omiko
Bear with me, please… Whenever your PC “dies” in Oblivion, the game ends, you might say the world ends. You have to reload your previous saved game to continue, and all is well once again. Is there a way to access the PC, your character in the construction set, if there is I would like to access it and set my PC to “essential” or “respawn” or whatever the command is, not for the purposes of power, there are easier ways to do that. No, what I am interested in, is whether the game would continue with the PC “knocked unconscious.” In essence, does the game world continue with the PC inoperable, but alive. How would the Radiant AI deal with that? Can you see this as a metaphor for the real world? In the real world, nothing happens without an observer, and even more, the observer changes the event, at least that is what quantum physicists tell us. And that leads us to another question, if the game world ends when the PC “dies” or even becomes “unconscious,” is Bethesda mimicking this action, even unknowingly, because the real world is all the model there is to work with? Maybe this is too weird, but I am seriously curious what the AI would do… I really don’t expect any responses to this post, but I welcome them…

Jonlissla
Wow.... Dude, this is deep. Very, very, very deep. Reminds of a tricky question, that has something to do about this thread. (Well, came to think of it when I saw the name of the topic.) "I a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is there, does it make a sound?" I'm not quite sure what the AI would do, they would problably just continue their ever-day-life just as before. I don't think that Bethesda thought this deep... and I never thought I would do it either! ;D By the way, I don't believe there is any kind of PC character in the Construction Set, not what I've seen so far. If some serious modder reads this, maybe you can check it out?

(Well, came to think of it when I saw the name of the topic.) "I a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is there, does it make a sound?"It's ironic that you bring up that question, since the traditional Buddhist answer to such a question would be "無," which, in the ever-poignant tongue of the Chinese, means "that question is utterly ludicrous and you're incompetent for asking it ---" indicating a distinct lack of the "deep nature" that you so readily find in it. Povuholo
This mod delays the popping up of the load menu on the PC's death for 60 seconds. If any npcs near your body have the box 'can corpse check' checked, they could examine your corpse and say something like 'This body is fresh, there must be a killer around', or 'Rest in peace, my friend'. Would be nice when you are travelling with a companion. I saw in the CS that goblins have some kind of script that runs when the PC dies. Something with the disposition of the faction towards someone. So maybe they'll do something when you get killed by them?
Abramul
There is an NPC with the EditorID of "player".Race: ImperialName: Bendu Olo* *At least, I *think* that's the name.
omiko
thanks for the serious responses to a question that continues to bug me, as i see so many parallels between the oblivion world and the real world, questions of morality, and personality, of elapsed time-- oh, well, one weird question at a time. Abramul and Povoholu, thanks for the leads, i will surely follow up. Jonlissla, exactly, i would like to see if that is indeed the case, it would make for an interesting view, does Radiant AI need the PC to operate? i played a friend's game once, called "dungeon lords," a sandbox-type game like Morrowind and Oblivion. Being totally unfamiliar with it, my PC died within the first ten minutes, and i expected the file to close. Amazingly enough, the goblin-like creatures that did the deed kept right on talking, finally walked away, their grunts fading into silence and the PC body just lay there. Spooked me so much, i stopped playing. Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli were some of the quantum physicists that refined the observer + event proposition. http://www.vision.net.au/~apaterson/scienc...rver_effect.htm thanks again, people. In the Elder Scrolls History, Bendu Olo was the Colovian king of Cyrodiil in 1E/2200. And I forgot to add to my last message that it is indeed possible to (successfully) make the player essential. A mod was made doing it, but all you have to do is check the checkbox of Essential on the player npc.Abramul and Povoholu, thanks for the leads, i will surely follow up.Difficult name to spell eh? :P
Marxist ßastard
Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli were some of the quantum physicists that refined the observer + event proposition. http://www.vision.net.au/~apaterson/scienc...rver_effect.htmExcuse me, but I don't see that Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, or Wolfgang Pauli authored any part of that website whatsoever. I don't even see them quoted. The actual author's credentials appear, well, just slightly dubious: "Alex PATERSON is a former airline pilot, now living in Tasmania, Australia. He writes articles and advises on issues pertaining to... natural health therapies, esoteric teachings and spirituality." In fact, I doubt that he's had any formal education in quantum physics whatsoever. So let me restate my question: what reputable quantum physicist is the source for your assertion that "nothing happens without an observer, and even more, the observer changes the event"? Dark0ne
Oh god, now you've done it; you've got the Barstard to write more than a two lines in a thread. Woe to thee, traveller.
