Dialogue Won't Work

Greetings everyone! This is probably one of the only times I'll ask for help, since it's not often I face problems... and it's not often lately that college permits time for modding :/

Moving on to matters... I'll be very brief and up to the point: I have been trying to implement a DIALOGUE for a custom NPC, based on two tutorials, as well as my past, successful dialogue made in Fallout 3:

I learned quite a bit about dialogus, yet they won't work. The problem is this: I implemented my dialogue, linked all of the different topics to each other, set the conditions, including the GetIsID to check for the correct NPC. I tried sticking to a customized dialogue used only by this NPC to prevent any problems. Yet, when I test it in game, it does NOT work at all: I walk up to the NPC, click enter on him, and NOTHING. I have been trying everything I possibly could do, but nothing works. I am about to start pulling my pubes out and light them on fire!

I would appreciate it if anyone knows what the problem is, or if someone could point me in the right direction:

Attached are my Test.esp file and the Big_Bob.txt dialogue I wrote, packed into a .rar file

PS: The NPC "VTopsBob" could be found in the TOPSRestaurant Cell.

EDIT:

Additional info:

- I did tick the "Start Game Enabled" box

- Tried setting Priority to 50 (I tried increasing/decreasing it, to no effect)

What exactly is happening? Make sure the NPC has "allow PC dialogue" checked, and if the topics aren't showing make sure the topics have "Top-Level" enabled.

I mean, can you go into the dialogue menu and no topics are showing up? If so you don't have any top level topics ^^

If you can't even enter into dialogue menu/topic menu, that clicking does nothing, except maybe prompt a regular dialogue sentence something like "I can't talk to you right now" then it's the allow PC dialogue check

I am pretty sure the Top-Level thing is not an issue, but... it is the second problem, the NPC does basically say "I can't talk to you right now" without entering dialogue.

So what is this "Allow PC Dialogue" option you're speaking of? I could not find it anywhere within the GECK, and upon further research, I read that in Fallout all NPCs are by default. If I am mistaken, I would appreciate it if you could help me locate that option.

Thanks for the help so far!

I've only encountered this issue working with robots, which are creatures. But if you edit the NPC itself, it should be on the page where you have the options to make it essential, allow low-level processing, etc.

BUT I don't have the Geck handy and I'm not sure if the option is available for non-creatures.

Indeed, this option doesn't exist for non-creatures, I just checked it out. I wonder if this is just one of those glitches that happens only to me, since I tend to have such problems lol.

In my experience, every problem has a solution (well most) and it's always something overlooked.

IE, I had the same problem and it was because my quest wasn't start game enabled. :wallbash:

Do you have any stages in your quest? Maybe try adding just a '0' stage. It's worth a shot. Otherwise make sure the dialogue conditions are okay. Try making a topic that just has GetIsID == NPC condition (== to 1 )! and see if that works. If it does its probably a condition problem.

That didn't change anything, unfortunately :/

FORTUNATELY, though, it was indeed a quite stupid glitch... I restarted the game and created a new character. Then I did COC <location> where the NPC was, tried talking, and... voilah. Everything worked.

It looks like the game, for some weird reason, just hated me for implementing an NPC into a zone I had already visited. This will not be a problem for me in the future, but might be for people downloading the mod.

Does anyone know this issue and whether it could somehow be worked-around?

Thanks, and thanks for Your advice, PaladinRider!

  • 6 years later...

I tried what you did, but it didn't work. I made a Super Mutant companion for Fallout 3, gave him dialogue, gave him a custom voice, put him in Springvale, made a new character, did the command "COC Springvale" and tried to activate him, but nothing happened. When I Press the E key to talk to him, nothing happens, he doesn't even talk to me, or stop to look in my general direction. It also makes that click sound when you go to press the E key and nothing is highlighted. I have made sure that the quest has Start Game Enabled, but I have no stages in the quest because he is supposed to be a follower character only. I don't know what's happening, can someone please help me? (Do keep in mind that I did no voice acting, I just made a custom voice for him, but I don't see how that can conflict with being able to talk to him in-game.)
