Jittery performance.

Every minute or two, the framerate will fall from an average of 59 to around 52 and the game will be a little jittery. It goes back to normal but only for another minute or two then repeats. This didn't happen on a vanilla install. The only mods I have installed are Skyrim Flora Overhaul, Skyrim HD - 2K Textures and FPS Counter.

Windows 7

16GB RAM

i7 Quad Core

GTX 980 Ti

This is a video the demonstrates the kind of stuttering I am dealing with. I deleted my Skyrim installation and started over. I left some old Skyrim preferences which are causing the animations and gameplay to be tied to the framerate, I know that is not normal but it better illustrates what I see. The only mods I reinstalled is SKSE and FPS Counter. I tried recording this many times with different software which didn't work until I tried using Shadowplay. In previous recordings, I've seen the framerate drop to 14.

This is a normal video with vanilla setting so gameolay is at a normal speed.

Thanks for the quick reply. My graphics setting are on ultra and are not too high. I am running a GTX 980 Ti. I can run The Witcher 3 on ultra. Ultra was Skyrim's recommended setting on first run and as I already said, this didn't happen before I installed any mods so they must be the problem. My new $2,500 computer should be able to handle a 4+ year old game just fine.

Did you mean the mods graphics settings? Do they have graphics settings? I still can't see how a GTX 980 Ti can't handle 2K textures.

It is skyrim, a todd howard game lol it will not work correctly ever without serious modding and 3rd party alteration. I posted here earlier about a similar problem to yours but I have an amd video card instead of nvidia. I spent more than two days on and off trying to solve the mystery stutter of skyrim even in default installations and only the unofficial patches in use with enb boost and skse only for memory management the stutter is still there. It happens when you look at an interior light source, it happens at random too. Some people call it the 64hz bug since older todd howard games have it too.

The trick to solving this is to change how you vsync skyrim. You can have vsync enabled in the launcher and your ini files but you need to be using that enb boost mod or if you are running an enb or plan to run an enb you need to have vsync DISABLED in your enb mod of choice. Then use 3rd party software to sync your game and it will run just fine. I think nvidia cards have some built in stuff to fix vsync problems like this like foricing vsync in nvidia control panel but for amd users we have to use something called radeonpro.

I am doing what I described above right now and there are no more random freezes or light source gawking freezes it just works now. I still get fps drops near certain areas exactly in the same spot every time so I know it is somthing else. For example that bridge near whiterun with the river flowing under it. You can get there with console type coc whiterun and press enter. You will be standing on the middle of that bridge just take a right like you are going to travel that way for a while and sure enough at the end of that bridge every single time, fps drop from 60 to about 45ish until you clear the end of the bridge and get up the hill just a bit where the wolf is waiting to attack you.

I was reading somewhere I think around here? that some parts of the game world between riverwood and whiterun cut through four or five different major exterior cells and by traveling through each of them so quickly you strain your computer to load all those cells and their contents in a short period of time.

So the main problem is not your computer it is todd howard and whatever the other devs were drinking all these years while they made these games.

Hello again D,

Yes, i was referring to your computers graphics settings, sorry for the confusion. I have been looking over the mods you downloaded and would like you to try the options i have included below.

Open skyrim.ini where your skyrim game is located in notepad and follow the below instructions if you haven't already. This is for skyrim flora overhaul:

This mod requires iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=7 in your skyrim.ini (put it below [grass] section) make sure you spell it exactly like that (use copy/paste), and yes it's supposed to be spelled "texure". SKyrim.ini is located in your /my documents/my games/skryim folder. You can use the start button and put in skyrim.ini the search field to find it quickly, open the file with Notepad to edit it.

Also for skyrim flora overhaul, make sure you followed the instruction below upon installing the aforementioned mod if you don't have the required dlc mentioned below:

Untick the optional SFO Dragonborn .esp if you don't have the Dragonborn DLC installed.

For skyrim hd - 2k textures:

System Requirements:

First of all: The loading times will increase depending on your system. Use your SSD if possible!

RAM - 4GB or more.

Graphics Card Memory - FULL: 1,25GB or more LITE: Almost the same as original Skyrim.

The LITE Version is also fluidly playable for Cards with <1GB VRAM. (Remember that the fps don't only depend on your card)

REMEMBER: If you install more mods than just mine, the requirements may vary.

TIP: Try combining FULL and LITE.

Sincerely,

Shay

I noticed people gaming on tv screens seem to have more problems than people using computer monitors.

You really have to work at this stuff, messing around in skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini then finding out if you need msi afterburner or rivatuner or if the nvidia control panel stuff will work instead and so on. Remember to disable the vsync in enb if you are using it and leave the vsync job to your nvidia control panel or some other 3rd party software. The enb vsync is very good and precise but it doesn't get along with skyrim and todd howard bad ideas about game engine design lol.

If you are running @1920x1080 your GPU should be able to handle those mods at those settings with no problem. What are you doing in game when you notice the "hiccups"?

Another thing you can try is to disable vsync in Skyrim, and use ENB to limit your FPS to 60 or less. While Vsync works fine for Skyrim if you use a 60hz refresh rate, it does not work very well if you use a higher one. (ie 120hz)

The only thing I am doing is wandering around outside. I had vsync on which kept me at an average 59 FPS but then disabled it to see if it made things better which it did not. My TV does not go above 60hz.

Hi

Skyrim is a directx 9 game. My old GTX 680 that was optimized for 9 gave me a smoother ride than the 970 I replaced it with. To get things running smooth again I tried using ENB & it worked. At the beginning of this year I bought a 4k monitor & started playing at 4k without ENB. Skyrim looks nice at 4k but the rough ride was back again. I now run Skyrim with a 980 at 1440 with ENB & the game runs smooth again.

I only assume that it is a directx 9 issue because that is the only test that my GTX 680 outperforms the 970 & 980.

I will be running tests using dragonslayer2k12 advise to try to get my game to run even smoother. You should do the same.

Later
