intact city of Brisbane, Australia. No Zbombs or other super weapons had effected that area of the smallest continent in the world, a very large land.

The Brotherhood of Steel of Australia were based on the old Australian SAS elite military forces along with some other former Australian Defence Force and other trained people. They had very little information to give on the Triplecity generally let alone on its incredible disappearance. They did speak of the extreme reaction to the event that had gone through various factions to the south be they the Azorines, the EarthEmpire, the Aarisha, the Abano, the TekOrder, the Enclaven or even the ANZUR who controlled a large part of far off Tasmania.

One Graham Maharg had visited the Australian Brotherhood of Steel and had assisted them in various ways including technical knowledge and information about a large hidden underground base of the old Australian and New Zealand Commonwealth. Ironically it was hidden close to the abandoned structure of the palace estate of the Duke and Duchess of Australia.

The baby held in Catherine’s arms had no interest in such matters. Catherine herself was looking more energetic, was healthier and more alert. Inside the large control room of the big Hexagon underground base she stood back as the DC Brotherhood of Steel explained that they were not leaving the Hexagon; far from it, they were taking it over. The scientists and other people were not happy about this and Professor James Ashblaze was the most vocal about it.

Why the change in DC Brotherhood of Steel plans? Because of the discovery that other Brotherhoods of Steel really did exist in other parts of the world along with the mysterious First Brother of Steel. Because of the appearance of supermutants and other threats appearing more in DC the Brotherhood had been going to leave the Hexagon but now planned to use it as a back up to the DC-Citadel. This was partly because they had learned of the troubles of the Californian Brotherhood of Steel now dealing with an aggressive set of forces including the New Californian Republic of Wastelanders and Caesar’s Empire of hybrid human-ape humanoids. What ever schisms were between the two factions, they still had loyalties to each other and the DC Brotherhood wanted room if their people fled from the Western Coast.

“Project Purity has no priority because it can not assist any of us in the shorter term.” The hulking Knight Commander Erik Lyons, younger brother to Elder Owyn Lyons but no less forceful, was in no way being effected by the ranting and raving of the professor. “The water purification part of Project Purity is to be separated and work will continue upon it.” He wore power armour modified with new forearm weapons, shoulder-clamps for altered bigger weapons, a special helmet 3Dcamera and other extras. He also had one of the very big Power Armour Semiautomatic Pistol or PASAPs that was holstered at his side; it was a double gun in one.

James stopped shouting, his face flushed red, and then tried hard to speak in a more reasonable tone of voice. “You have no right to take over this base.”

Erik gave him a blank look. “Perhaps not but for the sake of survival, we will do so. Most project work will not be interfered with or other activities of those already here. Very soon the new Leadership Council of the Hexagon will open up three new chairs for non Brotherhood representatives to sit on. Brotherhood of Steel normal reps will have three chairs and the Chairman will be one of us but he will only vote to break deadlocks. Please do not assume he or she will always vote on the side of the Brotherhood of Steel.”

James scowled. “I would be a fool to believe that last statement.” Then he turned to Catherine. “We are leaving. Please prepare to depart.”

But Catherine shook her head. “No, the baby and I are staying here in safety. I will not have her at risk by going with you across the DC Wastelands.”

James scowled at her. “What if we go to TekVault0101? They should be even safer than the Hexagon.”

But she just shook her head in a very determined fashion. James looked at her as if she was a traitor and then stormed out.

WAYS OF THE ETERNAL CHAMPION (LONE WANDERER)

THE PROFESSOR STEALS A BABY?

Professor James Ashblaze quietly entered the rooms he shared with his wife and child. He was surprised that Catherine was not there and that the baby Jasmine was there all alone. With a wild look in his eyes he took the child, a backpack and carrybag full of items, and he fled from there. He took with him a semiautomatic pistol, a combat knife and some hand-grenades stolen from the small armoury locker in that part of the Hexagon.

After he was gone Catherine came home with baby Jasmine in her arms. She quickly realised items had been taken, many of value and a few for her baby. She was puzzled for Jasmine was the only baby in the Hexagon at that time and nobody else could use most of the items anyway. Yet she notified security and the Brotherhood of Steel Police.

Catherine sat nursing Jasmine at her breast as security in blue fatigues and armbands investigated along with two BSP constables in assault power armour that was lighter than their battle power armour. Reports came in and it became clear that James had escaped from the Hexagon, along with some staunch followers and two androids, thanks to his great knowledge of the huge underground base.

Catherine had an odd sense that something, somebody, very important had been taken but that it would work out okay somehow.

The Brotherhood of Steel people were concerned that somebody would capture James and torture him to gain knowledge of how to infiltrate the Hexagon. They became determined to explore more of it and to make at least large parts of it more secure.

WAYS OF THE ETERNAL CHAMPION (LONE WANDERER)

THE PROFESSOR STARTS THE JOURNEY TO TEKVAULT0101

Professor James Ashblaze led the expedition across the DC Wastelands in survival power armour as worn by the others, even the androids. The other people at the Hexagon had not known of the survival power armour and would have been angry to know that James had kept the find of them secret. With the expedition floated on fanjets two MrPortys carrying extra equipment and supplies along a MrGutsy with added defensive firepower. Thankfully they had silenced the MrGutsy.

They were to follow the northern shoreline of the DC River until they reached the settlement of Rivertane that was part of the fledgling Unified Republic of Columbia. The Unified Republican Guard, the URG, patrolled the area on foot and in battlebuggies. The professor was confident the group could avoid them if they had to do so. Of more concern was the Brotherhood of Steel who would probably send out experienced scouts, in recon power armour, after him. They might even send deadlier agents in stealth power armour.

The professor did not realise, over estimating his own value, that the Brotherhood of Steel had far more important matters to focus on. There were the increasing problem of raiders coming in from the coast and supermutants come from some unknown place. At the same time some powerful force seemed to be supplying weapons, other equipment, and supplies to gangers, slavers and bandits in the area. There were also the Enclaven eyebots floating through the air and spouting bizarre patriotic nonsense from some new ‘President’.

They moved along crumbling smart-concrete footpaths that were close to the crumbling foreshore smart-concrete areas at the edge of the river. Big buildings, long abandoned but held upright by self repairing smart materials, loomed overhead. Radroaches scuttled along in the distance but were too smart to attack humans; they would only do so to protect eggs or food reserves.

Strange statues of tall, athletic, muscular male figures thrust up into the air in odd postures. Seagulls, crows and pigeons were seen in smallish numbers as they sought for food.

Doctor Ellen Patch spoke as she walked beside the professor. “Perhaps we could find some useful loot in this area of the city?”

The professor sounded doubtful. “Everything of use, that can be looted, has probably been looted long ago. Soon we will need to go underground into the subnetworks of the subway networks, the sewer networks and the utility networks. There is an emergency subway tunnel going underneath the river that was built as part of a network beneath the normal subway networks. It was supposedly built to be more resistant to damage than the normal parts of the subnetworks. I managed to gain hold of the security passkey codes to get us into the subnetwork and ID-smartbadges to get us past security turrets, roboremotes and robots.”

They continued to move at a steady pace with baby Catherine sleeping soundly in a capsule-cradle held by one of the MrPortys. The other humans assumed that the professor had brought the baby out of the drives of fatherhood but they were only partly right. The truth would have surprised, shocked and even turned them against him.

Mirelurks swam in the river along with diresharks and schools of smaller fish.
