WursWaldo: You don't know jack except what you've read on various sites and forums, that hardly makes you an expert. :P

Everything will be reverse engineered in time, and some faster than others. There are fantastically talented people who've been doing this for years, have some faith.

Yes. Nexus is not my only source of information. I see this insular response here a lot. But you're absolutely right, I shouldn't be looking at other websites or other sources of information. I should only believe what I see on Nexus.

Has anyone tried just changing .ba2 to .bsa and see if BSAOpt will open it? Has there been screenshot of it opened in a hex editor? What's the source of the screenshot of the list of archives? Is that source reliable? That's a good question I don't see being answered is the source reliable because FO4 has had plenty of hoaxes over the years and this would be perfect for trolling people and scaremongering.

I can read and write Cyrillic (I am Sudanese Christian) but I cannot speak Russian. What I have seen on *mods.net.

BA2 is not STEAM encryption meant to stop people from opening BSA before launch date. It is a new format or an alien one. The program to open it does not exist.

The game isn't out yet, the people playing are presumably on advance copies and/or pirated versions of that. The only thing I've seen so far is a screenshot of files from the Steam preload, but those files are encrypted until the game is released.

edit: apparently legal in Germany.

I don't think anyone thinks that .ba2 format is the result of Valve's compression? It doesn't change filenames, just the encrypts the contents as with any previous steam preload. It's just that most people don't have access to the real deal just yet.

From what I have read the Russians (who know these things) cannot decipher the encryption. They are saying they have never seen it before. It is not a known Valve or STEAM code to keep people from viewing the contents. This is what I get from their on line conversations.

Edit: I cannot link the site here. What they discuss is against the Nexus rules.

You have no idea who I am on SmithMicro, Renderosity, daz3d, or anywhere else. All you see is a Nexus downloading account with 70 posts. I 'mod' but not for free and not for games.

Now that's interesting. I presume they're not looking at steam preload files then. Just might have to hunt around a bit, I'm curious now.

I guess you already knew some of the truth.

To you others,

Yes, I am making all of this up as I go.

What I think BA2 is: It is a 64bit version of a 32bit bsa. When the old games scanned a bsa for a particular file there was pointer like in PK files. This in inefficient for larger files so the old games had the bsa broken into smaller file sizes. Now there is a new system with a more effective means of pointing to a file inside an archive and the archives are bigger. This requires 64bit and probably why Bethesda sets the mobo memory to 8gig minimum. Knowing Bethesda the game is poorly optimized and needs a 64bit OS and the excess memory to run properly.

This also benefits Microsoft since the few people who still use XP and Vista will be forced to update to a modern OS. This will also help with compatibility for Xbox1 console mods. One less thing for Bethesda and Microsoft to worry about.

If (notice that I said IF) BA2 is the new archive format no one can open it unless they have the proper software. Effectively it is a DRM and circumventing it means cracking the game. That makes you a pirate who violates the license of the Bethesda game software. This is an effective means of controlling modding since there is no access to the archives unless you use Bethesda made or approved software. This is actually a very smart business move if Bethesda intends to monetize mods for console. Daz/Poser does something similar by controlling the runtimes with their software. The difference is Daz/Poser is honest with their intent, whereas Bethesda intends to blindside an unsuspecting modding community.
