Unstriped
So, I've been having problems with my fps (15-25 in cities) and was thinking about upgrading my processor, since it seems to be the problem. My current processor is an Intel Core 2 duo (2,2 Ghz, 800 Mhz) and I was thinking of upgrading it to an Intel Core 2 Duo (2,8 GHz, 1066 Mhz). More info: http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=35563,37255, Would there be an significant fps-boost with a new cpu, or would it be a waste of money? Hickory
My processor is similar to your new one, and I would kill to get 25fps in (BC) cities. In short, 15-25 fps in cities in not a 'problem' when it comes to Oblivion. Sure, I can get better results with stock Oblivion, and no mods, but who plays like that? Even Stutter Remover caps fps to 30fps by default. That should tell you something. Oblivion is an old game, run on an old game engine that cannot handle the features of today's super computers, so even a top gaiming machine will choke on a heavily modded Oblivion. Striker879
Whether you make the upgrade or not, another thing to consider is tweaking your Oblivion install for maximum effectiveness. I recommend Koroush Ghazi's excellent tweaking guide (http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html). Don't neglect his recommendations for tweaking your entire machine and video card either. His recommendations tend to the conservative side and he's always clear on any known dangers ... as an aside, his work must be good, NVIDIA has called upon Koroush to produce tweaking guides for their new site (http://www.geforce.com/#/Optimize) ... the Fallout:New Vegas guide is his among others found there. My CPU is a bit quicker than your proposed upgrade (3.0 Core2 Duo), and I run SLIed 8800GTS 640Mb cards and I still don't get the type of fps you'd expect. Hickory is absolutely right, the Oblivion game engine can't take advantage of todays technologies. The important thing to remember is it's not a FPS. I've been playing since the original Wolfenstein/Quake/Doom days, I grew up on frames per second being king (and they are when you're playing a first person shooter, especially online multiplayer). Here in Oblivion what you're looking for is smooth scrolling when travelling or turning around. Most of the time when you get out your sword and start hacking you're not in some crowded city (well or I'm not anyway). Good luck on your upgrade.
