Windows 10, will you be upgrading this August

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to upgrade one of my systems as a "guinea pig" first, and then go from there for the other boxes depending on whatever that machine does (e.g. if there's a lot of compatibility problems on day 1, I'll wait for a while on the other systems). Overall I'm liking the idea of enabling DX12 and more Xbox integration though.

I want to know more about it first. Compatibility with programs, operation speed compared to 8.1, will it support my old soundcard Theadron DD(8 didn't find new drivers, found luckily working ones made by other company), and other small details.

Propably upgrading in time anyway. It has year time anyway. They keep updating it.

I will likely wait a few weeks then upgrade my non gaming laptop first. Then wait a while for the early adopters to find and fix the major bugs before doing my main game computer and the headless box I use for a server. I did upgrade to Win7 early, and have never regretted that decision. I hope the Win10 upgrade works as well as that one.

I won't be upgrading right away, but one thing has been bothering me... I should be able to claim a free update of Windows 10 since the copy of Windows 7 I'm using is less than a year old, however I haven't seen the notification about claiming the upgrade when I update Windows.

I have multiple Windows 7 machines, and only one of them pulled the "notification" (its called GWX.exe) - it's distributed via Windows Update, and seems to be hit and miss based on update settings/schedule as to if the machines get it. GWX.exe is not required for the Windows 10 upgrade, nor does your copy of Windows 7/8 have to be brand-new to be eligible. Personally I'd say chalk that one up as a W - it's kind of an annoying little applet (it pops up a notification every time the machine boots, and will continue to do that until Windows 10 is launched); I removed it from the machine that received it.

Not sure if it's worth going from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 10 Home. I'll probably stay on Win 7 as long as it's properly supported and compatible with new games and programms. Same as with my old Win 2000 system which I used until 2007 when I needed XP because some games I wanted to play wouldn't run on 2000 anymore.

Win7 Ultimate would not upgrade to Win10 Home, it would upgrade to Win10 Pro. There is no Ultimate edition for Win10. See here for more: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/windows-10-faq

The "no-cost" offer to upgrade from a legitimate Home version (not Enterprise) of Win7 (or Win8/8.1, including "Pro", but again, not Enterprise) to Win10 is good for one year from the release date of Win10. Any Win7/8 home machine should have received a small app via Windows Update that is used to analyze whether your hardware can support Win10 and then IF YOU CONSENT, "schedule" your machine for the update sometime after Jul 29.

If you don't allow Windows Update to install things automatically, you'd have had to install it manually before you'd see the offer.

Once it is installed, there'll be a Windows logo icon in your systray labeled "Get Windows 10".

[EDIT: Oh, and every game I've tested on my Win10 Preview rig has run fine, even if it isn't on MS's "verified for Win10" list.]

GOG is already preparing for Windows 10 so ye' good olde games will be safe (at least they are working on it):

Windows 10 has been running on my old HP Pavilion g6 laptop for about a month now and without any major issues (major issue = lockups, BSODs, etc), but I'll propably hold off upgrading until the teething issues are resolved.
