Fraps is an extreme cpu hog, I couldn't play games smoothly with. but its recording uncompressed video thats why. Okay I might be a slight bit off topic since I don't know about replacement software but I use different methods to record. Although the software virtualdub have a filter that can blur it out with a box of gray, but probably not what you want. Fraps might be the only software.

A better way would be to use a tv tuner. Especially if its an external box than it will releave a lot of cpu power. I have a msi tv@anywhere bought at newegg for $30, usually cheap tv tuner is really bad with image, but this one is really acceptable and even has a remote. I connect the svideo out of my video card to it, set the video card to display dual clone, and use the software Dscaler4 to record the desktop. Set the software to convert directly to DivX. This is the key since you can set how many bitrates its converting at a moment, the lower, the faster and smoother the recording. Or you can use Virtualdub, another good software, both freewares.

The best way would be to use an external device to record. I have an Archos 640 Wifi which is a portable video player (and wireless internet), it can record video up to 1024x768 and to 640x368. But it require a dock to record, comes up to over $450 total, but is very convience as multipurpose for me. There is a cheaper version, 404. I uploaded some videos recorded by it to youtube, see my sig, but you know how youtube lower the video quality.

If you have a home dvd recorder player that works too.
