Random CTD's and Texture Bugs

Alright well to start this is my first time playing Fallout 3 again since it was first released. Honestly I never even bothered beating it because of how sluggish it was and such, but I was playing New Vegas through again modded and looked into some Fallout 3 mods. Never-the-less I've downloaded several mods and got the game running and it simply looks amazing. To my knowledge I'm having 3 main issues right now.

1. The game randomly crashes to desktop on me, I can play fine for 5-10 minutes it seems then it just crashes. Nothing in particular seems to trigger it that I know of, it's happened leaving Megaton, once randomly running through the wilds, and once in vault 101.

2. I'm getting a texture bug with npc's armor and my dog thing. I've looked into it a bit and apparently it's because of the FOOK mod I used. I used the installer to add it to my game then added all of the optional download parts correctly so I'm not sure why it is doing it. Mainly it's happening to Malcom, the guy I get in Megaton. But I've also seen it on the brahmin in megaton, the dog that joins me, some creatures outside, some caravan guards, and a gun I picked up.

3. I've got that mod with 100 different radio songs downloaded, the esp is in the right place and all of the songs are in the proper folder yet when I run the radio station in game I get mostly static, I can barely hear the music at all. Is that how it was meant to be, because it's quite annoying.

Well now that I've said what the issues are I'll go ahead and list the mods I've put into the game...

1. Fallout Mod Manager

2. Marts Mutant Mod

3. Fellout

4. Weapon Mod Kit

5. GNR - More Where That Came From (That's the radio one)

6. FWE - FO3 Wanderers Edition

7. ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated (This I placed in the game's main folder and try to run it and it says it can't find my Fallout 3 folder. Then when I go to browse and locate it manually it says that isn't my Fallout 3 folder, kind of annoying.)

8. Fallout 3 Re-Animated

9. Fallout 3 Project Beauty HD

10. EVE - Energy Visuals Enhanced

11. FOOK2 RC v1.1 Beta 2

12. NMCs_Texture_Pack_For_FO3 (The reason I even considered coming back, absolute kudos to this modder the game looks amazing with his textures.)

13. Enhanced Weather - Rain and Snow

I know that is a lot of mods to have added, but I couldn't help myself. The game looks too good as it is now and so far has played great minus those 3 hiccups there. The texture thing is a minor detail, it'd be nice to fix but I could live with it if need be. The radio, same deal. However I'm mainly concerned with crashing every 5-10 minutes. My initial thought on the idea was it was just too much stuff for my computer to handle and it's crashing out on me, however I'm getting max fps while playing even on ultra settings with all of this so I don't know. My pc's specs are...

Processor : AMD Phenom II 1090T 3.2GHz x6

Ram : 6 gb

Video : GeForce 450 GTS

O.S : Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

My main thing are the graphics mods, if possible I'd like to get all of those running for a solid playthough. The gameplay mods were just to add some additional spice to the game to make it more interesting this time around, and I must say running into a radroach the size of my player when leaving vault 101 suprised me. I was scared to even go near it with my lead pipe and I was out of ammo lol.

Without FOSE installed and running you should not be able to play the game at all. But I suspect you actually have FOSE and just forgot. Anyway, this sounds like the kind of thing that a proper load order and a bashed patch might fix. One other thing might be involved, but I'll get into that next.

This sounds like a problem with the cosmetic changes conflicting from one overhaul mod to another. Load order can cause this, but it might also be related to the fact that you are simultaneously running five major overhaul mods covered under the FOIP (Fallout Interoperability Project) without running FOIP itself.

3. I've got that mod with 100 different radio songs downloaded, the esp is in the right place and all of the songs are in the proper folder yet when I run the radio station in game I get mostly static, I can barely hear the music at all. Is that how it was meant to be, because it's quite annoying.

There is a story line quest in which this will be resolved. To avoid a spoiler I will merely say that at the moment you are not close enough to the primary broadcasting tower to pick up the station.

Well now that I've said what the issues are I'll go ahead and list the mods I've put into the game...(snip)

Your load order would be much more helpful. The best way to show us would be to load up FOMM, export your load order to a text file, and then copy and paste the contents of that file to this thread.

7. ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated (This I placed in the game's main folder and try to run it and it says it can't find my Fallout 3 folder. Then when I go to browse and locate it manually it says that isn't my Fallout 3 folder, kind of annoying.)

I recommend not using this, preferring FOMM's archive invalidation method. But if you prefer this mod, then you must disable the "Archive Invalidation" option in FOMM's Tools menu - you don't wanna use both methods at the same time. As for the folder, there are two Fallout 3 folders: the game installation folder and the documents folder. The former is the one you are after, but that error may indicate a problem with the UAC in Windows Vista or Windows 7. If it is still acting like this installation failed, then I would UNinstall the bloomin' thing and use FOMM's option instead (actually I would do that anyway, cuz FOMM is less likely to screw things up).

Good luck!

Currently I've disabled FOOK2 and FO3 Wastelands gameplay mods and I haven't had any problems at all yet.

As for that one mod you mentioned, yes I do have it I just forgot to mention it as you guessed. If I don't need that invalidator mod because the mod manager has one built in then I'll just get rid of it. I just recalled one of the mods saying I needed to have it. As for the load order I just hit the button that let it arrange the order automatically and played it that way. If it's possible to get it running well with those other two mods I'm all ears, but if not I can deal with how I have the game now.

Thanks for the response by the way.

You definitely NEED to get and install the FOIP mod files for EVE, MMM and WMK - this is a must. You also need to pick just ONE of the GNR files (the one that matches the number of extra tracks you installed) and deactivate all the others, they are differing versions of the same thing. And when you have dealt with those two rather large problems, you then need to make a merged patch. I'd recommend using WryeFlash to make a bashed patch, but if that is more trouble than you're looking for then get FO3edit - it is simple but less effective.

I have no idea what you just said lol... sorry to ask but would it be too much trouble to post the links and tell me what I need to do with those files? My modding experience with Fallout 3 thus far has only been to download the file and copy them into the data folder. Nothing like merging patches and what-not.

Ok I got all of the files from FOIP and FO3 Edit. Now what?

Edit : With those files placed into the data folder this is what my mod selection looks like with everything highlighted. What doesn't need to be checked?

Install FOIP with VERY careful attention to the directions in its readme file. When that is complete, then its time for FO3edit. Here are the steps for that:

1. Run FOMM and make sure that the above issues have been dealt, that everything is active that should be, and that nothing is active that should NOT be. Now run FOMM's auto sorter routine. When that is done exit FOMM.

2. Install FO3edit according to its instructions (it is just a matter of copying two files into your Fallout installation folder).

3. Run FO3edit. It will popup a listing of all your currently active mods - just click "OK" without making any changes.

4. Wait patiently as it loads in all those mod files. You will know it is done when the bottom status bar says "Background loader: finished"

5. In the LEFT hand panel, find an empty space and RIGHT click to bring up a popup menu. Select "Created merged patch". It will prompt you for a name, use something generic like "mergedpatch", or somesuch. It will then create an .esp file with that name, and it SHOULD activate at the bottom of your load order.

6. Exit FO3edit and run FOMM once more. Verify that the merged patch you created is indeed activated and is DEAD LAST in your load order. If so, launch FOSE and test it out. Then let us know how it went. Good luck!

Edit: you ninja'ed me there. You have some doubling up going on there. Look back at that load order you posted and some of it should be obvious, e.g. VATS halftime and VATS realtime obviously cannot be going at the same time, since VATS cannot simultaneously run at both half speed and at full speed. Also, if you read the readme file for the FOIP files for MMM-FWE, it tells you that you must DEactivate the individual esp files for Natural Selection, Tougher Traders and Zones Respawn. I strongly suggest you revisit those readme files once more.

I got to step 5, it doesn't let me right click in the left side box. Well I can, but nothing comes up.

Edit 10 : Well game loaded up, but it still ctd about 5 minutes in.

Edit 11 : Not to mention malcom's armor is still glitching texture wise, as is the bramin in Megaton, and a few other creatures/people as I was running around.

Edit 12 : Well the game seems to be running fine, but there are more and more texture issues with weapons and such. I suspect its something to do with the FOOK mod.

Edit 13 : Redownloading FO3 Wanderer and going to overwrite the files to see if that fixes things as I just did FOOK's reinstall. If it doesn't then I'm out of ideas.

EVE is integrated in FOOK2 1.1 Beta 2. You have not installed FOOK2 1.1 Beta 2 correctly since you still have FOOK2 1.0 RC plugins in your load order. FWE or FOOK2, pick one. Use only one of the GNR plugins. WMK with the DLC plugins requires a merged patch. You are running MMM 6.x with the MMM 5.x/FOOK2 compatibility patches.

I recalled reading somewhere that FOOK2 and FWE were capable of being played together. So I guess the choice for me is do I want the gameplay difference of FWE or the item difference of FOOK2.

Also, according to what you said about EVE and FOOK2. I don't need to have EVE selected on my list? And is there a compatibility patch for MMM 6.x?

This is the new load setup, I've removed FO3 Wanderer stuff as well as the Beauty thing since for FOOK2 has it built in.

Edit : I downgraded to the MMM 5 so the compatibility thing would work and the graphics are STILL messed up. Sigh.
