Bethesda: Oblivion "sacrificed what made Morrowind special"

I don't know if this has been posted, I had a quick look and saw nothing.

Speaking to OXM in a hot-off-the-press, detail-saturated interview, Bethesda's Todd Howard has confessed that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion "sacrificed" the feel of preceding title Morrowind in the interests of a "refined and welcoming" gameworld........

I really hope he's not making things up again, if not then Skyrim is sounding better all the time.

I just don't get it... I started playing Morrowind when it first came out and then did for years, When they announced Oblivion I didn't care and didn't even get it will maybe 2007 or something because I was still playing Morrowind, thus avoiding all the hype. Both games felt just as special, but people seem to have built this big thing in their heads that they thought Oblivion should have been and instead of enjoying it for what it was they wanted Morrowind 2. I loved Morrowind but don't see it as this perfect entity that people seem to worship... case in point 1 hour into the game a noob can get a full set of glass armor by killing the right people and steal the Daedric bow hanging on the wall by hiding around the corner...

The only valid point I can see is the game being more tailored for console (sorry for using that dirty word  )... unfortunately it looks like Skyrim will be even more so.

Morrowind has better features as an open rpg than oblivion for me. That's the main point. Skyrim seems to make real improvements in this area and this interview comfort me into thinking that I'll love that game.

So thanks for sharing even if I think it has already been posted since it's been released on the internet for a few days.

I'm hoping too, but let's not forget Ken Levine making big promises before Bioshock was launched and how the game actually turned out. :ermm:

These days, winning a GOTY award in gaming media is hardly a guarantee for any actual quality in the game itself.

Not saying that Bioshock was bad though, it was just a more shallow and simplified game compared to what was promised and hinted at.

Thanks for the news post.

Skyrim is at present my last hope. Having played DA2 I now think that BioWare has gone the way of the Hershy bar for me... Even though I thought KOTOR was one of the greatest games ever, I see a recurring trend in their games of tunneling and forcing the player to do stuff at a certain time (or miss it) which takes away from the immersion in the world. Especially when they use the same dungeon a few times, but even worse, use the same entrances for different dungeons later on in the game.... buh?

Anyway... I like both companies but I do believe Bethesda gets the cookie for keeping the open sandbox RPG alive...

The interview was about exploring an alien culture/world in Morrowind vs a familiar one in Oblivion. That's not why Morrowind was better. It was the static world and the fact that things could actually kill you if you wandered into the wrong area, as opposed to everything levelling up with you and inundating the world with the rarest items.

I was just about to post about the OXM article on Todd talking about there being geography similar to the Shivering Isles, but I guess someone beat me to the chase.

I hope that's not an empty promise, I loved the Shivering Isles all the way.
