Where to start?

Alright...

So I've never played oblivion before, I installed francesco's so the leveling is more scaled. That being said, my first character is a caster; high elf, atronach, mage. So where do I start off? I went to start the main quest, but no luck there, couldn't even get into the oblivion gate never mind do whatever I have to do once in there. so where should I level? Where should I go?

Any general tips here?

lessee this is the general forum so the regular suggestions would amount to spoilers and cannot be posted here.

Gee that makes this a toughie.

Hunt brigands along the road is all that's left without being a spoiler.

Of course if you know who Mazoga is --- then you know about the shopping mall and how to make easy money.

You level by using your major skills. How to level is obviously *heavily* dependent on your class. If you are playing a thief archtype, run some break-ins and go wild. If you are a mage archetype, I would strongly recommend joining the Mages' Guild and following those quests until you are sent to the Arcane University (it will help you a lot). If you are a warrior archtype, do some dungeon crawls. Basically any dungeon is fine, but there are four on the Imperial Isle that are excellent to start with (being located very close to merchants you can sell loot to).

Since you are new to the game, I would suggest you to learn the basic controls and learning how to be getting around. And yeah, do not go stealing horses or breaking into houses :ninja: immediately; it is a surefire way to either die or land in jail - you just cannot beat many guards when you are a newbie with weak vanilla equipment.

Press TAB or F4 and see what are your current quests. Completing them is a good way to level up, and improve your fame and gain special rewards. If you just got out of the starting prison sewers, then the first sight of Imperial City can be a mind-blowing experience!

I am telling you just the bare essentials to get off to a good start.

Travelling to Weynon Priory for the next stage of the main quest should be your immediate priority if you want to play without additional cheats or mods. Maybe you will get something useful there.

Scroll through the world map to see which places are unlocked for you. You may be able to fast travel there. Dungeons and roadside bandits/creatures will give you the starting armor/weapons. Arena in Imperial City is a another good place to level up quickly.

Merchant Shops, Fighter's Guild and Mages Guild can be found in each city, so get some new quests from those places.

If you only installed Francesco's, I would recommend to install FCOM (which includes Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, Martigen's Monster Mod, Oblivion WarCry, and Francesco's Leveled Creatures-Items), to get a more well-rounded gaming experience. I would also recommend installing CM Partners mod and TalkieToaster's Companion Share and Recruit mod to get some companions to help you in combat and in leveling up easily.

Ignore the above info for now, if you don't want even simple spoilers and want to discover all the things on your own (that is fun too, and that's how I finished the game on the first playthrough without any mods).

All the best.

So I've tried to play again several times and no luck. I went to skingrad to do the recommendation, and I get to the caves and get killed in literally one or two hits. Can someone just tell me an area to farm in or something, this is ridiculous.

Atronach can be a tricky birthsign for a new user. Likewise mages can also be a little tough since everyone and everything in the game are apparently marathon runners and can close any gap before you have a chance to get off more than a spell or two.

Another difficult part is that you get no Thief perks until you complete a couple quests for the thieves guild, and you have to do quite a few quests before you see any benefit of the mages guild, so joining them is fairly pointless since by the time you get the benefits, you have already figured out how to do without them.

Keep in mind that this is a bit different that many RPGs(especially MMOs)

-You need to get out of the way: you don't have a large health pool to absorb several fire spells in the face. You should do like you would in real life get out of the way!

-Crank the difficulty meter down: There's no shame in it. Game wise, you aren't meant to be any more powerful than anyone else. Spending 30seconds hacking away at an enemy only to have a second one come up and slaughter you is a pain, and likely the reason most weapon and armor mods boost the values beyond normal.

-Learn the controls: as stated earlier in the thread, mastering movement will keep you alive. learning how to dodge, duck dip dive and dodge will make the game a lot easier. My first playthrough I came out of the sewers, fell in the water and got killed by a slaughterfish because I couldn't see it. my second time I fell in the water, killed the slaughterfish and then promptly drown to death because I didn't know quite how to swim.

if you need to learn a bit about how game mechanics work try the UESP wiki. there are many good articles on each school of magic, race, birthsign as well as a general combat page that gives help on many spells and fighting techniques.

If all else fails, just grab this and have fun!

The first thing you need to learn is to run when outclassed. And at the beginning of the game, anything more powerful than a rat outclasses you. Even the goblins in the tutorial can be tough, and they are the weakest goblins you will meet.

If you enemy is equipped with a sword, try to find a place where they cannot hit you and shoot them full of arrows (carry a lot of arrows if you are going to try this) If they are an archer, close fast and use a sword or mace while using a shield to reduce the damage from arrows.

One trick, if the enemy keeps perusing you, run into a town where the guards will help out. After the guards kill them, loot the body. Always try to wear the best armor you can get - it may allow an extra hit or two.

Look at your class. If you are a mage, your weapons and armor skills are not going to be as high as if you are a knight.

Look at your race - is it compatible with your class? example, Bretons make good mages as they regenerate magica.

Look at your birthsign - does it complement your class and race?

At higher levels these are not going to be as important. But just starting off you need any advantage you can get.
