Best combat mods to go with sperg? And, anything essential over the past year?

Hi all,

 

I stopped playing about a year ago, fed up with the noise from my R9 290 & low fps. I've now got a 980ti on the way so am going to start up with modded Skyrim again - if I don't get solid fps now, then it will definitetly be the way I'm installing the mods, rather than gpu shortcomings.

 

So, first, I played enough before to feel that vanilla was rather easy, especially with followers.

 

I was thinking of using skyre, but have gone off that idea, think sperg plus some combats may be easier to install/update.

 

Can anyone recommend combats mods to go with Sperg? I noticed too a competitor to sperg has just come out, how does that compare?

 

Finally, over the past year, what mods are really so good as to be sort of essential?
