Ok I just got DAO the other day and I was wondering what are the differences between Oblivion\Fallout and Dragon Age when it comes to installing mods? Are they the same or what? I would really like to know so that I can really get down to modding my game. Also, I do not have the DLC. Just the game itself. So is completing the main quest going to hurt me? I have completed it before, but that was on the Xbox. Can I still continue exploring the world and advancing my character and completing side quests and mod added quests?

I'm sorry that I am being such a noob, but I have to learn some how. Thanks and kudos goes to anyone who can educate me on the workings of this game and better help me understand what I am getting into lol :)

Thanks again!

Welcome, Elsarian!

Not sure if it's all that "different", since I don't play Oblivion/FO.

But I think this article here on the Nexus Wiki will help you to get started: "Using DA Mods for Dummies".

Also, many, many of us who love the game recommend that you complete your first playthrough totally unmodded. (Or only with the "bug fix" types of mods, the best known are "Qwinn's Unofficial Fixpack", and "DA Core Rules Fixpack". I use both.)

The game is excellent out-of-the-box, and after playing it once you'll have a better idea of the kinds of mods you'd like to use, and a better appreciation of how they're enhancing your experience.

Then, you might look here for various perspectives and lists of the ones other people like: "Good Mods - Opinions".

Happy Gaming, you're in for a fantastic adventure!

Hi and welcome! :)

If you're ever going to install additional content, most of us here will highly recommend this program:

http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=277

DA:O ModManager makes installing custom content so much easier. ;)

As for doing sidequests - do them as quickly as you can, IMO. Reason being that a lot of sidequests will become uncompletable (is there such a word? ) at a certain point in the game.

Otherwise, Thandal speaketh truly. *sage nod*

Enjoy your gaming!

Hey Elsarian!

I hadn't read all of your post when I replied, so I didn't realize that you'd played through on the XBox already. Forget about doing your first time unmodded! No spoilers left.

But once you've finished the main storyline, you CANNOT go back and do side-quests. The only things you can do at that point are any of the DLC adventures that you haven't already completed. So: TSP, RtO, and WK, are the three additional pieces available. All of which are more fun/add more to the game overall (IMO) if you complete them as EARLY as possible in the regular game. (But that's just my view.)

Thanks to everyone here for replying to my post!! Kudos goes to everyone here! And a special thanks to you Thandal for all the helpful information that you have provided me!

Now I have one more question: How do you guys continue to play this game after you finish the main quest? Start a new game and just mod the hell out of it and not do the main quest at all? Or just play as a different character and see if you can achieve different out comes with the story?

In Oblivion, or TES IV: Oblivion, after the player completes the main quest, that person can continue to free roam where ever and whenever he\she chooses. So since I will not have that option here with DAO, would you recommend that I just start a new character (after completing the MQ) and devote that character to only completing mod added quest and discovering new side quests?

Thanks Everyone!! Also, Happy Valentines Day!

(Ummmm... did you read my reply directly above your most recent post?)

Yes, most of us do a new Class or a new Origin story at that point. I've finished at least eight complete playthroughs, and have several more partials with other characters.

Heyas Elsarian, welcome to the Dragon Age family :)

Well, one of the really big playstyle differences between oblivion/morrowind and DA is that you've still got choices on what parts of the adventure you want to take, in what order. But unlike with Oblivion/Morrowind, you do actually have to choose at least a part of the adventure, or else you won't be given the opportunities to take up the side-quests.

There isn't the free-roam element in DA like there is in Oblivion.

Basically put, you have to do the elements of the main quest, in order to get the side quests.

Also unfortunately, with this game, once you've finished the main quest, all the cities on the map are locked out, you can't travel to them anymore. The only ones left open are from DLC or mods :- /

Essentially what that leaves you with is the option to start up a new character. maybe try out a different race, and a different origin. Or play into some of the DLC material, or into the expansion Awakening.

And of course you can try out different choices than you made in your first game(s) and see how those affect the outcome at the end, or just try getting into a different type of role, for a different character. ;)

But yeah, unfortunately, once you kill the arch demon, the main story pretty much ends right there :(

Oh! And happy Valentine's Day to you as well! :)

Now I'm off to Redcliffe Village to do more Chantry Board stuff lol. Damn I need the gold! :)

Thanks again to everyone here!!

Not a problem at all :)

You'll find that one of the really great things about the DA forums here on the nexus is that we just looove to help each other out :) Just one more reason why I'm so pround of the good folks that we've got here

Ok, one thing that I might advise, while you're there in lothering, or really... any chantry for that matter.....

Some people get hit by a bug where the game crashes when you leave the chantry. Not really sure why, because not everybody gets it. But some do.

So I might advise creating a savegame right before you exit the doors, just in case ;)

Have fun, and hope that you come to love this game as much as the rest of us :)
