SAVAGE FIGHTING NEAR THE EARTHEN ISLES

Gratarg leapt through the air and smashed through a cluster of shadowbeasts, the creatures being hurled aside and some of them vaporising. The Shadowthing before him lashed out with a great black shadowy whip that struck Gratarg with enough force to stop his lunging.

A gragoyle lay bleeding heavily on the ground as half a dozen wozzles dragged it steadily towards safety. The wozzles wore light power armour adapted to their shapeforms and decorated Wozzledom tribalistic fashion.

Pulselaser and pulseblaster fire filled the air along with bullets and shells. BetaThirteen and Cyborgia units, including human cyborgs now in power armour that were still called chopshots though they had new weapons.

Somehow Gratarg managed to roll to one side, to hit the ground and to unleash a great bolt of glowing ultraviolet light. As it struck the Shadowthing it screamed and flickered as deep inside it the red light threatened to go out. Then it stabilised but moved back and away to expose the thing that Gratarg was really after.

A green metallic glass globe full of the strange jelly substance that was lifted up by a distorted black robotic device. Inside, shown in a semitransparent manner, were the naked bodies of a pregnant Maggie and Wen, the slider clones being semiconscious or so Gratarg ‘sensed’.

Why were the two pregnant clones being taken to the Earthen Isles or at least in that direction?

From the Shadowthing issued a voice, alien and cold. “Aaahhh, Great Shadow consume you! Great Shadow of Shadowgods, Shadowlords and the Lesser Shadow.”

Gratarg edged to one side to try to get past the Shadowthing. “What of Mr Smithdom?”

Again the voice issued out. “As you know, Mr Smithdom is but a Shadowgod now growing in power from Lesser to Greater Shadowgod. You seek for me to give you secrets. Aaahhh, but Shadowthing has no secrets. Great Shadow smother you and absorb you!”

A squad of warlike wazzles raced past in the distance, armoured only naturally, but moving with great fighting savagery.

The wounded gragoyle was now safely underground and being attended by wozzle healers.

Then the Shadowthing suddenly flickered out of existence as did all of the shadow-entities in the area but Gratarg knew that their essence had been withdrawn by their those that commanded them.

Gratarg moved to the globe but it shimmered and vanished, proving itself to be a solid illusion, a very clever bit of projected trickery.

The real globe, Maggie and Wen were elsewhere and most likely being moved somewhere but where? Gratarg needed more help from the locals and not just Wozzledom of wazzles, wezzles, wizzles, wozzles and wuzzles.

CITY OF CYBORGS

LEARNING MORE TRUTH

“OmniResistance, we are mixture of Unity and zyborgs but we exist separate from UnityFree of UnityAlliance of our home world of AltEarth #123456780.” Sheva of OmniResistance sat on a big rock in a great hole of a smashed open chamber. Great pipes had been blown upwards so now they projected up into the air.

In the distance some molerats were hunting for fish in the great pool of water that filled a large part of the great hole of a space that had been once a two levelled underground structure.

Sheva, who was locally known as Arisa Jones, looked around at AlphaThirteen, at Grazarg in his duster who was crouched on another big rock, at a scattering of Cyborgia units. A cybrat was sitting in a her lap and was licking himself in a rather immodest fashion, one leg stuck up into the air, while Sheva lazily scratched its head.

Sheva spoke again. “We were sent to track down the great secret research and development station where the zyborg infestation swarm, the ZIS, was created. It was sent to Alternate Earth #0123456780; they the ZIS infected a small isolated population of Unity and they became Omnifolk who then created OmniResistance to try to survive. OmniResistance has been too extreme, especially in its rejection of UnityAlliance, but now is changing its attitude. On our home world the Omniforce had joined in a joint military campaign against the CyborgGods. I need to find a way to regenerate the others of my Nine to be able to work more effectively and be more able to find the hidden station.”

Graharg noted that the three gragoyles, two of which had come with Grazarg, did not seem to concerned about the First Regulator. He himself sensed a strong but subtle positive change in Grazarg that puzzled him. Grazarg could have said the same about Graharg.

Sheva then finished speaking for the moment. “Perhaps the base that the ZIS was created in was also where you clones were created, that is the Second Nine.”

Graharg frowned softly. “We suspect that our cloning took place in a base in SanctuaryClave itself.” Then he spoke about the slider clones and how six of them had been left for dead while Maggie and Wen were being taken towards the Earthen Isles in SanctuaryClave by a Shadowforce led by Mr Smith.

Sheva frowned. “Perhaps the same CyborgGod that created the ZIS and you Second Nine, perhaps it created the slider clones as well. The two female clones are pregnant to your sperm so the unborn children carry something of your special nature. Perhaps in that station the Great Shadow wishes to carry out some kind of scheme and I assume it would not be of a good nature.”

Any further discussion ended when the whole open chamber shook as great explosions erupted not far from where the pit lay.

CITY OF CYBORGS

AMBUSHED CONVOY OF UNDEATH #1

It was twilightish of very late afternoon and PUP military forces were scattered and many were retreating as Skynet pulsebeams, smart-missiles and rocket-shells struck down from a huge HK floating high in the sky above. Not just cheap mercenaries and conscripts were there but elite forces but Skynet was smashing them just as easily as it did the rest of the column.

Why was Skynet attacking there and then?

The PUP column had been moving along a wide, reasonably good condition road as a series of armoured all terrain vehicles on wheels, hoverpads and tracks. With them had come large military robots and hulking mecha striding on legs. There was also a mighty striding war robot, a Patriot Prime that was much like the Liberty Primes built in the USA before Doomsday.

Yet the real clue were nine big armoured hovertrucks marked with the SciTek Corporation and the TekOrder of TekRepublics. Like the rest of the convoy these eight monster vehicles had scattered so as to make less easy targets for the Skynet HK hovering very high overhead.

“In those TO machines is something most disturbing.” Grazarg lay on his belly and examined the scene ahead of the main group with sensorscan-binoculars. “Undeathly energies emanate weakly from it that remind me of the Necrotica.”

Graharg was more focused on the PUP soldiers and others including specialists of various kinds. “What ever unnaturalness is there, it has begun to influence, to infect, the humans in the convoy. Cyborgia scout units have sent back reports of sensing the same. The humans are becoming ‘abominations’.”

Grazarg aimed his pulse-snipergun and scoped onto a conscript soldier in body-armour but with some areas of skin showing. “Oddly sallow, even translucent skin with a glistening finish to it. Extremely pale eyes. Unnaturally elongated teeth. This is not quite like Necrotica in feel but is related. There is a sense of familiarity about this. We of the Second Nine have experienced this before.”

The distorted conscript was crouched close to a boulder and he took out a canteen but as he drank from it what trickled out of a corner of his mouth was not water but purple flecked rich red blood. The former human carefully put the canteen away and then licked up any of the purple flecked blood from his face.

A truck lay on its side and from it’s broken armoured side had spilt the drained bodies of soldiers, of mercenaries and conscripts, but they were alive though in a dreadful state. Each was attached to a strange device that encased them cage fashion and which was linked to mouth, nose, skull and neck.

Which was when the robots in the convoy turned on the undeathly creatures and began to attack them and when Skynet stopped attacking those robots. A mecha, on two mighty legs and not much smaller than any of the Patriot Primes, exploded as a Patriot Prime struck it with a volley of mininuke-rockets. A big robotic crawler, robotic gun-turrets unleashing volleys of fire, ran straight over undead soldiers who made no real move to escape.

Graharg frowned. “Earthnet has hacked the robotics there. How it has managed this, I do not know but I suspect some kind of betrayal is in order. On the other hand, if it was betrayal against the undeath, that is hopefully good.”

Graharg was not even sure how he knew that Earthnet had taken over the robots but suspected it had something to do with the changes he was going through.

Grazarg was going through the same sort of change as were Gratarg, Gramarg and Gravarg. They were growing closer linked together and to others of their kind. They were starting to remember clearly things that had been forgotten, perhaps deliberately, and deeply hidden.

Which was when one of the huge armoured trucks exploded open and up, out of it, came a great glistening monstrous humanoid in strange power armour. The undeathly force was strong with him for it was a he and upon his power armour was shown the personal emblem of World President James Patriot Jackson.

This thing had once been World President James Patriot Jackson of the First Nine or was it that simple?

World President James Patriot Jackson held up a great metallic staff of exotic dark design and there was a bright, harsh flash of light. He vanished but so did all of the nine great hulking armoured trucks.

At once all the undeathly human creatures fell dead and ceased to exist, burning away into a blackened greasy ash.

The deeply unnatural feeling of undeath vanished.

AMBUSHED CONVOY OF UNDEATH #2

The dying commander of the convoy, a highly expensive mercenary specialist, lay on his back with his power armour helmet missing. He was a patchskin, a kind of Wastelander mutation with patchwork skin colours, and he was a sunken wreck of what had once been a tall, muscular genetically engineered soldier.

General Kruger had been drained of life energies, blood and flesh in a fashion that he explained briefly as being burned, eaten alive and worse at once. “I led a large elite taskforce that found the nine of them encased in great armoured vaults hidden in a base that was hidden beneath a base that was hidden inside a base. It was in SanctuaryClave but we were given a quick way to get there, to access the Undeathly Nine and we found the great big trucks there. I should have known better; there were long dead workers and soldiers, all in power armour, all over the place. There were even scientists in specialist power armour.”

He shook his head. “All three bases showed signs of being abandoned in a great hurry except some areas full of the dead who did not make it. Yet we only accessed a relatively small area and great armoured doors would not open for us. We went there and departed as quickly as we could.”

He scowled for a while before he spoke some more. “When Mr Smith popped up to confront us, I began to suspect something was very wrong. We had thought that the TekOrder was behind our operation but the TekOrder has orders out to destroy all of Mr Smithdom and anything else to do with the Great Shadow. The same goes for what is called the Greater and Lesser Undeath including the Necrotica. The Enclaven has the same policy as does the Orderhood of Steel, the EarthEmpire, Skynet and a whole lot of other players, big and small.”

Graharg was perched on a rock. He frowned softly and rubbed a hand over his face to wipe away some dirt and sweat. Then he spoke. “There is a chance for you but it is up to the Light.”

The man looked puzzled. “Sounds like some kind of spiritual mumbo jumbo but then again I would have thought the same about the undeath before I encountered it. We found the gateway to SanctuaryClave…”

Thus he described the way to SanctuaryClave via a well hidden AltGate that was only about twenty or so kilometres from where they were. He explained how the specialist taskforce had met up with a larger PUP force upon returning to that world. Matters had quickly started going strange, going wrong, after that. The terrible influence of what was in the nine huge armoured trucks had reached out and began to ‘turn’ or feed upon those in the convoy. Those who were powerful enough to resist were either killed horribly or managed to escape.

Yet he also spoke about strange entities of glowing golden-white, green and blue that had struck at the convoy more than once. Most were floating spheres but some were humanoid warriors in exotic armour while fewer still were larger humanoids with strange and terrible powers. They had fought the undeath with much courage, destroying many of the vampires amongst the convoy, but had been driven off by what was in the nine big trucks.

Graharg and Grazarg summoned the Light and it came to the whole area, to their surprise, making all dead vampires and other dead or dying vanish. Some came back in altered human form, more enlightened now but some now also appeared in the form of glowing spheres of green, golden-white or blue elemental energies. This was new as far as the Second Nine were concerned and they were puzzled by it but pleased for the new elementals promised new strength.

CITY OF CYBORGS

FINDING THE BASE INSIDE THE BASE INSIDE THE BASE

“A very strong possibility lies beneath the second largest island of the Earthen Isles. There is a well shielded but powerful energy source there and what appears to be a very large structure, a complex of some kind. It is easily large enough to be a good sized city in its own right.”

Gravarg spoke as she indicated the islands showing on the zoomed in part of the holographic map of SanctuaryClave.

The Karmatta Triplets were there and were quietly observing. Joannie was holding a compact baby figure, a neobaby, who was sleepily fascinated by the holographic map. The baby girl’s name was Joaffie. Johnnie was holding a sleeping, compact neobaby boy named Joakkie.

There were others there now, one being Granarg, a tall male figure in Brotherhood of Steel power armour, stylised of course. He had secretly, to most, helped start Brotherhood of Steel Order in North America, Great Britain, Australia and other places. But the nearest surviving and thriving Order was right up north in the area known once as Queensland.

Graparg was an ape like creature in special power armour. She was being groomed by a cluster of worshipful cybkeys (cyborg monkeys) as she had no helmet on and she would sometimes fuss over one or feed it a tasty titbit of food.

Grasarg was a stealth warrior, a supreme female ninja or Kunoichi in special stealth power armour. She was with two followers who were either side of her and who looked much the same in their own special stealth power armour.

Granarg, Graparg and Grasarg had been brought forth to assist in the defence of SanctuaryClave or even SanctuaryHub in case of future attacks.

Gramarg looked agreeable to the idea. “We must form an expedition soon and send it deep down to the target site. Gratarg is close to the Earthen Isles, along with the BetaThirteen.”

But Gravarg looked grave. “I do not think it will be so easy. There appears to be some kind of transdimensional phaseshift barrier around the secret large base. Also Gratarg and his taskforce are already busy trying to track down the pregnant slider clones, Maggie and Wen.”

At that moment a strong shivering sparkle and shaking effect ran through SanctuaryClave. Alarms began to sound. It was far too easy to find out what was happening. Nine terrible undead creatures had appeared in the heartland of the Auziland Commonwealth. Though they were wreaking death, undeath and destruction on the small commonwealth, their focus seemed to be on the transdimensional anchor that held SanctuaryClave to Alternate Earth #0123456789. It was unclear what their actual intentions were towards the anchor but it was clearly not good.

Gramarg frowned. “It appears SanctuaryClave just became isolated from Earth #0123456789.”

“The First Nine or at least undead approximations of them.” Gratarg ran her hand over a proximity control panel, doing so in a particular pattern. “Unusual readings most unlike that of Necrotica.”

Then Jeannie of the triplets spoke. “They came from Alternate Earth #0123456788, the world that the original slider Wen the ninja came from. We know this though we do not know how we know this.”

The sparkling shimmer, shaking and alarms all ceased at once but the trouble was far from over for it was soon evident that a powerful force had enwrapped SanctuaryHub, isolating it from the rest of SanctuaryClave; they were trapped!

CITY OF CYBORGS

MAGGIE AND WEN FLOATING IN A GLOBE

Elemental dragons had found the real globe with Maggie and Wen the pregnant clones floating inside of it but others had tracked them including wozfolk of various kinds.

Gratarg slammed into the Shadowthing and hurled it backwards, its tentacles helplessly flung out into the air around it. He skidded to a halt close to the globe on its hoverdisk and touched the surface of the globe. At once he grimaced as horrific sensations ran through him. This was undeath technologies of the Necrotic kind and it was trying to convert both clones, to ‘turn’ them into Necrotic undeath but it was failing to do so. Some powerful force was protecting the two cloned women and that was most likely the life inside their bellies.

He summoned the Light and sighed with relief when it came.

The globe fractured but inside the fluid changed into water that drained harmlessly out onto the grassy area they were in. The Shadowthing screamed in an alien fashion and then changed to lay like some odd balloon-octopus on the grass. Now it looked far more natural and it seemed far less dangerous, ‘felt’ far less dangerous.

Other shadow creatures fled or died, fragmenting with the power of the Light. So how and why had this creature come from being a Shadowthing thanks to the intervention of the Light?

Soon Maggie and Wen lay on square inflatobeds on the grass while the creature was on a big plastic sheet and was being constantly sprayed by fresh water. The BetaThirteen were busy attending all three lifeforms with great care.

A Mr Smith had been seen earlier but he had fled, vanishing into the rather thick forest.

Gratarg was greatly concerned now that SanctuaryHub was cut off, was isolated, from the rest of SanctuaryClave. It meant that the forces of the Second Nine were divided and that neither could provide valuable resources to the other.

Then there were the nine hulking undead giants that were in the Auziland Commonwealth now surrounding the anchor tower that helped anchor SanctuaryClave to Alternate Earth #0123456789. Just what were those great monsters up to and what would they do next?

He frowned even as he tried to come up with some new ideas.

CITY OF CYBORGS

FLYING TO THE RESCUE OF THE ACT

It was a air-convoy of vertibirds, helicopters, aeroboats, aeroships and a single big aerobarge that took the military force as commanded by Graharg, towards the Auziland Commonwealth. News coming from there was not good. The capital settlement of the AuziCommonwealth, AuziTown, was burning ruins and many citizens were ‘turned’ or were dead or were dying while most had fled as refugees.

The Auzilander Defence Force, or ALDF, was trying valiantly to deal with the nine great undead figures and the lesser undead created by them but so far they were not doing very well at all.

The Peoples Union of People was collapsing as riots became rebellion became revolution. The old oppressive leaders were either dead, in prison or fleeing. Mercenaries and such as secret police were doing the same except for many mercenaries who had quickly switched sides along with all of the conscripts who had done the same.

They passed over a PUP settlement, at least the surface part of it, and noted some burning buildings but mostly they seemed to be intact. They could not even slow to assist but kept on flying as quickly as they could. The big circular shaped settlement would hopefully more than survive but thrive.

UnityFree was rising in the PUP and was one of the main reasons behind the collapse of the PUP. There had also been the corrupt, autocratic and clumsy side to the PUP itself that people had ceased to tolerate, even many of those that had once supported or been part of the PUP system.

TekOrder specialists and military ‘advisors’ were still there but they had quickly decided not to support the PUP any longer, had even helped to destroy it in hopes of making an agreement with what ever replaced it. They were not getting many positive signals and it seemed they might be pulling out to go home soon.

Dark stories were coming from the Auziland Commonwealth and Territories along with confusion as folks found it hard to decide what to believe. Still, many wanted to join the ACT and a few were willing to send reinforcements to help protect them.

CITY OF CYBORGS

THE TRUTH STARTS TO BE REVEALED

“Not two Alternate Earths but three have always been involved, if not more.” Gramarg ran her hands over some controls and data-symbols flowed across the big screen in front of her. They had been finding long well hidden databanks in the SanctuaryNetwork of SanctuaryClave and SanctuaryHub. They had been forced to question, and even abandon, many of their assumptions.

Gravarg was sitting in a complicated cybertech chair and was trying to access some hidden databanks but was having trouble with a true AI guard-hunter security program. “We have to find out not just more data but relevant data, clues to the real threat facing us.”

The two beautiful, strong women were in a chamber with five gragoyle bodyguards, androids, robots, Cyborgia units and the Karmatta Triplets, with their neobabies, who had become isolated from their family in Hopeville. A cyborg cat lay sleeping, curled up comfortably, in Gravarg’s lap and a cybrat was perched happily on one of Gramarg’s shoulders.

SanctuaryClave was older, larger and more complicated than they had once thought. There were actually more globular enclosed worlds than the one they were in, than the one that held SanctuaryHub. Of SanctuaryClave that in truth was only SanctuaryPrime. There were twelve other globular enclosed worlds, each of them being just as big as SanctuaryPrime. There were three SanctuaryComs and nine SanctuaryHavens. The SanctuaryComs were vast service-support networks of network-systems to the whole of SanctuaryClave. The SanctuaryHavens were wilderness or semiwilderness depending on how heavily they were populated by sentient peoples. None of these peoples seemed to be highly technologically advanced, the most advanced being in some kind of early steam industrial age.

It had been created from the basis of the Alternate Earths of #0123456780, #0123456788 and #0123456789. Now it appeared that Alternate Earths from #0123456781 to #0123456787 may have also been involved. All of these other seven Alternate Earths were also worlds that had suffered some form of Doomsday or other great form of catastrophe.

AltEarth #0123456781 had been struck by a huge meteor to be almost totally devastated and life was starting out again from the basics. Only the DeepVaults survived with the many Sleepers and the fewer Activers.

AltEarth #0123456782 had been hit by a terrible ice age, partly created by a nuclear war of a Doomsday, and humans struggled to exist in a few warmer zones known as the Wastelands. There were the Vaultfolk below ground also along with the Enclaven based in Lower Orbit and the Moon.

AltEarth #0123456783 was a world where no Doomsday had taken place, it was diverted, and it had gone on to survive in uneasy peace between old super powers. It was more advanced than AltEarth #0123456789 but despite efforts to control population growth and to colonise more of the Earth along with the solar system, was suffering overcrowding, shortages of essentials and other problems.

AltEarth #0123456784 was a world much like AltEarth #0123456789 except Doomsday had even been more destructive and the only life to survive were monstrous mutations on the surface and in the ‘subsurface’ along with the deeply buried and struggling ArkVault peoples. The Purple Jungle threatens to engulf the world while huge mutated monsters like Godzilla battle it and each other. Of humanity only the ghoulified survive on the surface and in the subsurface regions. Rogue robots are also active in the subsurface zones of the Subway Networks and other places. Newer threats are arising being the daleks, the cybermen and the clonetakken.

AltEarth #0123456785 had been also been a world much like AltEarth #0123456789 but it’s Doomsday had proven to be much less destructive. The United States and the Soviet Union survived as weaker versions of their old selves as did others like the European Union and the PanAfrican League. But there are Wastelands, the ghoulified and other menaces including supermutants, radscorpions and other things that are constantly threatening to escape from the Wastelands.

AltEarth #0123456786 had been struck a Doomsdays but that was over two thousand years in the future and such things as the Wastelands and the various factions of it were long gone. Instead the highly advanced and powerful Cybermagi were fighting the ElderOrders for control of the whole solar system.

AltEarth #0123456787 had suffered from a terrible outbreak of the (FEV variant) Red Virus Pandemic and only a minority of humans and other primates had survived as isolated or as immune. The Isolated were in the TekVaults. Of those that had survived, some were effected in very odd ways to become the terrible WhiteEyes while others fought them as the GlowingEyes to save humanity.

AltEarths #0123456789 was where on Doomsday of ‘limited nuclear war’ a great plague and infestation of undeathly horror had come upon the world. Zombies, vampires but also antivampire forces had risen on the world. The Great Shadow had sent monstrous envoys and other entities to that world through a transdimensional rift as had the Great Undeath. Survivors fought on the surface in various fragmented civilizations or hid away inside huge underground TekVaults. The Sisterhood of Slayers fought the Great Shadow and Great Undeath along with the Brotherhood of Steel and the New United Nations. Ironically one big enemy of the shadowfolk and undead were the ghoulified that were highly resistant to undeath feeding.

The clone Wen had said there was no Doomsday on that world but it turned out she was wrong. Gramarg and Gravarg were certain she had been fed false information with her clone programming-training.

AltEarth #0123456788 had suffered a Doomsday and about 1,000 years later human survivors of the NineEmpires were fighting monstrously evil mutations along with the insane cybernetic robotic EnclavenSkynet and the ZeRooshant zetans. Empires were Empire of Steel, TekEmpire, Rising Sun Empire, Eurasian Empire, Zaztek Empire, Oceanic Empire, PanAfrican Empire, Lunar Empire and the VaultWay Empire. The original non-clone Wen had come from the Rising Sun Empire.

Then there was Alt #0123456790 where, after Doomsday, Skynet was waging a savage world war with the FreeAlliance, Enclaven, the Orderhood of Steel, the TekEmpire and other forces who had formed a reluctant coalition against it known as the Coalition.

So how had the Great Shadow ended up in the BubbleCities of AltEarth #0123456780 and how was that impacting on AltEarth #0123456789? How was the Great Undeath involved in both AltEarths #0123456780 and #0123456789? What was the link that seemed to bind all ten Alternate Earths closely together?

They were still trying to find out.

A great sparkling shimmer and shudder ran through the chamber but no alarms rang for what was the point? The Undeathly Nine were trying to invade SanctuaryHub by blasting their way in or so Gramarg and Gravarg figured.

They were both right and wrong
