Troubleshooting missing textures...

I have a pretty good set of mods mostly working, having one particular problem: Brotherhood of Steel NPC's often showing up with missing textures, seemingly for face / head and hands. I *think* it is mostly / all female BOS with the missing textures. This seems to be the only issue beyond a few glitches with corpses and EVE effects (once or twice, have had a body flipping about and floating around.)

 

Their head and hands show up as the dreaded red ! of doom:

You are having a problem with meshes, not textures. My guess would be the T6M Female Power Armor Replace +DLC +FWE.esp since it should be loading after all the other FWE plugins.

 

Or it could be that you just have too many files and the game cannot render everything.

 

Also, use only one Optional Restore Tracers, not both.

 

With the Blackened patch, you should not have any MMM plugins activated except for the DC Interiors patch. And the .esp should not be in the Data folder.

 

Did you just install the game and load up with a bunch of mods or did you add them in one at a time, checking in the game to see that they and the game function properly?

Mostly added them in categories, testing after major changes.

 

Started with Unofficial Patch, DarnUI, tested. Then texture packs, tested. Then overhauls, had first tried wtih FOIP as that was what I was familiar with, then started over, read up on blackened (and apparently missed something there...)

 

After overhauls were tested in-play (played through Vault 101 up to megaton and first fights) I then started on things like locations and armor mods and such.

 

Did the whole FO3MasterUpdate / MasterRestore thing each time, did all my mods using NMM, even re-packed those that had their folder structure wrong.

 

Really thought I had everything more-or-less right.

I had tried removing the T6M mods (T6M Equip Replacer and the Female Armor Replacer) but that just made it worse lol.

 

Going through that now, it looks like the archive is another you can't just do with NMM and go. Must have missed these mods in the repacking process.

This right here is the most likely reason why you're getting red exclamation marks. For 2 reasons:

  1. Your Blackened patch relies on Project Beauty.esm as master, not "Project Beauty HD Version.esm". Where did you get this plugin anyway? Are you using a really ancient version of Project Beauty? With the latest version of Project Beauty, both the standard and HD version of Project Beauty's master file are named the same.
  2. When using said Blackened patch alongside Project Beauty, you need to be using the HD version of Project Beauty. (and I'm not talking about some antiquated version of PB, where the master file is named as such). Just download the latest version of Project Beauty, unpack the download, find the included folder that says "HD version" and copy it's contents into your FO3/data folder.

 

Did the whole FO3MasterUpdate / MasterRestore thing each time

Mod guides I read all talked about doing so; should I undo that? Run MasterRestore and just use a merge patch via FO3Edit?

 

So far as Project Beauty, I downloaded the latest "Fallout 3 Redesigned" that is linked from top mods list.

However, the first responder nailed it. I repacked the T6M Equipment replacer and that fixed the red stuff.

 

Ran into a funny issue today, Sydney is carrying her weapon upside down - and I am not using the reanimated mod or whatever, so maybe a mod I have relies on that? Not a major issue.

I also keep having lag / lockups when using Crow (in particular) if not all the outdoor vendors (have not fully tested.)

 

Have the occasional crash, but usually can play for hours without issue.

 

Oh, and blackened did mention it only works with the HD version of Project Beauty; I don't get any errors in either BOSS or FO3Edit reporting the missing .ESM - no idea if that makes things "OK" but figured I would mention it?

The latest version of project Beauty doesn't comes with a .esm that's called Project Beauty HD Version.esm. You can check it yourself. Both the standard and the HD version of the mod have a master file that's called "Project Beauty.esm".

So I don't know where you got that "Project Beauty HD Version.esm" master file, but it's not from the latest version of PB.

 

Oh, and blackened did mention it only works with the HD version of Project Beauty; I don't get any errors in either BOSS or FO3Edit reporting the missing .ESM - no idea if that makes things "OK" but figured I would mention it?

 

I know better then anyone else that Blackened only works with the HD version of Project Beauty. I made those patches. And as its main author I know the Blackened patches have "Project Beauty.esm" as master.

Just remove "Project Beauty HD Version.esm" from your load order and enable Project Beauty.esm. That's all.

 

Reason why you don't get any errors in Fo3Edit is because Project Beauty.esm is present in your load order. Fo3Edit will load it automatically. Same goes for BOSS.

Must be really old mod guides then. Fo3Edit's masterUpdate function was used for resolving something related to an older version of Fallout 3. Something that was fixed with the official 1.7 update of Fallout 3. Don't know how long ago that update was released but it must be at least 5 years ago.

Not trying to argue and much appreciate the help. Did not know you were the guy that did blackened; does not change that I really thought I had the right .esm enabled.

The "Project Beauty HD Version.esm" is contained in the "Non-Lore Clover Fix" download of Fallout 3 Redesigned. I believe (but could be wrong) that it was BOSS that gave me advisory to run one or the other, not both, IIRC.

 

Now that I look again, I cannot find any mention of / instructions regarding that file on the page for the FO3 Redesigned mod. Going to try enabling both? Not sure.

 

And again; should I undo the masterupdate deal? Or does it just not matter a bit? I know it locks my mod order down when udpated, and I restore to unlock it. /shrug
