Fallout 3 on Windows 7 64bit

So I bought and downloaded FO3 off of Steam today and I'm trying to figure out how to get it to run properly. I'm using Windows 7 64bit. I know my computer meets all the requirements for it and all that (except for my software). I know it's not 'officially' compatible with Windows 7 and was intended for use on Windows XP/Vista. But I'm reading all over the place that people have got it to work on 7. The game starts up fine until I try to start a new game. It goes through the loading process and quits and gives me a message saying "Fallout 3 has stopped working. There's a problem blah blah Windows will notify you if we find a solution to the problem blah blah blah". I've tried running it as an admin and setting the compatibility mode to both Windows XP (SP2 and 3) and Vista (SP 1 and 2). Still doesn't work. I've even tried removing the intro cinematic to see if it did anything. So has anyone come up with or stumbled across a any sort of definite solution? Or at least something that would help?

Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands (including me) are playing FO3 on Win7 x64 with no problems at all. With no mods it should be a download and go operation. NO compatibility mode required.

The reason Bethsoft doesn't support Win7 (or Vista) is they used XP to make the game and do not want to take the time to test their games in other operating systems. They work fine though.

First recommendation, if you are going to be playing with mods - get it out of the UAC controlled default location. With steam, you must move your steam to the new location - and steam even tells you how to do it.

i've got the same problem than you do until i found on a forum, someone that say that to make fallout 3 working on an intel laptop (i have Windows 7), you need to download d3d9.dll and put it on fallout 3's directory, and erase you're savegames's folder located in my docs/my games/ fallout 3, run the game, let it detect you're system and after i've done this, it worked perfectly, i don't know if you can make it work with that methods, but try it, it cost nothing to try.

I had the same problem, tried what you said, and it gave me some nonsense about DDRAW.dll.

Could you provide more information?

Ah, yes. That nonsense. It's a problem with your DirectX.

Have a look over here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/ddraw-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm

Other then that, FO3 works just fine on Win 7 x64.

Hope it helps.
