When is it safe to go exploring?

I am a level 6 Dark Elf Thief.

I am not that far into the main quest (currently sent off to retrieve the bonebiter bow for the urshilaku dude). I like to go wandering off a lot and explore the world, but I am constantly running into monsters and npcs that tear me apart like I was nothing. Most of the dungeons I've explored have resulted in some big crazy guy killling me in one or two spells/hits.

What is a safe level to freely explore the world without having to worry about getting your ass kicked by everything out there?

Hmm really depends on the difficulty.

Most likely level 15 or so. If you're on easy (-100). 20 for normal (0). 35-ish for hard (100).

Also depends on your gameplay skill :P having got as far as the Urshilaku bit at level 6 I'd say you'd be safe to wander around at about level 10 or more

Not sure if my armor right now is any good, since I'm pretty new to the game and havent much to compare it too.

I am wearing Glass curaiss, greaves, and boots. And the rest of my gear is Chitin.

I constantly switch between weapons, using mainly: Dewimer Jinksword (sp??), Fireblade, Firebite Dagger, Cruel Flameblade, and some others I cant think of right now.

Being a thief, my sneak skill is very high (around 75 right now at lvl 6). There's a few monsters that I cant kill in close quarters melee combat, but if I sneak near them I can kill them with a single arrow. Should I be focusing more on melee combat? Being so powerful with the bow has made me avoid melee fights lately. Am I playing a thief correctly?

Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, and I'm playing this game all wrong.....

By level 6, you ought to be more than able to go wandering around. The fact that you've made it to the Urshilaku camp is indicative of this. If I were you, I'd just take the trip from Balmora to Seyda Neen a few times and get accustomed to the wilderness. There are some decent tombs and whatnot around that will help.

Also, go to Balmora and do Larrius Varro's quest. You'll pick up a good weapon.

Yeah, it is alot wto do with gameplay skill, my most resant Char. was level 1, no armor, and a shock great sword, I clear the whole dwemer ruin near Balmora, then formt hat got better stuff and so on. so at a few risks, carry alot of Helaht potions an dyour get stong fast.

yeh, basically what the others said.

theres no real right or wrong way to play a morrowind character.

exploring is great but you should have a few things, heres what i carry, you may have to adjust for wieght differences etc.

10 health potions

3 restore fatigue

1 cure blight

2 cure common disease

1 cure parlization(spell)

2 scroll of almsivi

some scrolls of divine intervention may be good also.

you should have no problems, especailly since ur at the urshilkau(spell <_< ) quest.

just basically get used to being in the wild, use a bow for long range, short sword or dagger for short range, what works-works.

hoped that helped

happy thieiving

If you need a little experience, I'd recoment the Grazelands. I took my recent character there at around lvl 6 and by the time I was done he was about lvl 10 or so. And if you are as good at sneaking as you say and have good marksman, it should be no problem. Besides, there are many shalks, from my experience at least, along the mountains on the Western border of the Grazelands and combined with Racer Pinions you could hold your own finacially for a while. But, compared to most others here I think that I'm fairly new, having only owned the game less than a year now, so I'd take their advice over mine but at least it there.

The only way you can play Morrowind 'all wrong' IMO is to go blundering around on your own killing who/whatever you come across, and then want to do the scripted quests later.

If killing is what turns you on, there's nothing wrong with that approach but if you intend to do any game quests you do you run the risk of screwing up big time.

The good thing is that you can start two games and do both.

Go and get the amulet of shadows by following the road north out of Gnisis. Do Master Aryon's quest out of Tel Vos (need two rising force potions) which will give you an amulet of levitating. With these available even to low level characters you are very well placed to take on some quite nasty foes.

You could try some of the faction quests as they get you out and about a bit, but are nicley graded so they aren't to hard at low levels. From the sounds of it you will find wandering the wilderness with what you have and at your level, except you may want to aviod going inside the gostfence for a while.
