Odd graphics problem

Recommended Posts

I've encountered a strange graphical problem which seems to appear/disappear at no particular time/occasion. Every so often, all red colour disappears from my display. If I can recall correctly, prior to this fault occurring I had been afk and the screensaver (default Windows) had been on for a while. Other colours display fine. Rebooting does not fix this problem.

On previous occasions, the problem disappeared and the display was back to normal as inexplicably as it had appeared. It does not seem to be related to how long the computer has been switched on. Connecting up a different monitor showed the same red-deficient display. Opening the case and reseating the graphics card did result to a display lacking in red, but after about 30 seconds red colours suddenly appeared again.

My graphics card is fairly new - under 7 months old, and it's an NVidia Geforce 7600GS PCI-E (passively cooled). Latest drivers are installed (though I don't think this is a software problem). GPU core temperature is indicated as 65 degrees C - well below the threshold of 125 degrees C.

Could there be an intermittent fault in the card itself? An interference from the screensaver? Whatever it is, spontaneously losing all red colour from the display is really rather annoying, and if anyone can help me diagnose what's wrong (or even better, tell me how to fix it) I would appreciate it!

Have you looked at the connection where your monitor plugs in to see if there's anything unusual like a bent pin, or something else physical that might change with temperature. You said that the color came back after some time, might want to pay closer attention to the point where it comes back and see if it is consistant. This could also indicate something not so obvious like a bad weld. You may just want to RMA it if it's still covered under warrenty, and take your chances with the replacement card. It does sound like a bad or falty connection somewhere though, could even be your monitor cable.

Although it sounds silly, you might also want to see if red stops displaying when your computer is turned off. The problem could be biological, and something to look into.
